What Is the Write Choice? A Case Study of a Mid-Atlantic School District’s Theme-Reader Writing Program Through a Historically Responsive Literacy Framework

    No full text
College and career readiness is a topic that has become central to high schools around the United States (Kolluri & Tierney, 2020). College readiness standards from Common Core have been adopted by 41 states as of 2024 (education commission of the states, 2024); yet, across the United States, students are graduating high school unprepared for college writing expectations (Crank et al., 2019; Duncheon & Munoz, 2019; Duncheon & Tierney, 2014; Fanetti et al., 2010; Juzwik et al., 2006; Kolluri & Tierney, 2019; Kurlaender et al., 2019; Scott-Hicks, 2021; Wahleithner, 2020). College writing readiness is an understudied area of college readiness. The years of writing being assumed under reading in federal mandates and the remediation rates for college writing show that students need support to reach college writing readiness. The purpose of this single-site case study was to understand how two high schools in one Mid-Atlantic school district cultivate college and career-ready writers using a theme-reader program, and to what extent the theme-reader program can facilitate development of historically responsive literacy skills, identity, skills, intellect, and criticality. Data were collected from four teachers, two administrators, year-long syllabi, and quarterly course outlines. Findings indicate that individual mastery of specific writing skills are the foundation for creating college and career ready writers; and equity and inclusion must be prevalent in the curriculum. Further, this study offers research, practice, and policy recommendations to support high school students achieving college and career writing readiness

Mortalidad por cirrosis en Guatemala 2018: Patrones e inequidades

    No full text
This study seeks to analyze cirrhosis mortality in Guatemala in order to identify possible epidemiological criteria that guide the prioritization of public health actions. The risk of dying from cirrhosis in Guatemala shows marked inequalities by department, which are even more marked when compared by municipality. The risk of dying is higher in men, among the Mestizo and Ladino people, at low educational levels, and in people engaged in elementary occupations. Public health measures should be implemented aimed at municipalities and groups at highest risk of dying from cirrhosis. This study supplements available analyses produced by the Ministry of Health’s Epidemiological Department

From Gods to Google: How Religious Speech Cases May Fortify the Deregulatory First Amendment

The Court’s extraordinary solicitude for religious expression, manifested across a series of cases involving free exercise, free speech, and establishment clause principles, has been the subject of sustained scholarly attention. Much of that research has focused on evaluating whether the Court is drawing an appropriate balance between the rights of religious believers and government regulatory objectives. In this Article we observe that the Court’s most recent set of moves in this arena, which diverge considerably from decades of speech jurisprudence, will have ramifications that go well beyond the claims of conscience that have so animated the Court’s sympathies. The range of “speakers” protected by this expansive jurisprudence will include information technology companies that generate algorithms and artificial intelligence – speech producers with no conscience at all, much less the kind of sincere religious conviction that the Roberts Court has seen fit to protect against government regulation. As we demonstrate, the free expression principles the Court has developed for religious believers, when added to the Court’s expansive reading of free speech more generally, will make it exceedingly difficult to protect against the significant harms that these speech-producing technologies can cause – including to speakers and readers whom the Court might wish to enable regulators to protect

Betacyanins as Therapeutic Nutraceuticals in ALS and Clinical Analysis of Biomarkers in ALS Patient Samples

