Exploring the feasibility of collecting music and wellbeing data to examine intentional listening using a mobile-ESM application
This brief report describes a small-scale feasibility study investigating the use of mobile Experience Sampling Methodology (ESM) for collecting data on intentionality in music listening for well-being. Sixteen university students used the MuPsych app (Randall and Rickard, 2012) for a 2-week pilot study (resulting in 263 music listening episode responses), with seven participating in semi-structured follow-up interviews. Data was collected at baseline and then triggered by mobile music listening episodes at 0, 5 and 20 min. Baseline measures were of wellbeing; and listening episode data included music choice, purpose, context, and mood. After assigning listeners to languishing, moderate, or flourishing wellbeing categories, differences became apparent in participants’ experiences of listening to music. Several challenges to feasibility were experienced in self-selection and biased reporting by participants as well as technological limitations of data collection techniques. Recommendations for future ESM studies of everyday music listening are offered
A closer look at halal brand image: systematic review and future directions
Purpose - Halal brands are crucial in driving the growing global Islamic economy. Despite the importance of brand research and the rich brand literature, there has yet to be a comprehensive study of brand image across halal industries. This study aims to systematically review the existing literature on brand image in halal industries to provide a state-of-the-art understanding and identify opportunities in this research area.
Design/methodology/approach - Guided by the Scientific Procedures and Rationales for Systematic Literature Reviews protocol and the theories, contexts, characteristics and methods framework, this paper reviews 35 journal articles from the Scopus and Web of Science (WoS) databases that feature brand image as an underpinning theory in the context of halal economies.
Findings - Since the first study almost a decade ago in 2014, brand image research in halal industries has concentrated on consumers in the Islamic finance sector. Keyword co-occurrence analysis reveals that central research themes in halal brand image include outcomes of trust, satisfaction and loyalty. Most studies are focused on halal industries in Muslim countries. The cognitive operationalization of brand image remains dominant in halal industry studies. There is a lack of studies on the moderators of halal brand image. Several unique antecedents of halal brand image are uncovered in this review that are undetected in traditional brand image studies.
Research limitations/implications - The studies in this review are based on the Scopus and WoS databases, which may be perceived as a study limitation. This paper also only considered English journal articles and studies that focused on brand image in halal industries rather than general industries with Muslim consumers.
Practical implications - To become a global brand, halal brands must effectively build and communicate their brand image. This review provides managers with an appreciation of brand image across different halal industries and a strategic lens on universal drivers and those that are faith/ethics related. The consequences of an effective halal brand image can inform and motivate managerial decisions with multiple stakeholders in brand-building campaigns. Researchers can use the results of this review to guide future multidisciplinary studies and contribute toward the development of this research field.
Originality/value - To the best of the author’s knowledge, this paper is the first to comprehensively map the antecedents, dimensions, outcomes and moderators of brand image across halal industries. This study gives managers a strategic understanding of brand image across the halal economy. This review also develops a conceptual model that maps the halal brand image nomological network revealing three key antecedent categories of halal brand image. A research agenda on halal brand image with 18 future research recommendations is introduced to the literature

The future of utilising semiochemical pest control methods to manage the destructive crown-of-thorns starfish outbreaks on coral reefs
The Crown-of-Thorns Starfish (Acanthaster cf. solaris; CoTS) is arguably the most destructive non-human animal to coral reefs, significantly impeding coral survival in the face of the foremost effects of climate change and coral bleaching. Controlling the unprecedented number of CoTS outbreaks and damage on reef systems is vital for the survival of the reef ecosystem. The emergent strategy of using semiochemicals in terrestrial pest control management, due to their environmentally friendly nature, has generated interest in their application to control populations of this destructive species. However, there have been only a limited number of studies on promising semiochemical applications within aquatic systems. This Perspectives Review provides a much-needed outlook of CoTS chemosensory and semiochemical repertoire, how we might hypothetically utilise semiochemicals with regard to modifying CoTS behaviours and discusses future research directions and the scope for innovative semiochemical technologies with the aim of sustainably controlling CoTS populations, thereby mitigating their devastating outbreaks and destruction of coral reef systems
Exploring the potential of tiger milk mushroom (Lignosus rhinocerotis) crude extracts as immunostimulants for Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei): effects on survival and immunological responses against Vibrio parahaemolyticus
