Teacher Perceptions of Social-Emotional Learning Program Implementation in Rural Georgia Middle Schools

    Get PDF
Social emotional learning (SEL) refers to a set of skills and competencies that allow students to effectively establish, develop and maintain interpersonal relationships with others, as well as to manage their intrapersonal feelings, emotions and responses to social situations. Students who receive SEL instruction have shown higher academic achievement levels and improved behavioral and social competence. Though an increasing demand is being placed on schools and teachers to address the social emotional needs of students, little guidance exists regarding implementation. Research indicates that teacher perceptions of SEL have a direct impact on the implementation of and outcomes associated with SEL. Furthermore, rural communities and schools face significant challenges in addressing the social emotional needs of students, due to limited resources as well as other factors. Middle school is a time that many students face social emotional challenges for a variety of reasons. This study sought to determine the extent of the impact of teacher perceptions on SEL implementation within rural middle schools in Georgia. The results of the study revealed that teacher perceptions significantly influence the successful implementation of SEL programs within rural middle schools in Georgia. Teachers that held positive attitudes towards SEL reported higher levels of implementation fidelity and student engagement with SEL activities. However, teachers reported struggles with implementation due to inadequate resources, time constraints and insufficient professional learning. These findings highlight the importance of prioritizing SEL, especially in rural communities where resources and support for students may be limited

The Parasocial Experiences of Twitch Streamers

    Get PDF
The literature surrounding parasocial relationships (PSRs) has been expansive but lacks the perspective of how parasocial relationships can impact the media figure in certain contexts, specifically in regard to Twitch livestreamers and their communities. Previous research has examined how PSRs fulfill certain roles in the individual’s life, as well as some aspects that affect the relationship, such as the strength and development of the relationship. Previous research has concluded that stronger PSRs can develop from livestreaming platforms such as Twitch. This study investigates the relationship between Twitch livestreamers and PSRs. Through semi-structured interviews with seven participants, this study finds the PSR can impact a livestreamers social life, well-being, and their career, as well as cognitive dissonance likely being another factor resulting from the relationship. This paper proposes a scale to measure the impacts of PSRs on media figures for further research in this area of research

What Does It Mean To Be A Human In The Age of Artificial Intelligence?

Campbell Eubanks’ artwork reflects ideas surrounding the ever-growing complexities of human nature in the context of our growing world. She uses ceramics to investigate human purpose in a digital world by employing artificial intelligence along with her own skills and craft. Her work aims to challenge viewers to contemplate the intricate relationship between humans and artificial intelligence. During her research, Eubanks has looked towards other artists who invite AI into their traditional practices. Sougwen Chung is one example of this. Chung has trained AI robots to learn her style and works alongside them in performances to create collaborative gestural drawings. This innovative approach has encouraged Eubanks to embrace the advancements of AI and to question the impact of collaborating with it. She is intrigued by the possibility of utilizing AI in her own artistic practice, while also examining the purpose of herself as an artist. Eubanks’ project includes three phases to better define the connection between humans and AI: collaboration, comparison, and distinction. While she has worked with multiple mediums, Eubanks finds that ceramics has been largely forgotten within artificial intelligence-generated content. Although three-dimensional printing has become more popular, most AI generators are used to create two-dimensional digital pieces. The work Eubanks creates explores the possibility of an intersection between ceramics and artificial intelligence. She is interested in combining the traditional and tactile nature of ceramics with the infinite possibilities of AI to create a body of work that questions each counterpart\u27s significance. Eubanks’ art allows viewers to confront their own biases and visualize a world educated with responsible usage of artificial intelligence. Although it teaches viewers how to sensibly integrate AI into everyday life, the work also embraces human-crafted qualities and emphasizes the irreplaceable role of the artist

    Get PDF
High school graduation is an important accomplishment not only for the graduates; but also, society. Whether students enter the workforce, armed services, or seek post-secondary studies at institutions of higher learning, the road to earning the coveted high school diploma can be an immense struggle for many. For decades, architects of educational reform movements have struggled to concoct the just right potion to ensure all students graduate college and/or career ready. Providing high school students an opportunity to participate in asynchronous credit recovery may be a close second to the silver bullet. This causal comparative quantitative research study examines the implications asynchronous credit recovery has on student achievement. A dependent sample t-test has been conducted to analyze pre and post-test scores to examine the impact of credit recovery on student achievement. Utilizing a two-tailed test, with an effect size of 5%, has permitted a 95% confidence interval to be obtained. Paired data from students enrolled in EOC American Literature, Biology, Algebra I, and United States History virtual credit recovery courses was utilized to conduct the data analysis. The researcher uses a dependent sample t-test to understand how virtual credit recovery changes the achievement scores for students enrolled in EOC content areas during the 2021- 2022 academic year in comparison to the 2022-2023 academic year

More Than Just Her Black Bottom: An Exploration and Analysis of the Legacy of Gertrude Ma Rainey

    Get PDF
The blues is a rich musical tradition based in the music styling of African Americans in the Deep South circa 1860. With origins in spirituals, work songs, and field hollers, the blues offers a glimpse into the lives and struggles of African Americans. One of the earliest pioneers in the blues was Columbus native, Gertrude Ma Rainey. Known as the Mother of Blues , Ma Rainey left an indelible mark on audiences she performed for and musicians she worked with. However, when she passed away in her hometown of Columbus, Georgia, a local newspaper obituary listed her occupation as a housekeeper, completely minimizing her prowess as a successful blues singer and businesswoman. It also misrepresents how much the city of Columbus cares about Rainey. Ma Rainey\u27s success is an incredible story that our community takes pride in, celebrating her with a museum and a school named after her. In reviewing the previous writings about Ma Rainey and her legacy, many historians tend to focus on the effect she had on other musicians during her life such as Blues Empress Bessie Smith or the ways in which her lyrics showcase aspects of feminism often not highlighted. There is a considerable lack of an updated, biographical look at Rainey\u27s legacy or one that highlights her impact on her hometown of Columbus. In my paper, I seek to remedy both issues. Using primary sources provided by the Columbus State University Archives and media/literature from when Rainey was alive as well as supplementary secondary sources. I have attempted to provide a view of her legacy as it evolved overtime, comparing and contrasting Rainey\u27s national legacy to her local legacy

Telling Your Stories with Data: Using Statistics to Create Statistical Narratives

    Get PDF
I am a cataloger and back in 2015 I needed to figure out a way to share our numbers in a relevant way to my library director. I have learned to use data to create statistical narratives and use those narratives in many ways to tell stories with data, use data for assessment, visualize data in a meaningful way to make important data-driven decisions and ultimately showcase the value of library work to library stakeholders. I started with cataloging data and in my current position at Columbus State University, as Head of Technical Services, I oversee managing all library-wide statistics, so I have had the opportunity to expand my knowledge and share even more data-driven stories from all areas of the library

Sacred Screens: Hinduism, Buddhism, Shintoism and Islam in Popular Culture

    Get PDF
Popular media content creators have routinely drawn from religious concepts when seeking inspiration for new material. Developers in the West have traditionally relied heavily on Christian themes to supply new ideas. Now, more artists have begun to look towards Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, and Shinto religions for inspiration when conceiving many of the storylines we find in mainstream entertainment today. This thesis will study key examples of film, video game, literary, and television media to show how these artists weave their religiously inspired themes into their respective platforms. In using the rich stories and traditions to develop more in-depth landscapes and compelling storylines, these religions benefit by having their values showcased in some of the most famous pop culture media today
