Supporting Students after a Concussion: School Administrators’ Perspectives
Students with a concussion may experience challenges when returning to school and completing schoolwork. Therefore, students may require temporary academic support throughout the recovery process. The purpose of this study was to examine school administrators’ perceptions of the return to school process and provision of academic adjustments (AA) after concussion. Online surveys were analyzed using a series of descriptive, chi-square, and Mann Whitney tests. School administrators strongly agreed a concussion can affect school performance and were supportive of providing AA for symptomatic students. More school administrators with access to an athletic trainer and who completed concussion training had an established team to monitor concussions and reported students had received AA after concussion. To better prepare school professionals and enhance the support for students after a concussion, school administrators can develop a school-based concussion team, organize in-service training on concussion, and identify pertinent school and district-based resources to facilitate this care
Implications for Instructional Coaching Using Mindset Theory and Multiplier Model
The role of an instructional coach varies slightly from location to location, but the commonalities of instructional coaching include job-embedded professional development that supports classroom-based, individualized partnerships of collaboration. In an effort to further investigate implications for instructional coaching using the multiplier model and mindset theory, a qualitative multicase study was conducted in an effort to answer the following questions: 1) How does receiving multiplier traits feedback when having an overall multiplier factor of greater than zero affect instructional coaches\u27 perspectives of their influence? 2) What commonalities and differences do the cases studied share within their responses to their Multipliers Self-Assessment results? 3) How does the mindset language the instructional coaches use within their preliminary question responses relate to their follow-up structured responses? 4) What is the relationship between how instructional coaches perceive feedback given to others and how they receive feedback themselves? This study took place in three phases. Phase 1 included preliminary open-response questions, the Multipliers Self-Assessment, and a follow-up reflection questionnaire. Within phase 2, any participant with an overall multiplier factor of greater than zero according to the results from the Multipliers Self-Assessment, were invited to participate in a focus group discussion. The seven participants involved with the focus group discussion became the focus of this study. From this population of seven, the instructional coaches with the highest, lowest, and median overall multiplier factor were asked to participate in one-on-one interviews. The purpose of this qualitative multi-case study was to explore instructional coaches’ experiences as they gained insight on their multiplier traits and shared their perspectives. The findings of this research revealed all seven of the instructional coaches studied were categorized as a talent magnet and/or a liberator. Secondly, throughout this study the instructional coaches’ focus shifted from how they could build capacity in the teachers they support to strengthening their leadership tendencies to foster the potential of the teachers. Next, this research revealed conflict within the participants’ perceptions of personal leadership tendencies or indications of their perceived expectations of the instructional coach role. Finally, this research revealed a strong desire from some of the instructional coaches studied for clear and precise feedback from their administrators

Exploring Elementary Pre - Service Teachers Technological Knowledge for Teaching Literacy: a Phenomenological Study
As a result of the fundamental changes to education due to COVID-19, this study focuses on the readiness of pre-service teachers to meet the literacy needs necessary in this technology mediated world by utilizing a theoretical framework that consists of a learning framework: Transformative Learning, a literacy framework: Multi literacies, and a technological framework: Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) to include the 2019 addition of another knowledge base: ConteXtual Knowledge (XK). It is this context component of TPACK that is so frequently overlooked that may encompass the cultural aspects of teaching and learning including the primary and secondary Discourses, the Frames of Reference, and the impact of culture on experiences was vital to the current study.
This study focuses on the cultural component of each of these frameworks to provide contextual knowledge about pre-service teacher experiences with teaching literacy remotely
Teachers’ Perceptions on Movement as a Teaching Tool
Purposeful movement integration adds movement into the content areas with the physical activity involving the content (for example, math stations that involve students moving around the room). For background on the topic, student benefits, teachers\u27 perspectives, constraints with movement, and teacher professional learning were researched. A quantitative study was conducted to investigate teachers’ change in perspectives and knowledge on purposeful movement intervention as well as increase the frequency of student movement experiences during and after a virtual professional development course. The results of a Hoteling’s T-Squared test concluded that there was a significant difference in the perceptions and knowledge of movement integration. Teachers scored higher on the posttest than the pretest. Also, a repeated measures ANOVA was conducted and found a statistical significance in the differences of the frequencies; each week the frequencies increased. The results suggest that participation in virtual professional learning increases teachers’ perceptions and knowledge as well as their frequency of movement integration in the classroom
Leadership Perceptions of STEAM Curriculum Implementation from Educational Leaders in an Elementary Setting
The purpose of this qualitative case study was to understand the perceptions of administrators toward the process of STEAM curriculum implementation using a curriculum change lens. The study centers on the qualitative data gathered through the views and experiences of principals who work toward addressing the needs of a future workforce through the STEAM method. Research questions included: (1) What are administrators\u27 perceptions of implementing the STEAM curriculum approach to instruction within an elementary school? (2) What are characteristics of administrators who have guided STEAM curriculum implementation? Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews with individual leaders, and artifacts. The gathering such information aided in providing a clearer illustration of the thoughts of administrators implementing STEAM curriculum