    No full text
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a multifactorial neurodegenerative disease characterized by oxidative stress, inflammation, and motor neuron (MN) death which results in muscular atrophy. It is a relatively rare disorder, with a global frequency of 1.59 per 100,000 person years (Ilieva et al., 2023). ALS is very heterogeneous, with different symptom manifestations in the prodromal stage and varying progression rates. About 90% of all cases are sporadic with an unknown etiology, making early diagnosis challenging. The survival prognosis for patients after symptom onset is 3 to 5 years, though about 10% of patients live 10 years or longer (Feldman et al., 2022; Ilieva et al., 2023; Provenzano et al., 2023). Dysregulation in cellular mechanisms such as autophagy, axonal transport, mitochondria homeostasis, and RNA metabolism, just to name a few, contribute to the development of disease pathology. Genetic mutations like SOD1 and C9ORF72 are observed in familial and sporadic cases of ALS. These mutations usually form aggregates of the misfolded proteins and induce oxidative stress and inflammation in the MN. Precisely, neuroinflammation and oxidation appear to be the common denominators of disease pathogenesis (De Vocht et al., 2023; Feldman et al, 2022). In this dissertation, therapeutic and pharmaceutical treatments for ALS are explored. On chapter two, a red dragon fruit extract is used for its phytochemical properties to treat the G93A mutant hSOD1 mouse model of ALS. This betacyanin-rich red dragon fruit proves to be beneficial, as it preserves MNs in the spinal cord and protects from muscle denervation. It also extends survival significantly and ameliorates astrogliosis in the spinal cord of this ALS mouse. On chapter three, we delved into the exploration of biomarkers and how they provide us with information about the disease state of patients. We measured different serum and CSF biomarkers to determine whether a drug had a beneficial effect in ALS patients. This pharmaceutical drug, the ROCK inhibitor Fasudil, reduces the concentration of NfL, a biomarker for neurodegeneration, in serum and CSF. It also lowers the concentrations of GFAP, an astrocytic marker, in a subset of the patients. Continuing the work of this Fasudil clinical trial, in chapter four we explored the isolation and purification of extracellular vesicles from CSF and plasma of Fasudil-treated ALS patients. The different populations of nanovesicles isolated from these patients’ biofluids were characterized through different validation methods; thus, confirming the presence of exosomes in our extracellular vesicle fractions. We used these exosome-enriched nanovesicles to measure target engagement of Fasudil. The work in this dissertation presents two alternative treatments for ALS. Both of them were effective and had beneficial effects on disease pathogenesis

Financialization and Price Volatility: An Empirical Analysis on Speculation in the Oil Market

    Get PDF
Financialization has facilitated the trade of futures contracts because of deregulatory policies increasing speculation. Speculation has created a more fragile market inducing riskier investments and aggravating price volatility. Three post-Keynesian theories, the financial instability hypothesis, money manager capitalism and markup, explain how policy altering the banking structure has developed financialization from lax regulation. Previous research has emphasized supply and demand as the main determinants of oil price changes, but it’s important to consider how structural changes from policy stimulating a more financialized economy has impacted volatility. With Brent Crude oil price data and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) open interest and trading volume data, we can use the speculative ratio, trade volume over open interest, to show the effects of speculation on oil price volatility from 1983-2015 using a Vector Autoregression (VAR) model with Impulse Response Functions. Ultimately, financialization has exacerbated oil price volatility and its implications

COVID 19 pandemic that started in February/March 2019, with happenings in Yuwan, China spread like a wildfire all over the world. All countries faced one of the worst economic challenges in recent centuries if not ever in the history of the mankind. Early predications were so severe and devastating that some forecasters predicted a death-toll of 100 million all over the world, as the virus was not only spreading fast but also had no solution for its serious fatal effects. It was evident that the patients were dying before getting any effective treatments and many of them were elderly individuals. Helpless world was looking around for devastation of human life that had second to none. All the medical revolution, pharmaceutical developments, advanced research techniques were unable to come up with any answer. Policy makers all over the world and especially in USA and India came up with the drastic solution of compulsory shut down of all economic activity in March and April of 2020. This paper will discuss two special cases, USA and India and observe more closely how policy steps were taken in these countries. More specifically we will analyze the fiscal and monetary policy actions in these years and compare the two economies. The paper is divided into three sections: Section 1 focuses on US economic activity in these four years and Section 2 does the same thing for India’s economy. In Section 3 conclusion is made that India’s conservative actions in relative sense have enabled her to manage crisis better. It is evident in 2023 that moderate policy actions can be more helpful for a faster recovery as seen by how India became a fast recovery nation in comparative sense
