Affective and reflective attitudes toward vegetarian food consumption: the effect of goal priming
Objectives: The study’s primary goal was to investigate the effect of goal priming
on implicit and explicit attitudes toward vegetarian food consumption and
food choice behavior within the context of dual-process models that describe
sustainable behavior.
Methods: A total of 128 participants were randomly assigned to either a goal
priming intervention group or a control group. After reading a short priming
text, all participants completed an explicit rating task, an Implicit Association
Test (IAT), and a simulated online supermarket task to assess actual food-related
choices.
Results: Participants in the intervention group exhibited significantly more
positive implicit attitudes toward vegetarian food compared to those in the
control group. Explicit attitudes toward vegetarian food were also significantly
more positive in the intervention group, although to a smaller extent. No
significant group differences were found in explicit attitudes toward meat-based
nutrition or in food choice behavior. However, mediation analysis revealed
a significant indirect effect of goal priming on behavior via implicit attitudes.
Exploratory analyses showed consistent gender differences across all outcome
variables, which attenuated the priming effects when included as a covariate.
Conclusion: Although the intervention did not result in direct behavioral
change, the findings support the potential of goal priming to influence
automatic affective and reflective processes that may precede the development
of sustainable behavior
Illumination pancreatic cancer angiogenesis: Insights into tumor perfusion and microvascular architecture using the CAM model
Background: Global Cancer Statistics 2020 reported a total of 495773 new cases and 466003 related deaths for pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) represents the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths with an overall published five-year survival rate of less than 6%. Currently, surgical resection is the only potentially curative option followed by adjuvant chemotherapy which can only be opted in about 15% of patients due to the advanced stage at which the disease is usually diagnosed. This study aims to test various chemotherapeutic drugs to discover the most effective one in the inhibition of tumor growth and metastasis.
Methods: To study the tumor’s microvascular architecture, human PDAC tissue are engrafted on the chorion allantois membrane (CAM) model, then changes in angiogenesis will be monitored by Laser Speckle Contrast Imaging (LSCI), perfusion will be visualized via ultra high frequency ultrasound and anastomoses can be visualized via immunohistological staining using isolectin and human CD31.
Tumor spheroids derived from circulating tumor cells displayed heightened invasiveness and vascular integration, offering critical insights into their metastatic behavior. In this project PDAC and tumorspheres are cultured on the CAM and histological sections support the findings above, opening a gateway to tumor microvasculature insights and future potential treatment options.
Result: Throughout a seven-day cultivation period, PDAC tissues exhibited progressive vascularization, marked by the formation of functional anastomoses between human and chicken blood vessels within 72 hours post-engraftment. Whole-mount staining and immunofluorescence confirm the presence of anastomoses between both species, underscoring active and dynamic angiogenic mechanisms. Quantitative analyses revealed significant changes in tumor volume and perfusion, supported by histological evaluations and advanced 3D.
Conclusion: The effect of oxaliplatin can be evaluated in the CAM model, which is a promising model for the future. This will help shed light on future therapies, including personalized therapy for individual patients, and will potentially improve the prognosis of future PDAC patients
Interprofessional approach to personalized medication management and therapy optimization in IBD care
A considerable number of patients with chronic inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD)
are required to manage extensive polypharmaceutical regimes, which significantly
elevates the risk of drug–drug interactions. Also, the disease’s impact often leads to
the consumption of additional self-medication by the patients such as naturopathic
remedies to alleviate disease-induced suffering and nutritional supplements to
compensate for malabsorption syndromes inherent to the condition. There is
a well-established consensus that polymedication coupled with unregulated
supplementary intake can jeopardize the safety of drug therapy. Despite this,
pharmaceutical co-supervision—proven to mitigate adverse drug events and
enhance patient adherence to treatment—is generally lacking in routine clinical
settings. Furthermore, the assessment of individual therapy adherence, a crucial
predictive factor for therapeutic outcomes, is frequently suboptimal. In response
to these issues, this study implemented an interdisciplinary approach wherein
a team comprising medical and pharmaceutical professionals conducted a
comprehensive survey coupled with a medication review for patients attending
an IBD outpatient clinic. Employing an IBD-specific questionnaire alongside
the patients’ documented medication regimens enabled the identification and
subsequent discussion of current therapeutic concerns and potential medicationrelated
risks during follow-up consultations. This intervention aimed to bolster
