Microbursts in the Eastern United States and Their Predictability
Microbursts are thunderstorm outflows that impinge vertically onto the ground and then diverge horizontally. Although they represent less than 10% of severe wind reports across the eastern United States, microbursts are responsible for approximately 25% of severe wind damage (in U.S. dollars) in states east of the Rocky Mountains and represent a substantial percentage of reports in the upper tail of the severe wind speed distribution. This presentation will briefly discuss 1) the climatology of microbursts in the eastern half of the U.S. and 2) the predictability of microbursts in the Northeast U.S. using radar and lightning data. The total microburst reports in the eastern U.S. have remained relatively consistent in most regions since the turn of the 21st century. Some locations across the eastern U.S., including western Kentucky, central South Carolina, eastern New York, and southern Wisconsin, see substantially more microburst reports than the background rate; it is unclear whether this is due to increased local reporting by National Weather Service personnel or it is a natural phenomenon. Microbursts are most common during the summer afternoons, but there are some regional differences in the seasonal and diurnal timing of microburst activity. It appears that complex topography can have an influence both on the frequency and behavior of microbursts. In parts of New York and Pennsylvania, microbursts appear to be less predictable using peaks in radar parameters such as volume integrated liquid and echo top height. Peaks in lightning data previously found to shortly precede microburst activity in Alabama were not found to reliably predict microbursts in the Northeast U.S. It is hypothesized that the complex topography of the Northeast U.S. disrupts thunderstorm updrafts, producing less predictable patterns in radar and lightning parameters
Culturally Responsive Pedagogy: A Case Study in Georgia
This study explored the phenomenon of culturally responsive pedagogy to address the problem of limited data to inform best practices in facilitating high teacher self-efficacy with culturally responsive teaching practices. Using a qualitative exploratory case study design with an initial quantitative component, the perceptions of content-area middle school general education teachers regarding culturally responsive pedagogy in their classroom teaching practices were assessed and considered in respect to their reported perceptions of self-efficacy with culturally responsive teaching. The study’s quantitative component used the Teacher Self-Efficacy on Culturally Responsive Pedagogy Scale to assess the perceived self-efficacy with culturally responsive teaching of 150 content-area teachers from three southeastern Georgia middle schools. Scores were distributed across Quartiles 1, 2, 3, and 4 to facilitate the selection of eight teachers to participate in the case study component, consisting of a structured interview, card sorting, and artifact review. Data analysis for the qualitative component followed the interpretive thematic analysis procedure to review, summarize, and compare the case study findings to the existing literature to provide further insight into the relationships of effective implementation of culturally responsive practices, teacher perceived self-efficacy with culturally responsive practices, and administrative support for culturally responsive practices

The Applications of the Internet of things in the Medical Field
The Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm promises to make “things” include a more generic set of entities such as smart devices, sensors, human beings, and any other IoT objects to be accessible at anytime and anywhere. IoT varies widely in its applications, and one of its most beneficial uses is in the medical field. However, the large attack surface and vulnerabilities of IoT systems needs to be secured and protected. Security is a requirement for IoT systems in the medical field where the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) applies.
This work investigates various applications of IoT in healthcare and focuses on the security aspects of the two internet of medical things (IoMT) devices: the LifeWatch Mobile Cardiac Telemetry 3 Lead (MCT3L), and the remote patient monitoring system of the telehealth provider Vivify Health, as well as their implementations
Relationships Between and Student Perceptions of Self-efficacy, Growth Mindset, and Mathematics Identity of Adolescents in a Rural South Georgia Charter School
This mixed methods study investigated the relationships between the constructs of self-efficacy, growth mindset, and mathematics identity among middle school students at a South Georgia charter school. Constructivist grounded theory was used to investigate the strength of these constructs along with student perceptions of what factors make one a math person. The study was an explanatory sequential design consisting of an online survey followed by student interviews. Ninety-one students participated in the survey. Multiple linear regression was used to determine whether a correlation existed between the variables as well as among student subgroups. Self-efficacy was found to be a predictor of math identity for all subgroups except for students who were not white and students with below average math achievement. Growth mindset was found to be a predictor of self-efficacy for all subgroups except for students who were females, students who were not white and students with below average math achievement. Growth mindset was found to be a predictor of math identity for males. A MANOVA found no significant relationships between the student-level factors of gender, race, socio-economic status, or math achievement level and the dependent variable of self-efficacy, growth mindset, and math identity. Embedded sampling was used to select 30 students from the survey participants for one-on-one interviews to more deeply investigate student perceptions of these variables. Qualitative analysis found interest, content proficiency, and enjoyment of mathematics to be prominent factors in whether one is perceived as a math person for students of all levels of math identity
Exploring Misinformation Campaigns And How To Defend Against Them
Misinformation campaigns can have very real and lasting effects. Misinformation has been known to impact elections, create vaccine hesitancy, and increase polarization within societies. This paper reviewed existing literature regarding misinformation research, collected information from research participants to discern factors which may contribute to an increased susceptibility to misinformation, and examined Rule Based Training and a training program which utilized both rules and mindfulness to ascertain if these training programs might be effective in reducing participant susceptibility to misinformation

