Abstract
This paper presents an overview of a study of the relationship between servant leadership and organizational commitment. The study included a convenience sample of 84 full and part-time employees of a health professions education unit within an academic health center. Participants were surveyed using the Executive Servant Leadership Scale (ESLS) to assess servant leadership and the Klein Unidimensional Target-free (KUT) instrument to assess organizational commitment. Data analysis was conducted using Kendall’s tau-b and Spearman’s rho. Results showed that there is a significant positive relationship between servant leadership and organizational commitment.

Algal Biodiversity Survey of the Middle Chattahoochee River Using DNA Metabarcoding
Get PDFAquatic plants play vital roles in water systems by providing ecological services, and one group that is understudied is algae. Algae play a crucial role in water systems as bioindicators and primary producers. They can be challenging to identify with the naked eye, so researchers have been using DNA metabarcoding, where DNA belonging to specific taxa can be isolated and identified from water samples. The objective of this study was to conduct an algal biodiversity survey on the middle Chattahoochee River system in Georgia. Water samples (1L) were filtered and sent to RTL Genomics for sequencing and processing; the data was then analyzed through PAST software to create diversity indices. Overall, time of sampling, lake population, and the interaction between the two showed significance for the following variables: number of individuals, number of taxa, Simpson diversity index, dominance, Shannon diversity index, and evenness. Future recommendations include increasing the number and type of sampling locations and the inclusion of samples collected throughout the year. The preliminary assessment of algae diversity presented here will provide future guidance for water quality management and biodiversity conservation along the middle Chattahoochee River

Time on the market and probability of sale using a generalized geometric hazard model
No full textThis study makes two main contributions to the applied econometrics literature. First, it shows how the all-important marginal effects for time on the market and probability of sale can be obtained from any hazard model. Second, it extends the generalization of the geometric due to Gómez-Déniz, E. 2010. “Another Generalization of the Geometric Distribution.” Test 19: 399–415 to include covariates for use in the estimation of time on the market and probability of sale regressions in real estate, thus creating an entirely new hazard model based on probability of sale rather than time on the market. For the generalized geometric we develop expressions for the marginal effects (with approximate standard errors) for both the probability of sale and time on the market. This formulation allows the impact of changes in independent variables on both the probability of sale and time on the market to be determined from a single regression model. For comparison, we also obtain these two sets of marginal effects for the popular Weibull hazard model. The geometric, generalized geometric, and Weibull hazard models, along with two sets of marginal effects for each, are estimated using data on condominium listings in a metropolitan area in Florida
ESOL pre-service teachers’ culturally and linguistically responsive teaching in mixed-reality simulations
No full textPurpose: Simulation technology has been used as a viable alternative to provide a real life setting in teacher education. Applying mixed-reality classroom simulations to English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) teacher preparation, this qualitative case study aims to examine how pre-service teachers (PSTs) practice culturally and linguistically responsive teaching to work with an English learner (EL) avatar and other avatar students. Design/methodology/approach: Using an embedded single case study, three PSTs’ teaching simulations and interviews were collected and analyzed. Findings: This study found PST participants made meaningful connections between theory and practices of culturally and linguistically responsive teaching, particularly by connecting academic concepts to students’ life experiences, promoting cultural diversity, using instructional scaffolding and creating a safe environment. Nevertheless, they needed further improvement in incorporating cultural diversity into content lessons, creating a challenging and supportive classroom and developing interactional scaffolding for ELs’ language development. The findings also show that while PST participants perceived simulation technology as very beneficial, expanding the range of technological affordances could provide PSTs an opportunity to undertake a full range of critical teaching strategies for ELs. Originality/value: This research contributes to broadening the realm of mixed-reality technology by applying it to ESOL teacher education and has implications for both ESOL teacher educators and simulation technology researchers
Analogy co-construction as a learning strategy in life-span development classes
Get PDFAnalogies are commonplace heuristic tools in classrooms across all educational levels and content areas. In the present investigation, analogy-enhanced learning was examined in relation to conceptual applications of major developmental theories in undergraduate life-span development classes. To this end, systematic comparisons were undertaken between a learning condition in which individual students created their own analogies and a learning condition involving analogy co-construction as generated by small groups of students working cooperatively. On all quantitative and qualitative measures, results favored group co-construction of analogies over self-generated analogy creation. Findings are discussed in terms of social-constructivist and transformative-learning principles
Teacher Impact on Student Growth Mindset
Get PDFThe main goals of this study were to determine if student growth mindset impacted achievement and motivation and to see if gender and ethnicity made a difference in the type of mindset a student possesses. The study was conducted in a suburban middle school in Georgia with a predominantly white population and above-average socio-economic status. Ninety-five students from four 7th grade social studies classes took part in the eight-week study. The results from the study showed that there was no statistically significant relationship between mindset gains and academic gains; however, there was a strong positive, statistically significant relationship between mindset gains and motivation gains. These results indicated that motivation could be the linking factor between mindset and higher academic achievement

It allows course content to match current events in real time. Students learn how to analyze the credibility of various sources. Class conversations are more dynamic. Students develop a better understanding of opinions that differ from their own. Lastly, students are less inclined to believe that the instructor is attempting to influence their personal beliefs and opinions on politics
