    POPULATION DYNAMICS AND HABITAT USE BY GRAY BATS IN AN ANTHROPOGENICALLY ALTERED LANDSCAPE

    Habitat loss resulting from land use change is among the greatest threats to biodiversity. Yet, in some cases, imperiled wildlife species may benefit from anthropogenic disturbance. The expansion of urbanization, agriculture, renewable energy, and mining practices impact conservation efforts for threatened and endangered bat species, and particularly species that are affected by white nose syndrome (WNS). The federally endangered gray bat (Myotis grisescens) is a cavernicolous species that is susceptible to WNS. Due to their unique roosting and foraging requirements, gray bats inhabit a small portion of the accessible caves within their geographic range. As habitat loss persists, gray bats have been documented using anthropogenic structures in the absence of suitable, naturally occurring roosts. To better understand why gray bats select certain anthropogenic structures we examined the population dynamics of a gray bat colony and their use of microclimate characteristics inside a stormwater system in southeast Kansas. We described changes in temperature and relative humidity inside the roost and performed capture-mark-recapture surveys to estimate within-season population dynamics. Temperatures within the primary roost sites were on average warmer than outside temperatures, and relative humidity was We also used acoustic surveys and occupancy models to evaluate the effects of landscape composition, vegetation structure, and food availability on gray bat habitat use. The best-supported occupancy models showed a negative association with percent agriculture cover and distance from the roost site, and a positive association with canopy density, percent developed and forest cover. The stable microclimate inside the stormwater system likely provided the energetic benefits necessary for female gray bats to produce offspring. The anthropogenically altered landscape, including disturbance from surface mining, likely created the roosting and foraging habitat required for gray bats. The value of abandoned mined lands and other disturbed ecosystems should be considered when developing conservation strategies for imperiled species

    Vascular Plants of the Caribou-Targhee National Forest and Curlew National Grassland in Southeastern Idaho, Western Wyoming, and Northern Utah

    Due to a historical paucity of collections from and the absence of a comprehensive floristic treatment for parts of the Caribou-Targhee National Forest and Curlew National Grassland, an updated inventory for the area was needed. I present an annotated checklist of the vascular plants documented from the Caribou-Targhee National Forest and Curlew National Grassland. A total of new 3189 voucher specimens were collected for this project in 2021 and 2022. To compile the annotated checklist, I consulted both newly collected specimens and specimen data from online botanical databases. A total of 1557 taxa (species, subspecies, varieties, and hybrids), 1423 species (including hybrids), 481 genera, and 94 families are known to occur in the study area. At least three new state records (Draba thompsonii (C.L. Hitchc.) G. Mulligan & Al-Shehbaz, Sphaeralca parvifolia A. Nelson, and Boechera lasiocarpa (Rollins) Dorn) and 137 new county records were documented, a few of which were published previously. An additional 38 first records were discovered, of which approximately 21.1% were not native to the United States. A number of other important occurrences were documented, such as occurrences of rare taxa, Forest Service Region 4 Sensitive Species, and new reports of non-native taxa. The large number of documented county records supports the continued applicability of the Wallacean Shortfall in the flora of western North America. Employees of the U.S. Forest Service, academic researchers, and others will be able to use the annotated checklist to better understand, research, and conserve the flora of the Caribou-Targhee National Forest and Curlew National Grassland

    Dr. Paul Stuart Sell was a longtime dentist, practicing in Independence, Kansas, and an avid musician. This collection of materials includes photographs, sheet music, songs and song books he used to play at events, and miscellaneous artifacts. The Paul Stuart Sell Collection is divided into three series: Photograph, Music and Miscellaneous. The Photograph series contains photographs of Paul Sell at various stages of his life, and of his father, John Sell. There are photographs of his store, Cherryvale, and the Girard Fire Department. The Music series includes eleven pieces of sheet music that he composed. There are sixteen different song lyrics by him and, a printed programs and play lists. There is also a song book and five different Christmas Carol books. There are two copies of hymnals. The Miscellaneous series consists of two letters, to Sell and to Ray Fennimore, a flyer of a Christian education program, a copy of “Jack Horner” (most likely written by Sell or one of his sons), a sheet of unused letterhead from Sell and Son, Girard, and an autographed LP album entitled “St. George Serbian Orthodox Church Presents Kornelije Stankovich in Songs from the Montreal Expo’67 Program”, Dean Croxton, Director.https://digitalcommons.pittstate.edu/fa/1094/thumbnail.jp

    Teller family collection, 1949-2001

    A collection of science fiction books and magazines. The Stephen and Nikki Patrick Teller Collection includes over 1600 science fiction novels, mostly mass-market paperbacks, mostly from the 1940s into the 1990s. These have been cataloged and are housed in the Special Collections & University Archives. A listing of these titles can be found by searching “KFPH Teller” in our online catalog. There is also a collection of science fiction magazines, from the 1940s into the 2000s. See below for a listing of these titles within the boxes they are stored. These can also be viewed in the Special Collections & University Archives. Stephen James Teller was born in 1940 in Chicago, Illinois. He attended Chicago Teachers College and Roosevelt University (Chicago), where he received his A.B., and then earned a master’s and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in 1963 and 1967. He began teaching at the Kansas State College of Pittsburg (today’s Pittsburg State University) in the fall semester of 1967, as an assistant professor in the English department. He married Nikki Patrick, a local reporter, in 1976. Dr. Teller spent his entire career at Pittsburg State University, and retired in 2010. His wife, Nikki, passed away from cancer in 2014. In addition to the hundreds of science fiction pulp paperbacks and hardcovers, Dr. Teller collected the vast array of Wizard of Oz books, and was quite an Oz enthusiast.
