Vladimir Putin’s Leadership Traits over 11 Years: A Longitudinal Study of Putin’s Third Term in Office Using Leadership Trait Analysis
While an abundance of literature has studied the actions and behaviors of Vladimir Putin, the most extensive area involves leadership analysis (Semenova and Winter 2020). Various methods within political psychology have used analyses to study Putin throughout his time in office. However, no published research has studied Putin using leadership trait analysis, nor have any published works studied his changes in leadership leading up to the invasion of Ukraine. Using a mixed methods longitudinal study design on Vladimir Putin from 2012 to 2023, five periods in his third term were identified, with speeches taken and coded using the seven LTA traits, resulting in a quantitative analysis. This analysis was then contextualized using psychobiographical methods to understand Putin’s leadership style and its evolution over time.
The findings of this study challenge much of the existing literature. Contrary to the widely proposed notion that Putin’s traits changed most between 2012 and 2014, particularly in the distrust and need for power indicators (Semenova and Winter 2020; Dyson and Parent 2018; Hill and Gaddy 2015), this analysis revealed a different narrative. The most significant shift in Putin’s leadership traits occurred in 2014 when six of the seven studied traits moved at least one standard deviation from the average. This period saw decreases in task focus, belief in the ability to control events, self-confidence, and need for power but increases in the indicators of in-group bias and conceptual complexity. These findings not only challenge the existing literature but also provide a fresh perspective on how Putin has adapted his pursuit of power, shifting his task focus from problem-solving to relationships to maintain political power (Semenova and Winter 2020). This analysis aims to broaden the field of literature to encompass more comprehensive assessments of Putin’s leadership traits over recent years while also deepening the understanding of the benefits and downsides of longitudinally studying a leader using LTA indicators
Finite Element Analysis of Thermal-Mechanical Instabilities in Nonmetallic Friction Composite Material
Thermal-mechanical instability (TMI) has been a research topic of interest as it focuses a lot on transportation systems. Thermal-mechanical instability was first noticed in railway and experimentally studied with a pin-to-pin or pin-to-surface setup of sliding contact. The topic has been extended into brakes and clutches which are two of the most common sliding systems most susceptible to thermal buckling and thermoelastic instability (TEI), where thermal buckling and thermoelastic instability are two sub-categories of thermal-mechanical instability. Thermal-mechanical instability is an ongoing research to better understand the phenomenon and the limits at which such instability occurs. This work delved into the thermal-mechanical instability in automotive systems (brakes and clutches), studying the point of occurrence of this instability.
Coupling analysis such as vibration coupled with thermal buckling and thermal buckling coupled with thermoelastic instability was performed. The idea behind the coupling studies was to find out if the temperature gradient alone can induce instability in brakes or clutches, or the occurrence of one TMI can cancel out or induce the occurrence of another TMI to reduce or increase the chance of failure.
It was found that vibration during braking can induce uneven temperature gradient and internal stress in brakes to increase the chance of thermal buckling to occur but the increase in gradient temperature does not induce vibration. Also, thermal buckling modes tend to induce vibration in brakes. Thermal buckling and thermoelastic instability induce the occurrence of one another. In instances of TEI which creates hotspots due to uneven contact surface area during sliding, which increases the thermally induced stress in the brake or clutch to cause thermal buckling.
Alternate non-metallic friction material and the effect of anisotropy in friction materials was also investigated to determine the limits of brakes and clutches at which thermal-mechanical instability can occur. Carbon-carbon silicon carbide as a replacement for metallic friction material proved to minimize the occurrence of thermal-mechanical instability in brakes and clutches. The arrangement of reinforced fiber in the composite material also affects the limit of thermal buckling and thermoelastic instability. A composite with randomly distributed reinforced fiber evenly distributes the internal stress better than uniformly aligned reinforced fibers and hence the randomly distributed composite used in brake and clutch production significantly increases the point of thermal buckling or thermoelastic instability to occur. The ideal composition for a carbon-carbon silicon carbide composite material with fiber aspect ratio of 1 to produce a clutch to withstand high temperatures without TMI occurring is 35% carbon fiber volume and 20% silicon carbide volume
Clinical Sharebacks of Survivor of Torture Treatment Progress: A Novel Therapeutic Intervention Approach
This paper investigated a novel therapeutic intervention approach of incorporating clinical feedback of psychological treatment progress with survivors of torture (SoT). In a SoT treatment program at the University of Denver, SoT clients were assessed throughout therapeutic treatment, and the clinical progress data was shared directly with the client in a feedback session, referred to as a clinical “Shareback.” While several treatment programs for torture survivors include pre and post treatment assessment measures of symptoms, there is little to no research on clinical programs for torture survivors that incorporate assessment feedback on treatment progress. Since assessment feedback has been minimally used and researched in the SoT population, this study piloted integrating feedback and meaningful ways to present and discuss assessment data visually and verbally, based on individual client needs. The current study examined the effectiveness and experience of clinical Sharebacks with an emphasis on informing trauma treatment approaches for SoT. Utilizing a sequential exploratory mixed methods approach, this study analyzed qualitative data from transcribed video recordings of clinical Sharebacks and quantitative data from SoT treatment progress measures. Results provide insight and direction into improving trauma treatment for SoT and integrating therapeutic assessment feedback into ongoing SoT treatment programs

Latine Psychology Specialty Program Development
According to the 2020 United States Census, the Latine community is the second largest ethnic represents 18.9% of the total United States population and is expected to grow to 28% by the year 2060 (U.S. Census Bureau, 2018). Despite this, the Latine community continues to be underserved and often underutilize behavioral health services (Blanco et al., 2007). For this reason, it is imperative that psychologists and other behavioral health providers have specialized training to best meet the community’s needs. The current literature fails to explore how Latine psychology concentrations are curated to train and inform future clinicians. This study examined existing Latine specialty programs within clinical and counseling psychology graduate schools to better understand how they were designed and implemented. The study used an online survey to explore the experiences of nine program directors and highlighted similar themes in curriculum, training opportunities, reflections, etc. This information is also used to provide recommendations for future graduate school training programs hoping to develop similar specialty areas
