    A Look Inside the New Simulation Hospital at Pittbsurg State University

    A short tour video that was published on YouTube. The roughly $8 million, 10,000-square foot simulation hospital is being built by McCownGordon and funded by private gifts initiated by donors who saw the need. Simulation hospital rooms, associated control and preparation rooms, debriefing rooms, a waiting area, and study spaces outfitted with state-of-the-art simulation equipment will enrich student learning and allow them to take that valuable experience to clinical sites and places of employment after graduation. It’s planned for substantial completion this spring/summer and full occupancy ahead of the fall semester. The project also includes targeted renovations of approximately 14,000 square feet in the existing building (McPherson Hall). It will accommodate cohorts of 120 students; currently, there are 90.     Structure Elucidation of Castor Oil Based Self-Condensed Polyols and Applications in Flexible Foams and Elastomers

    Self-transesterification of castor oil was employed to prepare higher molar mass polyols possessing interesting properties that can be used without purification. The resulting structure of the polyols is complex due to the reversible nature of transesterification reaction, allowing formation and destruction of new polyols simultaneously. Detailed structures of the prepared polyols were studied using spectrometric analysis including MALDI-TOF, that enables identification of the anticipated structures, supporting the proposed mechanism. In addition, polyurethane elastomers were prepared from these polyols, and yielded soft materials with low Shore A hardness. These polyols were also tested in molded polyurethane foams and their polyurethane properties were compared with those of commercial bio-polyols

    EVALUATION OF PROMISING ECO-FRIENDLY FLAME RETARDANTS FOR BIO-BASED RIGID POLYURETHANE FOAMS BASED ON MODIFIED CASTOR OIL

    Fossil fuel derivatives in the polyurethane industry are gradually being replaced with environmentally friendly alternative bio-based resources. Vegetable-oil-based polyols are emerging bio-based resources that can decrease cost competitiveness in polyurethane markets, reduce environmental impacts, and meet the urgent need for green and sustainable development strategies. Among this, interest is the use of castor oil to make polyurethane because of its inedibility and the fact that it contains many functionalizable chemical groups. However, the poor thermal stability and low load-bearing capacity of castor-oil-based rigid polyurethane foam limits its application. Two methods were used to address these limitations: (i) more hydroxyl groups were introduced through simple chemical methods to increase the crosslinking density and (ii) four eco-friendly flame retardants were introduced to increase the thermal stability of polyurethane foams. Meanwhile, the influence of the flame retardant type and amount of flame retardant that would yield the best results was studied. Thus, phosphorus, nitrogen, and carbon-based flame retardants were introduced (10.2 wt.%) to the castor oil based-based polyurethane matrix. The test results revealed that the prepared castor oil-based polyurethane without flame retardants have 38.16 kg/m3 of apparent density, 94% closed cell content, and compression strength of 257 kPa. Therefore, this research findings provide a bio-based, low-cost, and effective alternative for rigid polyurethane foam production. Regardless of the addition of flame retardants, the shape of the free-rise foams maintained their structure, suggesting that there is acceptable compatibility between the flame retardants and castor oil-based polyurethane matrix. The physicochemical and mechanical properties, cell morphology, and thermal stability results further confirmed this observation. Flame retardancy and thermal stability increased with an increase in the flame-retardant percentage. Castor oil-based rigid polyurethane foams with phosphorus-based flame retardants exhibited good thermal properties but comparatively poor mechanical properties, whereas castor oil-based rigid polyurethane foams with nitrogen-based flame retardants exhibited excellent mechanical properties and relatively poor thermal properties. Interestingly, castor-oil-based rigid polyurethane foams with carbon-based flame retardants outperformed these two types of flame retardants. Thus, this study suggests that carbon-based flame retardants can significantly reduce the flammability of castor-oil-based polyurethanes without considerably affecting their mechanical properties

    Learning from Death: Health Education Considerations for Medical Tourists, Caregiving Companions, and Medical Tourism Providers

    Medical tourism is a process in which a consumer travels from one’s health jurisdiction to receive biomedical treatments or services, thus becoming a patient. This chapter explores how global media frame cases of patient death associated with the medical tourism (MT) process between 2009-2019. A qualitative content analysis of 50 patient mortality cases found that (1) a majority of media representations of medical tourism patient death are of middle-class, minority females between 25-55 years of age seeking cosmetic surgery internationally; (2) sudden death, grief, and bereavement counseling is noticeably absent from medical tourism providers (MTPs); and (3) the acknowledgement of medical risks from authority figures within the media reports is often vague and abstract. Recommendations and considerations for future medical tourists, their caregiving companions and medical tourism providers are offered