Lessons of Environmental Cooperation for the Workplace

Size Structure and Intraguild Interactions between Two Ambystoma Species
Intraguild interactions affect population and community structure through a combination of competition and predation. Changes in size structure influence intraguild interactions by affecting the strength and direction of these species’ interactions. I tested for size-structured intraguild interactions in temporary pond ecosystems between marbled salamanders (Ambystoma opacum) and tiger salamanders (Ambystoma tigrinum) using an outdoor mesocosm experiment. I hypothesized that 1) A. opacum survivorship and growth would be negatively impacted when both species start at a similar size because tiger salamanders grow faster and are more aggressive 2) A. tigrinum will grow slower and have lower survivorship when they occur with large A. opacum because A. opacum will outcompete A. tigrinum and prey upon them. There was no support for the second hypothesis, A. tigrinum grew and survived the same regardless of A. opacum size. However, I found support for the first hypothesis. Small A. opacum mortality was greatest when they occurred with small A. tigrinum suggesting changes in size structure resulting in these two species occurring together at similar sizes will negatively impact A. opacum populations through intraguild predation. Climate change will likely affect the distribution and abundance of species in temporary pond ecosystems and influence size-structured interactions that impact population and community structure
An Investigation into the Experiences of Secondary Social Studies Teachers Regarding a Change in State-Level Social Studies Standards in a Colorado School District
The researcher investigated the perceptions of secondary social studies teachers regarding the change in state - level social studies standards, especially in terms of their response in instructional practice. Furthermore, the study included a discussion of the factors that influence the actions of teachers related to the change in the social studies curriculum. This allowed for an analysis of potential changes in instructional decision making, such as including cooperative learning strategies, that were the result of the change in curriculum. The study is significant as changes in recommended instructional strategies have occurred in recent years. Additionally, research in the field of cooperative learning has primarily occurred in fields outside of secondary social studies to this point. The researcher investigated which, if any, perceptions held by teachers regarding the implementation of the new standards influence a teachers’ willingness to include cooperative learning strategies and 21st Century skill building in his or her practice. The theoretical framework for the study includes a heuristic investigation related to the implementation of a new curriculum and a teacher’s instructional practice. Using a qualitative research design, the researcher conducted concept mapping, semi-structured interviews with secondary social studies teachers, and a review of teachers’ lesson plans, to collect data regarding the teacher’s feelings toward implementing the new social studies curriculum and instructional practice. The collected data was coded to find recurring themes. The themes were utilized in comparison with the researcher’s own reflection on the implementation of new state-standards in instructional practice with commonalities in the experience of social studies teachers. The potential implications for this study include gaining a deeper understanding of the perceptions of teachers during the implementation of a new curriculum as well as factors that influence a teacher’s pedagogical practice.
