    Who Publishes in Economic Education? A Bibliographic Analysis of the First 50 Years of the Journal of Economic Education

    We examined the characteristics of the authors who published academic articles in the Journal of Economic Education (JEE) during its first 50 years and identify those economists who were most productive in developing economic education as a specialized field. Employing bibliometric data, we review trends in the salient characteristics of authorship with special attention paid to gender, geography, institutional affiliation, and other factors. We also explore the JEE’s impact on the development of teaching-related research through citation analysis over the course of the journal’s various editorial regimes. The results reveal the relative impacts of authors and their economic education scholarship over the past half century and provide some insight into the possible future of the field.     Interlocking Toy Building Blocks as Modules for Undergraduate Introductory and General Chemistry Classroom Teaching

    Interlocking toy building blocks (e.g., Lego) as chemistry teaching modules are presented. Interlocking building blocks were assembled on a baseplate to depict chemistry concepts of Lewis structures, chemical bonding, conjugate acid-base pairs, types of chemical reactions, irregularity in ionization energy trends, and the decay of a radioactive isotope. The modules were presented to visualize these chemical concepts in undergraduate introductory and general chemistry classrooms. Modules were presented on a document camera in an online mode of delivery

    The Impact of Digital Portfolios on the Economics End of Course Assessment

    Digital Portfolios, also known as electronic portfolios, became more visible in the educational landscape. This study employs a causal comparative design to assess the impact of web-based digital portfolios on seniors’ standardized economics assessment scores at a Metro Atlanta high school. The purpose of this study is to determine if students’ use of digital portfolios caused differences in economics end-of-course (EOC) assessment scores (dependent variable) between different groups of high school students (independent variables) across two years of implementation. Using the first-generation activity theory as the theoretical framework, the researcher frames the study as an activity system where the groups of high school seniors (subjects), digital portfolios (tools), and the objective is earning proficient scores on the economics EOC assessment. Data was collected from the spring 2018 and spring 2019 Georgia Milestones economics assessments and analyzed with a factorial ANOVA. The researcher found statistically significant differences between the mean economics EOC assessment scores of students who used digital portfolios in their economics classes compared to students who did not. Of the students who used digital portfolios, the researcher also found statistically significant differences between students enrolled in AP economics courses compared to students enrolled in regular economics courses and statistically significant differences between gifted and non-gifted students. Implications from the study could initiate a paradigm shift in the approach to purposefully fusing technology into secondary classrooms, especially economics classrooms. Furthermore, the findings of this study could create a demand for more research or training of specific technological strategies to support student learning in economics, preparation for end-of course tests, and other summative exams

    Keeping what you like: grandfathering and health insurance coverage take-up rates under the ACA

According to various reports, between 1.8 million and 4.7 million health insurance plans were replaced shortly after passage of the Affordable Care Act of 2010 with new ACA-compliant plans. In order to limit this occurrence, provisions in the ACA included “grandfathering,” which allowed many Americans to retain health insurance coverage that was in place on or before the ACA was signed into law. These health insurance plans were in many cases favored by individuals and employees because they had been customized, unlike many of the new non-grandfathered plans. This study explores the effect of grandfathering on health insurance coverage take-up rates by employees, given that there are some key differences between grandfathered and non-grandfathered plans that perhaps make the former relatively more attractive to employees. Using survey data from the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Health Research Educational Trust, difference-in-difference regressions reported here suggest that take-up rates for grandfathered health insurance plans are generally higher than those for non-grandfathered plans. Estimates generally place these take-up rate differences, favoring grandfathered plans, somewhere between 2.9 and 8.2 percentage points, depending on plan type, firm size and firm location. This finding suggests that more flexible plans are needed to increase employer-sponsored health insurance coverage

    Servant Leadership, Optimal Experience, and Meaningful Life

    Optimal experience – also known as Flow – was coined by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi in 1975 in his research study of joy, creativity, and the total involvement with life. Optimal experience is about focused attention and control of consciousness. Likewise, servant leadership is a conscious choice which aspires one to lead (Greenleaf, 1970). After a close examination of the philosophy of servant leadership by Greenleaf (1970), the attributes and behaviours of servant leaders by Laub (1999), Russell and Stone (2002), Patterson (2003), Keith (2008), Spears (2010), and Sipe and Frick (2015), it is argued that the work of a servant leader meets most if not all of the prescriptions of the flow model as listed by Csikszentmihalyi (1990). In the state of flow, a servant leader’s personal identity (i.e. the concept of self) and social identity (i.e. the concept of self based on perceived membership in a relevant social group) is also consolidated. A practical implication of this conceptual discussion is that a servant leader, who serves the betterment of others and the greater good of the society, should create an environment for others to experience flow. When the cumulated works of a servant leader fit together into a unified optimal experience, he/she finds fulfillment and lives a meaningful life. This is an example of the power and promise of servant leadership as posed by Greenleaf (1970)