    The Dean Dittman Collection contains playbills, newspaper clippings, photographs, scrapbooks relating to the performing career of Gus Dean Dittmann, donated by Mr. Dittmann’s niece, Diane Vaught. Gus Dean Dittmann was born in Frontenac, Kansas and had a successful career as an actor on the stage, movies, radio, and television, performing as Dean Dittman (sometimes listed as Dean Dittmann). He was born in 1931 and attended the public schools in Frontenac and in the early 1950s, the Kansas Teachers College of Pittsburg, today’s Pittsburg State University. In 1953 he won the Lauritz Melchior Award which led to his studying at the Sorbonne in France, and with the Paris Opera. This resulted in a successful career as an actor and singer, first in Kansas City, Missouri then on to Broadway. He performed before Presidents Truman and Eisenhower. His several-decades long career included Broadway and touring productions of The Music Man, Annie, Oklahoma, My Fair Lady, Hello Dolly, L’il Abner, On the Twentieth Century, and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. He appeared onstage with such actors as Forrest Tucker, Madeline Kahn, Imogene Coca, and Martha Raye. He won the coveted Obie Award in 1968 for an off-Broadway production, The Cradle Will Rock. He also appeared in movies and television shows such as Bachelor Party, Designing Woman, Who’s the Boss, Cheers, Dukes of Hazzard, and T. J. Hooker. Dittmann lived in Los Angeles and in his free time he enjoyed gardening and gourmet cooking and entertaining.     A ring binder with reproductions of newspaper clippings about Eva Jessye and her career, and correspondence, printed programs, and photographs compiled by Bill Martin. Born in Coffeyville, Kansas, on January 20, 1895, Eva Alberta Jessye started her academic career in the public schools of Coffeyville and Iola, Kansas. At age 13 she attended Western University in Quindaro, Kansas. She graduated from Western University in 1914 and went on to Langston University in Oklahoma where she received a lifetime certificate in teaching. Jessye taught in elementary schools in Taft, Haskell, and Muskogee, Oklahoma before she became a reporter and columnist for the Baltimore (Maryland) Afro-American in 1925. In 1926 she joined a choral group in New York called the Dixie Jubilee Singers. This group would eventually become the world-renowned Eva Jessye Choir. The choir performed spirituals, work songs, ballads, ragtime, jazz, and light opera in a variety of mediums, such as radio, film, and stage. They were regulars on the “Major Bowes Family Radio Hour” and the “General Motors Hour.” In 1927 the Dixie Jubilee Singers worked in Harry A. Pollard’s film, Uncle Tom’s Cabin. The same year, Dr. Jessye compiled and published a critically acclaimed collection of songs titled My Spirituals. In 1929 King Vidor directed “Hallelujah”, the first musical motion picture with an all-Black cast. The film featured the Dixie Jubilee Singers with Jessye as choral director. Dr. Jessye was appointed choral director for the New York production of the Virgil Thomson and Gertrude Stein opera, “Four Saints in Three Acts” in 1934. In 1935 Jessye was selected by George Gershwin to be choral director for the original production of his 1935 folk-opera, “Porgy and Bess.” For the next three decades, Jessye was associated with almost every Porgy & Bess production worldwide, earning the unofficial title of \u27curator and guardian of the score’. Eva Jessye was also involved in humanitarian efforts. Her experiences as a black woman during the Jim Crow era influenced her involvement in the later Civil Rights movement. She collaborated with African-American notables Marian Anderson, Mary McLeod Bethune, Julia Davis, Eubie Blake, Langston Hughes, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Paul Robeson. In August 1963, Martin Luther King, Jr. selected the Eva Jessye Choir as the official chorus of the historic March on Washington. The choir performed “We Shall Overcome” and “Freedom Is the Thing We’re Talking About.” Tom Mboya, founder of Kenya’s Independence Movement Council and president of the People’s Convention Party, later used the recordings of these songs during Kenya’s struggle for independence. During the 1960s Eva Jessye also appeared in the motion pictures Black Like Me and Slaves. Dr. Jessye returned to academia in her later years. She established the Eva Jessye Afro-American Music Collection at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 1974. She established the Eva Jessye Collection at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas in 1977 and served as that University’s Artist-In-Residence from 1978 to 1981. During her lifetime Jessye received honorary degrees from Wilberforce University, Allen University, and Southern University, including an honorary doctorate. She also received numerous citations from government, educational, and musical organizations. In 1981, Governor John Carlin of Kansas declared Dr. Eva Jessye to be Kansas Ambassador for the Arts.     Five photographs of the football team of the Kansas Teachers College of Pittsburg (now Pittsburg State University) from the 1930s, taken by student photographer Gerald Barnard. Gerald W. (Jerry) Barnard was born in Oswego, Kansas in 1918. Barnard attended the Kansas Teachers College of Pittsburg (now Pittsburg State University) from 1936-1940 and after graduation, worked as an accountant. He worked with the Deming Investment Company and then the First National Bank of Oswego. He also served as the president of Oswego Industries, chairman of Mid-America, Inc., vice-president of the Kansas Bankers Association, chairman of the Kansas Development Credit Corporation, and president of the Tri-County Bankers Association. Barnard married Jane Weeks in 1939 and she passed away in 2002. They had three daughters and one son.
