SUPERINTENDENTS’ ABILITY TO MEET A NALOXONE STATUTE: A MIXED-METHODS STUDY DURING A MINNESOTA OPIOID OVERDOSE DEATH EPIDEMIC

    No full text
The purpose of this study is to examine the impact, for public school district stakeholders, of the July 1, 2023, Minnesota (MN) statute stating that all school buildings need to keep available two doses of nasal Naloxone (defined in section 604A.04, subdivision 1, in compliance with section 151.37, subdivision 12). This will be measured from the perspective of MN public K-12 school superintendents. The opioid overdose death epidemic is one of many epidemics impacting the educational system. In 2020, the opioid overdose death rate in the United States had increased by almost 30% in one year (Alexander & Hall, 2023). Eighth graders across Minnesota report inappropriate use of prescription painkillers at a higher rate than freshmen and juniors in a 2019 survey (Drug Overdose Dashboard, 2023). This research was conducted using a pragmatist research lens, supported by a mixed-method design. The methods of data collection included 1) an electronic questionnaire distributed to all Minnesota superintendents made up of 576 school districts, 2) an environmental scan that included document analysis (i.e., public communications shared to superintendents from key agencies regarding this statute), and 3) in-person interviews with a self-selected group of superintendents. The results provided facilitators (i.e., community services, policy template, effective communication), and barriers (i.e., lack of understanding the problem, lack of knowledge of resources) to implement the Minnesota legislation regarding nasal Naloxone. Also identified, personal (i.e., parent) and contextual factors (i.e., proficiency with local and state government) of superintendents potentially impacting implementation

Resilience Education Program: Combining CBT with CICO for Anxiety

    No full text
This case study presents a school-based intervention designed to reduce anxiety symptoms in a fifth-grade male student. The selected Tier 2 intervention, the Resilience Education Program (REP), is composed of evidence-based strategies and includes five weekly, structured lessons rooted in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) principles. The curriculum uses cognitive-behavioral instruction (CBI) to teach students how to identify emotions, apply coping strategies, and reframe unhelpful thoughts. REP also includes a Check-In Check-Out (CICO) system to reinforce daily skill use and build a strong student-adult relationship. The student was progress monitored through multiple data sources, including the Revised Children’s Anxiety and Depression Scale (RCADS), teacher reports, DBRs, and observations. Pre- and post-intervention RCADS scores showed a decrease in anxiety subscales and overall anxiety and depression scales from clinically significant levels to levels in the average range

Analysis of Self: My Journey to Healing and Helping

The Analysis of Self led me to take an inventory of who I am as a person and a professional, and what led me to where I am today as a Clinical Mental Health Counselor. This project satisfies the requirements of the graduate program. Besides taking an in-depth overview of my personal history, I also included assessments such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and the Strong’s Interest Inventory (SII) to uncover various aspects of my personality, strengths and qualities. Interventions that align with my counseling style are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Person-Centered Therapy because of their evidence-based success and because of the population I intend to work with.. Interviews were conducted to gain an outsider’s view into my growth and counseling style

Phenomenological Study of Disabled Student Experiences Related to Inclusive Learning Environments in Public Higher Education

Students with disabilities represent the largest and most diverse minority group in higher education, facing numerous barriers to accessing their learning environments. Historically, societal views have marginalized individuals with disabilities, perpetuating exclusion and discrimination. This study explores the experiences of disabled students in higher education, examining various models of disability, including the moral, charity, medical, social, and human rights models. These models influence how students experience their learning environments. Higher education has traditionally been exclusive, primarily serving privileged groups. However, as societal narratives evolve, disciplines like disability studies have emerged, challenging these dominant narratives. The researcher, a community faculty member with disabilities, uses a critical disability inquiry paradigm to understand the power dynamics and societal constructs that influence privilege and oppression based on disability and other identities. This study employs Social Dominance Theory and Social Learning Theory to explore the experiences of disabled students in higher education. The study aims to understand the impact of inclusive learning spaces and the principles of Universal Design for Learning on disabled students\u27 experiences. It highlights the importance of including disabled voices in research and decision-making processes. The findings reveal that while students with disabilities face significant barriers, inclusive practices and supportive environments can enhance their educational experiences. The study underscores the need for higher education institutions to adopt inclusive practices, reduce ableism, and create more equitable learning environments

Examining the Nexus of Communication, Leadership, and Employee Satisfaction in Community Colleges: A Mixed-Methods Exploration

Employee turnover and attrition are not something that organizations look forward to. This is particularly significant at community colleges, where staff retention is important for stability and student success. While employees leave for a variety of reasons, dissatisfaction is one of the main reasons employees look for other jobs. This research seeks to answer the central question: How do different leadership styles and communication practices impact employee satisfaction levels at rural two-year community colleges? A mixed methods case study was conducted using survey and semi-structured interviews at four rural Midwestern colleges

Stories in Environmental Psychology examines the interactions between humans and their environments, both natural and built. The book uses narratives to illustrate concepts such as white flight, the transactional nature of human-environment interactions, and the challenges of conducting research in this field. Each chapter begins with a story to help readers understand and connect with the theoretical concepts discussed.https://red.mnstate.edu/oer-books/1003/thumbnail.jp

Adolescents and Technology - The True Impact of Tech

With the rapid advancement and increasing accessibility of technology, research has begun to focus on the impacts technology use can have on adolescents. Many young people think they understand how to use technology, but they may not understand the impacts it can have on their life. By having an understanding of these implications, both positive and negative, they can adjust their technology habits to increase their quality of life and set themselves up for success in the future. This paper begins with a review of the literature about the relationship between adolescents and technology followed by a training made for parents to give them the information to make informed decisions about their adolescent’s technology use. Though technology will continue to advance, having a deeper understanding of the relationship between adolescents and technology will help foster a more positive outcome for future generations