Positional differences in pre-season scrimmage performance of division i collegiate football players
This study aimed to describe the physical demands of American football players using novel performance analysis techniques. Heart rate (HR) and accelerometer-based activity levels were observed across two pre-season scrimmages in 23 Division I collegiate football players (age: 19 ± 1 y, height: 1.90 ± 0.06 m, weight: 116.2 ± 19.4 kg). Data were analyzed using a MATLAB program and inter-rater reproducibility assessed using inter-class correlations (ICC). Players were analyzed by side (offense/defense) and position (skill/non-skill). Performance variables assessed in bursts of activity included burst duration, HRmean and HRmax (bpm), and mean activity (vector magnitude units [vmu]). Exercise intensity was categorized as time spent in % HRmax in 5% increments. The burst duration (8.1±3.9 min, ICC = 0.72), HRmean (157 ± 12 bpm, ICC = 0.96) and mean activity (0.30 ± 0.05 vmu, ICC = 0.86) were reproducible. HRmean (p = 0.05) and HRmax (p = 0.001) were greater on defense. Offense spent more time at 65–70% HRmax (p = 0.01), 70–75% HRmax (p = 0.02) while defense spent more time 90–95% HRmax and ≥95% HRmax (p = 0.03). HRmean (p = 0.70) and HRpeak (p = 0.80) were not different between positions across both sides. Skilled players demonstrated greater mean activity (p = 0.02). The sport-specific analysis described HR and activity level in a reproducible manner. Automated methods of assessing HR may be useful in training and game time performance but ultimately provides support to coaching decision making
Nursing implementation of a validated agitation and sedation scale: An evaluation of its outcomes on ventilator days and ICU length of stay
Background: Intensive Care Units (ICU) often initiate mechanical ventilation (MV) in conjunction with sedation for patients who cannot maintain adequate oxygenation or ventilation on their own. Continuous use of sedation increases the likelihood of negative events associated with ventilators such as ventilator-associated pneumonia while, at the same time, continuing to increase the length of MV. OBJECTIVES: This study sought to analyze the effects of implementing a mandated Richmond Agitation and Sedation Scale (RASS) entry with each sedative scan on a unit where no parameters were in place to monitor sedation levels. Methods: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study which included chart-review of a Medical ICU. The data was gathered on ventilator days and sedation use for patients prior to and after the implementation of the RASS. Results: A median weighted analysis and Mann-Whitney U test of 138 pre-RASS ventilator patients and 86 post-RASS ventilator patients appears to indicate that implementation of the RASS resulted in a 31% decrease of ventilator days (p = .0002). The pulmonary diagnosis subgroup showed a significant 39% reduction in ICU length of stay (U = 324, p = .042). Conclusions: The results of this study lead to the conclusion that the implementation of the mandated RASS score entry limits over-sedation of ventilated patients, thereby reducing the number of MV days in the ICU. Sufficient evidence suggests that the mandated RASS entry also reduces the length of stay in the ICU
Impact of Prediabetes and Type-2 Diabetes on Outcomes in Patients with COVID-19
Introduction. The true impact of prediabetes and type-2 diabetes in patients with COVID-19 remains unknown, with studies thus far providing conflicting evidence. Methods. This is a single-center retrospective observational study involving 843 hospitalized patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Primary outcomes, mortality, and mechanical ventilation use were compared among the three groups: control, prediabetes, and type-2 diabetes. Binomial regression analysis was used to determine predictors of mortality and mechanical ventilation requirement. Results. Age was a significant predictor of mortality. On stratifying our patients based on their age, older patients aged 55 years and above had no difference in mortality or mechanical ventilation requirement among the three groups of control, prediabetes, and type-2 diabetes. However, among the younger population aged less than 55 years, patients with type-2 diabetes had significantly higher mortality as compared with patients in control and prediabetes groups (27% vs 12.5% vs 9%, p 0.025). Additionally, newly diagnosed type-2 diabetes patients demonstrated lower mortality rate in comparison to previously known type-2 diabetes patients (18% vs 40%, p 0.005). Outcomes in the prediabetes group were similar to that in the control group. Admission hyperglycemia was associated with higher mortality regardless of diabetes status. Conclusion. In older patients aged 55 years and above, status of type-2 diabetes does not influence their mortality. However, in younger patients aged less than 55 years, the presence of type-2 diabetes is an important driver of mortality. Newly diagnosed type-2 diabetes, in comparison with previously diagnosed type-2 diabetes, may have better survival. Presence of prediabetes did not affect outcomes in patients with COVID-19 infection
Retrieval of behavior trees using map-and-reduce technique
There has been an increased interest in the creation of AI social agents who possess complex behaviors that allow them to perform social interactions. Behavior trees provide a plan model execution that has been widely used to build complex behaviors for AI social agents. Behavior trees can be represented in the form of a memory structure known as cognitive scripts, which would allow them to evolve through further development over multiple exposure to repeated enactment of a particular behavior or similar ones. Behavior trees that share the same context will then be able to learn from each other resulting in new behavior trees with richer experience. The main challenge appears in the expensive cost of retrieving contextually similar behavior trees (scripts) from a repertoire of scripts to allow for that learning process to occur. This paper introduces a novel application of map-and-reduce technique to retrieve cognitive with low computational time and memory allocation. The paper focuses on the design of a corpus of cognitive scripts, as a knowledge engineering key challenge, and the application of map-and-reduce with semantic information to retrieve contextually similar cognitive scripts. The results are compared to other techniques used to retrieve cognitive scripts in the literature, such as Pharaoh which uses the least common parent (LCP) technique in its core. The results show that the map-and-reduce technique can be successfully used to retrieve cognitive scripts with high retrieval accuracy of 92.6%, in addition to being cost effective