individual patient satisfaction and enhance medication safety, ultimately fostering
sustained success in IBD management
Effects of Implementing an Enhanced Recovery After Cardiac Surgery Protocol with On-Table Extubation on Patient Outcome and Satisfaction—A Before–After Study
Background/Objectives: Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols aim to improve clinical outcomes, shorten hospital length of stay (LOS), and reduce costs through a multidisciplinary perioperative approach. Although introduced in colorectal surgery, they are less established in cardiac surgery, especially in combination with on-table extubation (OTE). This study evaluates the impact of a novel ERAS concept with OTE (RERACS) in elective aortic-valve-replacement and coronary bypass surgery. Methods: In a monocentric study, we compared a prospective RERACS-group (n = 114) to a retrospective control group (n = 119) (TRIAL Registration (DRKS00031402). The RERACS concept contained multiple perioperative treatment measures such as respiratory training, short fasting, and OTE. The control group received standard care. Results: Primary endpoint: postoperative LOS. Secondary measurements: length of postoperative vasoactive drug support, duration of mechanical ventilation, complication rate, and patient satisfaction on the second postoperative day. RERACS patients showed significantly shorter postoperative length of stay (ICU: 40 ± 34 h vs. 56 ± 51 h, p = 0.005; hospital: 9 ± 4 d vs. 11 ± 6 d, p = 0.028), lower nosocomial infection rates (24% vs. 40%), fewer cases of postoperative cognitive dysfunction ((subsyndromal) delirium 40% vs. 57%), reduced nausea and vomiting (14.9% vs. 32.8%), and faster weaning from catecholamines (22 ± 30 h vs. 42 ± 48 h, p < 0.001), as well as high patient satisfaction. Conclusions: Our study indicated that an ERAS concept with OTE is safe and associated with faster and improved recovery, including lower catecholamine requirements, reduced LOS, and high patient satisfaction in low-risk cardiac surgery
Development and Validation of Photoacoustic Sensor Systems for Human Breath Analysis
This thesis deals with the development of photoacoustic sensor systems designed to detect specific VOC biomarkers, with the focus on acetone and isoprene, in human breath. These VOCs are of particular interest because of their relatively high abundance and correlation with known metabolic processes. The research presented here begins with a review of the current state of breath analysis and sampling techniques, with a focus on the physiological and metabolic effects that influence the composition of exhaled VOCs. The underlying principles of photoacoustic signal generation are explored in detail, followed by a description of the specifications for photoacoustic sensor development in terms of breath analysis. Key challenges include the development of robust sensor systems that account for cross-sensitivities of environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, and pressure, as well as spectral interference from other compounds in breath. Besides, the experimental work includes the verification and characterization of various sensor systems, with a special focus on a cost-effective approach using an UV-LED for acetone detection. The performance of the systems is validated through measurements of real breath samples, with results compared against those obtained using a real-time mass spectrometer (PTR-ToF-MS). These findings represent a significant step towards the development of a future PoC device capable of non-invasive breath analysis. Additionally, topics such as the explanation of relaxation effects and the investigation of biomarkers like methane, ethane, acetylene, ethanol, and OCS are also examined. In summary, this thesis contributes to the growing field of breath analysis by presenting a comprehensive approach to develop photoacoustic sensor systems for VOC detection. The work demonstrates the potential of PAS as a cost-effective, sensitive, and selective technology for use in non-invasive diagnostics, paving the way for future PoC devices
The Politics of Vulnerability Concerning Sexual and Spiritual Abuse in the Catholic Church
This article addresses methodological approaches to the study of vulnerable cohorts with specific attention to definitions of the term vulnerability. In particular, it investigates the issue of adults, particularly women, who have experienced abuse in the Catholic Church. Relevant analysis in this area is primarily interdisciplinary-based research and includes sociological and psychological perspectives and theological and historical analysis. This article critically analyzes the current definitions of vulnerability in Church and research contexts, and the methodological approaches utilized in defining vulnerable cohorts. It argues that specific ethical principles and methodological strategies are required to safeguard participants and researchers guided by the principles of feminist ethics. These include (1) attention to the uses and definitions of key terms by participants and researchers; (2) identifying the positionality of researchers as central to an ethical standpoint including their exposure to secondary trauma; and (3) establishing inclusive methods such as participatory research and sensitive recruitment. Paying attention to ongoing issues experienced by cohorts identified as vulnerable in research, including the stigmatization of their status, marginalization of their cases, and trauma of disclosure alongside ongoing risk assessment, is central to the research design process
