Digital Dialogue: Emancipatory Dialogical Practices in Virtual Collaborative Problem-Based Learning
Get PDFSocietal shifts increasingly demand that people work across social and geographic borders, often virtually, to solve complex problems in the areas of education, environment, healthcare, poverty, technology innovation and ethics, and more. This collaboration requires critical and emancipatory dialogue and problem-solving.
This qualitative multiple case study examined two online professional studies graduate-level courses that employed collaborative problem-based learning to engage with social-justice related themes, one that explored inclusive educational practices, and one that explored the negotiation of global environmental treaties. The purpose of this study was to investigate how students engaged in emancipatory dialogical practices and determine the factors that influenced their ability to engage with one another and with the content in humanizing and emancipatory ways.
Paulo Freire’s (1970) writing on emancipatory dialogue as a transformative pedagogical practice served as a theoretical framework. Existing scholarship positions Paulo Freire’s principles, including engagement with generative themes, problem-posing, dialogue, and praxis as well-aligned with the philosophical underpinnings of collaborative problem-based learning (Armitage, 2013). This study set out to gather empirical data that would explore the nature of that connection in an online professional studies course, including the ways that students engage in dialogue with one another and gain insight into how teachers can support the practice of productive emancipatory dialogue that would orient students toward critical consciousness and praxis in their lives.
A qualitative cross-case analysis elucidated the characteristics of emancipatory dialogue as they played out in these two online courses, revealing insights into the way students engaged in generative theme exploration, problem-posing dialogical exchange, anti-dialogic exchange, and praxis. The findings also suggest internal and external factors that influence the degree and nature of liberatory group dialogue. Internal factors include community, accountability, evidence-based approach, and power balance, all of which support democratic group dynamics that foster dialogic exchange. External factors include instructor role, technology, scaffolding, and assignment design.
These findings indicate a promising association between collaborative problem-based learning methods and fostering emancipatory dialogical practices among students. The themes reveal insights that may support educators in making pedagogical decisions that maximize the value of these practices and enable students to engage in emancipatory praxis beyond the classroom
Comparing the Preparation of Youth Services Librarians to Their On-the-Ground Experiences: A Grounded Theory Study Incorporating Criticism and Connoisseurship
Get PDFThe purpose of this study was to better understand the on-the-ground preparation of youth services librarians, in contrast to their professional training in Master’s of Library Science (MLIS) programs. Classic Grounded Theory was the predominant methodology for this qualitative study, and elements of Criticism and Connoisseurship were also utilized. Document review, interviews, and journaling activities with ten participants were the primary methods of data collection. Key findings from this dissertation include a grounded theory explaining the current state of preparation for youth services librarianship, and multiple avenues for further study
Key Largo Mangrove Population Monitoring: A Remote Sensing Analysis and Classification Methodology Review
Get PDFMangrove forests are some of the world\u27s most bio-diverse habitats, providing essential services to the surrounding coasts. Removal of these habitats has a devastating impact on the ecosystems within them. The Florida Keys are some of the last areas in the United States with extensive mangrove populations. One specific area, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo, has been under state protection since 1959. For that reason, mangrove forest habitats there are less fragmented. This study uses remotely sensed imagery to quantify and analyze mangrove populations in this area using two methods: sub-pixel analysis and supervised classification. The results and steps of each classification were analyzed to provide a functional methodology for future research in the field
Impact of Dialogic Reading Intervention on Language and Literacy Development of Young Dual Language Learners
No full textThere is a pressing need for research on early language intervention for dual language learners (DLLs) at risk of developmental delays, especially young children who are non-Spanish speakers. Despite the projection that 62% of the nation\u27s children will be children of color by 2050, there is a significant research gap in this area (Lin et al., 2023). This study aims to fill this gap and recommend effective early language interventions for DLLs. The present study uses a single-case design to determine the impact of Dialogic Reading on vocabulary and alphabetical knowledge of preschoolers aged 36 to 60 months in English and their home language, Bengali, and their rate of cultural engagement. The findings of this multiple baseline design show that using culturally responsive texts during Dialogic Reading significantly impacts the preliteracy skills of all three participants, offering hope for effective early language interventions for DLLs. Dialogic Reading also increased their engagement rate, highlighting the value of the intervention in promoting cultural diversity. The study\u27s recommendations benefit policymakers, educators, educational psychologists, researchers, and parents in implementing culturally responsive strategies that help young DLLs at school and home
The Challenge of Regulating Pharmaceutical Clinical Trials in the 21st Century with a Focus on Guatemala
Get PDFThis report was prepared by the students and instructor of the Right to Health in Theory and Practice class taught in the fall of 2024 at the University of Denver. The report was prepared for the Vice Ministry of Health Regulation, Surveillance and Control of the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance of Guatemala. The work used the following guiding question: What can a country like Guatemala do to regulate international pharmaceutical clinical trials in the context of research commercialization? In other words, the work was guided by three important elements. First, the regulatory aspect of clinical trials. Second, a focus specifically on clinical trials that are carried out with several countries involved in them. And finally, the current trend towards the commercialization of scientific research. The report includes an extended summary in Spanish that presents the main background of the research topic, the methods we used for the work, the main findings of this documentary research, and some recommendations. The report also includes individual papers organized in three categories: ethics in medical research, ethics in health care, commercialization of medical research, and recent trends.
Este informe fue preparado por los estudiantes y el instructor de la clase “Derecho a la salud en teoría y práctica” impartida en el otoño de 2024 en la Universidad de Denver. El informe fue preparado para el Viceministerio de Regulación, Vigilancia y Control de la Salud, del Ministerio de Salud Pública y Asistencia Social de Guatemala. El trabajo utilizó la siguiente pregunta orientadora: ¿Qué puede hacer un país como Guatemala para regular los ensayos clínicos farmacéuticos internacionales en el contexto de la comercialización de la investigación? Es decir que el trabajo se orientó por tres elementos importantes. En primer lugar, el aspecto regulatorio de los ensayos clínicos. En segundo lugar, un enfoque específicamente en ensayos clínicos que se llevan a cabo con varios países involucrados en ellos. Y finalmente, la tendencia actual que existe a la comercialización de la investigación científica. En este resumen en castellano se presentan los antecedentes principales del tema de la investigación, los métodos que utilizamos para el trabajo, los principales hallazgos de esta investigación documental, y las recomendaciones que nos permitimos formular
Preemption: Opportunities and Obstacles for Climate Adaptation
Get PDFAs high-level warming becomes more common, it is critical for human society to respond effectively and forcefully to meet the many challenges coming our way. We have to be prepared for a 1.5- to 4-degrees Celsius (°C) increase in temperature.1 The scale of the coming change and the relatively short time frame in which it will occur both suggest that our society will need to respond in a highly coordinated and efficient way to best put our limited resources to work. This in turn will require all levels of government - local, state, regional, national, and international - to work in coordination toward achieving reasonable climate adaptation, for us to avoid the worst disruptions due to climate change. Preemption law can make a mess of all of this, as it has done in areas related to climate mitigation in recent years; but preemption done right can instead be a critical tool for effective climate adaptation