    Forest Structure, above-Ground Carbon Stocks, and Productivity along an Elevational Gradient in the Ecuadorian Andes

    The Andean forest provides a natural laboratory for evaluating long-term interactions between forests and variation in environmental parameters along elevational gradients. In particular, the mechanisms that control above-ground carbon stocks (AGC) and natural dynamics in mountain ecosystems constitute a potentially powerful tool for understanding the function of these ecosystems and their response to current climate change scenarios or past human disturbances. The present study integrates biotic (rarefied species richness and leaf traits) and abiotic (climate, soil properties and degradation) factors as possible drivers of AGC stocks, AGC net change (AGCnt), AGC productivity (AGCp) and AGC mortality (AGCk), along an elevational gradient of ca. 3000 m in the montane forests of the Ecuadorian Andes. My findings show that AGC metrics respond to elevational gradients (climate conditions) and past human disturbances. I found that temperature constitutes the primary filter for forest structure, AGC stocks, AGCnt and AGCp along the elevational gradient, where abiotic factors such as degradation and soil properties represent the main drivers for AGCk. This study provides insight into the processes that control patterns of AGC metrics in mountainous ecosystems, where temperature is likely the most important source of AGC variation in Andean forests

    Examining K-12 Principals\u27 Leadership Role and their Beliefs Toward Technology Integration in the 21st Century Classroom

    Educational experts have evolved substantially over the past several decades in their thinking about educational leadership and the critical role that principals play in supporting the teaching and learning environment within schools through their leadership behaviors. Although educational leaders have had a significant impact on the field of education to integrate technology effectively with the goal of increasing student achievement and overall school performance, most of the research on technology integration has been teacher-focused, rather than on principals’ preparation, skill, knowledge, and related leadership. Continuation of teacher-focused research, though beneficial, has left a research gap concerning the skills and preparation that are needed by principals to become digital instructional leaders. Using a causal comparative quantitative research design, this study included eight K-12 principals and 20 teachers from elementary, middle, and high schools conveniently sampled from each of the schools in the selected district. The study measured K-12 principals’ and teachers’ knowledge of Teacher Digital Age Learning and Instructional Leader Digital Age Learning. The data were collected using a web-based survey and analyzed utilizing a series of independent samples t-tests. The results indicated that there was not a statistically significant difference in school principals’ and teachers’ perceptions of Teacher Digital Age Learning. Further, a statistically significant difference did not exist between the principals’ and teachers’ perceptions of Instructional Leader Digital Age Learning. The study’s findings could provide useful data for the district\u27s leadership development program to cultivate strategies that could assist principals in their acquisition of knowledge and skills regarding technology in schools

    Exploiting pull-in/pull-out hysteresis in electrostatic mems sensor networks to realize a novel sensing continuous-time recurrent neural network

    The goal of this paper is to provide a novel computing approach that can be used to reduce the power consumption, size, and cost of wearable electronics. To achieve this goal, the use of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) sensors for simultaneous sensing and computing is introduced. Specifically, by enabling sensing and computing locally at the MEMS sensor node and utilizing the usually unwanted pull in/out hysteresis, we may eliminate the need for cloud computing and reduce the use of analog-to-digital converters, sampling circuits, and digital processors. As a proof of concept, we show that a simulation model of a network of three commercially available MEMS accelerometers can classify a train of square and triangular acceleration signals inherently using pull-in and release hysteresis. Furthermore, we develop and fabricate a network with finger arrays of parallel plate actuators to facilitate coupling between MEMS devices in the network using actuating assemblies and biasing assemblies, thus bypassing the previously reported coupling challenge in MEMS neural networks

    Cooperation and spillovers in healthcare R&D: Theory and evidence

    This study tests the hypothesis that the research and development activity that is taking place in medical schools will influence the research and development activity that is occurring in hospitals, and vice-versa. To do so, we present a game in which the flow (short run) and level (long run) of research and development activities in medical schools determines the flow and level of research and development endeavors in hospitals (and vice-versa). The division of labor that occurs in our game entails the specialization in basic research by medical schools that leads to application and refinement of the results from that work by hospital practitioners. In turn, the refinements made by hospital practitioners informs further medical school research. Empirical support for our hypothesis is provided using data from the Association of American Medical Colleges, the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy and the National Science Foundation
