Green user electronics lifecycle behavior and planning mechanisms
This paper seeks to understand general user intentions toward engaging in green information technology (IT) behaviors, and in engaging with the consumer electronics lifecycle, which includes not only adoption and use, but also disposal. Based upon an extended planned behavior theoretical framework, our study suggests that what we call “eco-belief” among technology users can determine eco-attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral controls related to the life cycle process, thus shaping green user behavior. Also, eco-knowledge appears to be important in changing user\u27s attitudes and intentions to perform green behaviors. This study also revisited relevant green IT and green Information Systems (IS) literature and viewpoints while providing possible research directions based on its analysis results
Data aggregation, gathering and gossiping in duty-cycled multihop wireless sensor networks subject to physical interference
Data aggregation, gathering and gossiping are all vital communication tasks in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). When all networking devices are always active, scheduling algorithms for these communication tasks have been extensively investigated under both the protocol and physical interference models. However, wireless devices usually switch between the sleep state and the active state for the purpose of energy saving. A networking device with duty-cycled scenarios having sleep/awake cycles may need to transmit the message to all neighbors more than once. Taking the duty-cycled scenarios into consideration, communication scheduling algorithms for these tasks have been extensively investigated under the protocol interference model. As far as we know, scheduling algorithms for these communication tasks have not yet been investigated in WSNs with duty-cycled scenarios under the physical interference model. In this paper, we propose minimum latency scheduling algorithms for these communication tasks in duty-cycled WSNs under the physical interference model. Our innovative scheduling algorithms for both data gathering and gossiping achieve approximation ratios at most a constant time of |T|, where |T| is the length of a scheduling period. The approximation ratio of our proposed data aggregation scheduling algorithm is less than or equal to a constant times |T| with bounded maximum degree of the network
Global Hopf bifurcation and dynamics of a stage-structured model with delays for tick population
In this paper, we study a three-stage tick population model with three development delays. Using the total delay τ as the bifurcation parameter, we conduct local and global Hopf bifurcation analysis. Especially, we examine the onset and termination of Hopf bifurcations of periodic solutions from the unique positive equilibrium. We locate all of the stability switches for the equilibrium and demonstrate that the global Hopf bifurcation branches are bounded. This result implies the system undergoes oscillatory behavior only with bounded delays. The key step in the proof is the exclusion of 2τ-periodic solutions due to the negative Lozinskiĭ measure of the corresponding compound matrix. Numerical simulations are provided to show the complicated patterns of the tick population when the development delays are altered by the temperature and other environmental factors

The Use of Team-Based Learning to Improve Unit Test Scores of Adult Learners in Introduction to Programming Courses in a Small Southwest Georgia University
Low success rates in the introduction to programming course at a small southwest Georgia state university have led to a low retention rate in the computer science degree program. The instructional strategy used to teach the course could contribute to the low success rates of the students in the course. Andragogy, the adult learning theory, was used as the theoretical framework for this study. The purpose of this quantitative causal-comparative study was to determine if differences existed in the numerical unit test scores between students who took introduction to programming using a traditional lecture and lab-based class format and students who took introduction to programming using a team-based learning format. The participants included 52 students who took the introduction to programming course during Spring 2019 and Fall 2019. The students’ unit test scores were analyzed using a series of ANCOVAs. No statistically significant differences were found in the unit test scores between the students who took introduction to programming using a traditional lecture and lab-based format and the students who took introduction to programming using a team-based learning format. By introducing the students to team-based learning earlier in the introduction to programming course, students’ confidence in their ability to make decisions could increase, course withdrawal rates could decrease, and the students’ ability to work in teams could be improved
Comparative analysis reveals the expansion of mitochondrial DNA control region containing unusually high G-C tandem repeat arrays in Nasonia vitripennis
© 2020 Elsevier B.V. Insect mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) ranges from 14 to 19 kbp, and the size difference is attributed to the AT-rich control region. Jewel wasps have a parasitoid lifestyle, which may affect mitochondria function and evolution. We sequenced, assembled, and annotated mitochondrial genomes in Nasonia and outgroup species. Gene composition and order are conserved within Nasonia, but they differ from other parasitoids by two large inversion events that were not reported before. We observed a much higher substitution rate relative to the nuclear genome and mitochondrial introgression between N. giraulti and N. oneida, which is consistent with previous studies. Most strikingly, N. vitripennis mtDNA has an extremely long control region (7665 bp), containing twenty-nine 217 bp tandem repeats and can fold into a super-cruciform structure. In contrast to tandem repeats commonly found in other mitochondria, these high-copy repeats are highly conserved (98.7% sequence identity), much longer in length (approximately 8 Kb), extremely GC-rich (50.7%), and CpG-rich (percent CpG 19.4% vs. 1.1% in coding region), resulting in a 23 kbp mtDNA beyond the typical size range in insects. These N. vitripennis-specific mitochondrial repeats are not related to any known sequences in insect mitochondria. Their evolutionary origin and functional consequences warrant further investigations
A Case Study: An Examination of Historically Black Colleges and Universities\u27 Recruitment of Non - Black Students
This qualitative case study examined a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) recruitment practices that consolidated with Predominantly White Institutions (PWI) and the new HBCUs effort to increase non-Black students\u27 enrollment. The purpose of this study is to examine the institutional recruitment practices, recruiting practices that target non-Black students, and non-Black students\u27 perception of their recruitment experience. There is an extensive amount of literature regarding recruitment practices; however, literature regarding recruiting practices for non-Black at an HBCU is limited.
The study participants included three Admissions Recruiters, an Associate Director of Admissions, a Vice President for Enrollment Management, and twenty-three non-Black students at the Southeast HBCU. Interviews were conducted with the Admission Recruiters, Associate Director of Admissions, and the Vice President for Enrollment Management; a survey was conducted with the non-Black students who attended the HBCU. This study findings and implications indicate that more recruitment efforts are needed to target non-Black students at an HBCU. Also, recommendations for future research on non-Black students\u27 interests in attending HBCU, specific recruitment practices at HBCUs to target non-Black students, and Black students\u27 perception of diversifying HBCUs are discussed at the end of the study
