Politics and Gender in Meskwaki Tribal Membership

    No full text
Early observations (1600s-1800s) concerning the Meshkwaki, a Central Algonquian Indigenous group of the Western Great Lakes and eastern Prairies of the United States, emphasized the perceived primary role of patri-based institutions. This attention was echoed by the anthropologists of the late 1800s and early 1900s, who prioritized and described the role and purpose of patrilineal descent. In 1937 the US Government and its supporters forced the Meshkwaki to adopt a tribal constitution which included the abandonment of their traditional leadership structure and the introduction of patrilineal descent for tribal membership. This poster will begin by contextualizing patri-based institutions within pre-1937 Meshkwaki culture and will discuss pre-1937 internal conceptions of tribal membership. It will then re-examine the circumstances of the 1937 tribal constitution, followed by presenting the subsequent accommodations made in regard to the patrilineal membership rule by the tribal government from inception to the present-day, as well as discuss post-1937 internal conceptions of tribal membership. From this contextualization, the poster will shift towards a stance of decolonizing the post-1937 Meshkwaki tribal membership mandate, discussing the 1937 coercion and post-1937 conflicts concerning that decision, and the adjustments made since 1937 to accommodate matrilineal-only Meshkwaki descendants. Historical data will be integrated with contemporary fieldwork details to explicate our treatment of the problematic Meshkwaki tribal membership requirement

    No full text
This poster is going to discuss the importance of play and dive deeply into sensory play. Sensory play is a crucial aspect of childhood development. Sensory play allows children to explore and engage with the environment through their senses. Sensory play helps children build cognitive skills, fine and gross motor skills, language skills, social and emotional skills, and problem-solving skills. Sensory play also supports special education and students with sensory processing disorders by providing therapeutic benefits. Overall, sensory play is an essential component of a child\u27s development and should be an essential tool that is prioritized in classrooms

Student mental health concerns among adolescents and young adults are continuing to rise (Reis et al., 2023, Ashoorian, 2018; Burns et al., 2017; Davies et al., 2016). The purpose of the present study was to explore teacher preparation faculty perceptions of student mental health concerns. The author adapted Stine Ekorne’s (2016) Perceived Competence Scale to score each participant\u27s perceived competence, responsibility, and emotions related to addressing student mental health concerns. The 27-item Qualtrics questionnaire was distributed to faculty and academic staff in the School of Education at a midwestern public university. Participants were recruited through email. Participants included tenured and tenure-track faculty and instructional academic staff members in the School of Education at a small midwestern university. An analysis of all participants showed an overall high score of perceived competence, responsibility, and emotions related to addressing student mental health concerns. However, preliminary results revealed that faculty and academic staff that do not have high school K-12 teaching experience scored the lowest in perceived competence in addressing student mental health concerns among their students in higher education. Future studies must recruit a larger number of participants who serve as teacher preparation faculty at a multitude of higher education institutions to further examine the findings of this study

    No full text
The goal of this study was to examine the effectiveness of the UFLI intervention in increasing the reading skills of students who were identified as at-risk readers (at or below the 10th percentile) in their grade. Three first-grade students ages 7 to 8 years old, were assigned to a small group intervention using the UFLI curriculum twice a week. The 30-minute intervention focused on modeling and teaching skills for digraph sounds. The intervention tasks included segmenting sounds and words, spelling, and short passage reading to increase students\u27 phonemic awareness, decoding, fluency, and irregular word identification skills. The results showed that UFLI showed moderate to large gains in students\u27 decoding abilities

Using Hermeneutic Phenomenology to Research Teacher Professional Learning

    Get PDF
The professional growth of teachers is complex to study given the many factors involved in both adult learning and student outcomes. This article proposes phenomenology as an effective philosophy and method to provide a holistic investigation by describing a hermeneutic study of the professional learning experiences of teachers in the International Baccalaureate program. It is hoped this account will clarify some of the misconceptions regarding the different forms of phenomenology and provide detailed guidance to researchers utilizing this methodology to study professional development and other forms of learning in educational contexts