This study investigated the effects of tiger milk mushroom (Lignosus rhinocerotis) extract (LRE) on immune responses and resistance against the aquatic pathogen Vibrio parahaemolyticus in Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) to improve disease management in shrimp aquaculture. LREs were extracted using methanol and water to evaluate their cytotoxicity and antimicrobial efficacy. L. rhinocerotis methanol extract (LRME) exhibited higher antimicrobial activity and lower acute toxicity compared to the aqueous extract, and was selected for subsequent in vitro hemocyte assays and in vivo feeding trials. The in vivo trials were conducted in two batches, with each batch consisting of five diets: a basal diet without LRME inclusion (control), a commercial diet, and three treatment diets supplemented with LRME at 1 g (LRME1), 5 g (LRME5), and 10 g (LRME10) per kilogram of feed. Each diet had three replicates (n = 3). The first batch included 120 shrimp with an average weight of 13.38 ± 1.72 g, and was used to evaluate immune parameters, including total hemocyte count (THC), hemocyte type proportions, phenoloxidase (PO) activity, phagocytic activity, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, over a 12-day feeding trial. The second batch consisted of 225 post-larvae (PL10) with an average weight of 0.06 ± 0.01 g, and was used for bacterial challenge tests to assess survival rates following a 4-day feeding trial. In the 12-day feeding trial, shrimp fed with LRME showed significant increases in THC, ROS production, phagocytic, and PO activity, with LRME1 consistently demonstrating substantial improvements across multiple immune parameters. Days 4 and 8 were observed as specific time points when LRME exhibited significant effects on shrimp immunity, highlighting the temporal nature of shrimp immune responses to LRME supplementation. In a subsequent bacterial challenge test, a 4-day supplementation of LRME1 significantly enhanced shrimp survival rates. This study highlights the potential of LRME in enhancing shrimp immunity and resistance against V. parahaemolyticus, with significant effects observed at 1 g kg−1 dietary inclusion and a supplementation period of 4 days
Evolution of ore fluids in the magmatic-hydrothermal Pb-Zn metallogenic system: A case study from Narusongduo deposit in the Himalayan-Tibetan orogen
Most skarn-type Pb-Zn deposits have at least two alteration stages: an early prograde and a later retrograde. However, whether these stages were formed by a single pulse or multiple pulses of magmatic fluids remains unclear. The Narusongduo deposit, a large magmatic-hydrothermal Pb-Zn deposit in the Gangdese polymetallic belt of the Himalayan-Tibetan orogen, provides an ideal vehicle to answer this issue. Skarn- and cryptoexplosive breccia–type are two major types of mineralization in this deposit. Three hydrothermal stages are distinguished for the skarn-type ore: pre-ore stage with garnet, diopside, rhodonite, and wollastonite; syn-ore stage with actinolite, epidote, chlorite, quartz, calcite plus sulfides; and post-ore stage with quartz, calcite, and pyrite. Contrastingly, two stages—namely, the syn-ore stage with epidote-chlorite-sericite-quartz-calcite-sphalerite-galena, and the post-ore stage with quartz-calcite-tetrahedrite-tennantite-anglesite are found for the cryptoexplosive breccia–type ore. Primary fluid inclusions trapped in garnet from skarn-type ores have relatively higher homogenization temperatures of 430–440 °C, higher salinities of 42–43 wt% NaCl equivalent, and higher concentrations of Na (8.26 wt%), K (1.64 wt%), Pb (18,118 ppm), and Zn (11,196 ppm) than those in sphalerite and calcite (300–310 °C, 4–5 wt% NaCl equivalent, 1.27 wt%, 0.03 wt%, 649 ppm, and 664 ppm). Primary fluid inclusions trapped in sphalerite and quartz from cryptoexplosive breccia–type ores share similar temperature, salinity, and element compositions (300–310 °C, 4–5 wt% NaCl equivalent, 1.13 wt% Na, 0.04 wt% K, 705 ppm Pb, and 981 ppm Zn) with that in the same stage of the skarn-type ores. These microthermal and trace element data from single fluid inclusions point to the syn-ore fluid for the skarn-type ores being different from the pre-ore fluid for the same ore types but similar to the syn-ore stage of the cryptoexplosive breccia–type ores. This suggests magmatic fluid origins for the fluids from all stages in the deposit. Geochemical reaction path modeling of the pre-ore fluid from skarn-type ores predicted large amounts of skarn and alteration mineral precipitation with no Pb and Zn sulfides. Together with varying fluid inclusion compositions, we suggest that the pre-ore versus syn-ore stages are different pulses of hydrothermal fluids exsolved from a magma chamber. The magmatic-hydrothermal process should be as follows. The early supercritical fluid exsolved from the magma reservoir upwelling to ∼1.0 km under lithostatic conditions, separated into a hypersaline fluid and a low-salinity vapor, and produced the earliest skarn alteration. Subsequently, the second pulses of the supercritical fluid intersected the saturated vapor-pressure curve and boiled at the same depth of ∼1.0 km under hydrostatic conditions, resulting in the residual liquid with moderate to low temperature and low salinity and the formation of the skarn-type and cryptoexplosive breccia–type mineralization in different lithologies and structures. This work disclosed a two-stage pulse of fluids in the magmatic-hydrothermal Pb-Zn metallogenic system, indicating that maybe this kind of fluid involution is responsible for the formation of this kind of deposit
Navigating Island Life: Performing Musicians in the Francophone South Pacific
Music is intertwined with Pacific islander identities. The sounds of the Pacific are powerful and diverse. This diversity in music and musical traditions is evident when exploring the Francophone islands of New Caledonia, Vanuatu and French Polynesia. This chapter presents the results of a qualitative study which reviews the experiences of ten male contemporary musicians from the Francophone Pacific islands. By focusing our research on Francophone Pacific music, this chapter aims to address a significant gap in existing literature and enhance the visibility of Francophone Pacific communities and their music
Exploring Savico’s journey: dynamic capabilities and Industry 4.0 integration in organisation–industry actor relationships
Purpose - The purpose of the study is to enhance the extant empirical and conceptual understanding of Industry 4.0 (I4.0) adoption and its repercussions for an organisation operating in an emerging economy, considering the dynamic capabilities framework. The study investigates (1) the potential impact of the I4.0 phenomenon on relationships between organisations and industry actors, (2) the existing effects of I4.0 on these relationships and (3) the necessary measures for organisations to unlock the full potential of I4.0 in order to enhance and reinforce these relationships.
Design/methodology/approach - A qualitative method was used. Semi-structured, open-ended face-to-face and online interviews were conducted with 18 directors, managers and chief executive officers (CEOs) of Savico, a leading Vietnamese car dealership.
Findings - The analysis revealed various dimensions highlighting impacts on organisation–industry actor relationships. For instance, the “enhancing internal/external operations” dimension highlights the significance of benefitting the company’s close stakeholders through a centralised management system or more advanced functions, while the empowering-nimble outcomes dimension underlines the benefits of I4.0 in enabling performance-based choices and staff empowerment.
Practical implications - Technological phenomena such as the I4.0 regime require constant adaptive strategies, including knowledge acquisition and talent development. Thus, the study has implications for industry stakeholders, including companies, educational institutions and government agencies.
Originality/value - The study’s key value lies in proposing a model that provides conceptual depth into organisation–industry actor relationships. Furthermore, both the analysis and the model can guide researchers in future attempts to examine dynamic capabilities among firms operating in emerging economies, with important practical and theoretical implications
Effects of dietary synbiotic supplementation on digestive enzyme, total Vibrio count, and hepatopancreas of Pacific white shrimp, Penaeus vannamei challenged with Vibrio parahaemolyticus
This study evaluated the effects of dietary synbiotics on enhancing digestive enzymes, reducing the overall bacterial count of Vibrio, and minimizing hepatopancreatic histological damage caused by V. parahaemolyticus in shrimp (Penaeus vanamei). The experiments involved administering different treatments, namely Bacillus NP5 (SBM), Pseudoalteromonas piscicida1Ub (SPM), and Bacillus NP5 and P. piscicida 1Ub (SBPM), incombination with the prebiotic mannan oligosaccharide (MOS). This study was conducted for 60 days, followed by a challenge test with Vibrio parahaemolyticus for 7 days. The results of the experiments showed that dietary synbiotic supplementation demonstrated better digestive enzyme activity and histology of the hepatopancreas compared to controls (p < .05). After the challenge test, it was found that the damage to the hepatopancreatic tissue of shrimps was less severe and the total vibrio count was lower in the synbiotic treatment, indicating a protective effect compared to the positive controls (p < .05). In conclusion, the use of dietary synbiotics had the potential to enhance digestive enzyme function and provide disease protection for Penaeus vannamei shrimp
What next for tests of the situational model of Situational Action Theory? Recommendations from a systematic review
Situational Action Theory's (SAT) situational model is being increasingly applied to study rule-breaking behaviours. Given this rapidly growing interest, it is timely to review the state of empirical support for the model and identify conceptual and methodological challenges in order to guide future studies in more appropriate tests of the model. This paper systematically reviews 37 quantitative tests of SAT's situational model that were published during the 5 years from 2016 to 2020 to formulate and then answer the following research questions: (1) What samples and offences have been studied to investigate the situational propositions put forward by SAT, and what are the most needed kinds of studies and replications? (2) What is the state of empirical support for SAT's situational model? (3) What are the challenges and what improvements are required for future tests of SAT's situational model? and (4) What clarifications and refinements are a theoretical priority? Overall findings of the review highlight the utility of SAT's situational model in investigating a diversity of rule-breaking behaviours across a range of ages and countries. However, the review also makes clear that when reviewed as a whole, this literature encounters methodological pitfalls and theoretical imprecision. These limitations must be addressed as empirical tests of SAT's complex situational model become increasingly nuanced and highly specified. Thus, building on the findings of the systematic review, the paper explores these complex limitations and specifies the theoretical and methodological refinements required to advance the study of person-environment interaction in acts of rule-breaking
