The Effects of Hydration Status on Grip Strength

    No full text
Introduction: This study aimed to investigate the influence of hydration status on hand grip strength in a sample of the general population. Methods: Fourteen participants (4 males and 10 females) aged 18 and older, were recruited from the Loma Linda University area. Participants underwent multiple clinic visits, where they were randomly assigned to either optimal or suboptimal hydration conditions. Measurements included hand grip strength using a dynamometer, extracellular water ratio via bioimpedance analysis, and urine specific gravity. Results: There was no significant differences in hand grip strength, extracellular water ratio, or urine specific gravity between optimal and suboptimal hydration states. Results observed could have been due to variations in water intake, adherence and the short observation period. While the study offers valuable insights, cautious interpretation is warranted due to these limitations. Conclusion: Further research with stricter hydration control and longer durations may be necessary to comprehensively understand the interplay between hydration status and physical performance

Comparing Nurses’ Perceptions of Work Environment and Health by Ethnicity

A healthy work environment significantly affects nurse outcomes such as burnout and retention, but also physical and mental health-- for nurses as well as for the patients for whom they provide care. Black/African Americans (BAAs) face numerous and unique challenges from systemic discrimination that contribute to health-related disparities and numerous physical and psychological challenges. Given the inherent challenges BAAs face and the need for supportive work environment for nurses, this study examined how ethnicity was associated with perceptions of work environment and personal health, focusing on BAA nurses to identify specific challenges and areas for improvement. This cross-sectional, descriptive correlational study used the World Health Organization Healthy Workplace Model as a framework. Secondary data from the American Nurses Association’s Modified ANA Health Risk Assessment (ANA HRA-M), collected between 2017 to 2019, included 17,718 licensed nursing personnel across the United States. The Nurse Safety Scale was created with HNHN items to measure nurse perceptions of work environment. Other survey items assessed general health, demographics, and work-related factors. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, ANOVA, multiple linear and binary logistic regression. Findings indicated while BAA nurses had somewhat positive regard for their workplace overall, challenges with overwork, peer and patient aggression, and biological and psychosocial safety hazards existed. Additionally, BAA nurses reported more days affected by pain and poor physical or mental health than their White and Asian counterparts. Perception of safer work environment was linked to fewer days affected by these health issues; for each one-unit increase in the Nurse Safety Scale, nurses experienced 0.261 fewer days affected by pain and physical or mental health (p \u3c 0.001). White nurses were more likely to report better general health than BAA nurses (OR = 1.182, p = 0.051), although this was marginally significant. For each one-unit increase in the Nurse Safety Scale, the odds of reporting good to excellent health increased by 4.8% (p \u3c 0.001). These results highlight the need for targeted interventions to improve the work environment for BAA nurses, focusing on their safety and health

Effects of Intuitive Eating Principles and Magnesium Glycinate on Quality of Life, Body Satisfaction, and Stress in Early- and Middle-Aged Adults

    No full text
This study investigated the impact of combining Intuitive Eating (IE) principles with magnesium glycinate supplementation on adults aged 18 to 49. Participants were split into two groups: one practicing IE alone and another receiving magnesium supplementation alongside IE. Results showed significant improvements in body satisfaction, stress levels, and overall health among those receiving magnesium. Qualitative data indicated enhanced body awareness and well-being with IE. This suggests a promising synergy between IE and magnesium supplementation for better health and quality of life. However, further research with larger samples and longer durations is warranted

Assessment of Nutrition Knowledge and Implementation of Nutrition Education in Pilots

    No full text
This study assessed the effectiveness of a nutrition education program for Certificated Flight Instructors (CFIs). The program consisted of six video modules and briefs on various nutrition topics. Thirty-one CFIs participated in the study, and their nutrition knowledge was assessed before and after the program. The results showed a statistically significant increase in nutrition knowledge scores following the intervention (p \u3c .001). Participants also reported that the program helped them improve their dietary habits. These findings suggest that nutrition education can be an effective way to improve the health and well-being of CFIs and potentially other populations

Effect of Home Exercise Program on Visual Reliance for Balance in Older Adults

Background: Older adults tend to rely excessively on visual inputs to maintain their balance. This overreliance on visual inputs can increase the risk of falls, particularly when visual inputs are reduced or eliminated. This study aimed to determine the effects of a home exercise program (HEP) on visual reliance for balance and cervical active range of motion (AROM) among older adults. Patients/Materials and Methods: The study sample consisted of 19 older adults, aged 65-79 years old. Outcome measures included static balance, balance confidence, and cervical AROM. Participants were instructed to follow an 8-week HEP and were provided with behavioral modification instructions to maintain proper body posture during daily activities. Results: Participants experienced significant improvement in static balance (55.3±13.1 versus 46.0±17.8; p=0.033). Also, participants felt more confident in their balance following the intervention (85.1±11.8 versus 76.3±18.4, p=0.02). There were no significant changes in cervical AROM movements in self-selected and upright sitting position except for extension (32.6±11.7 versus 27.0±7.9; p=0.013); and (33.4±10.7 versus 27.9±11.0; p=0.023), respectively. p=0.720). Conclusion: HEPs, specifically designed to enhance cervical spine mobility and position, can potentially reduce risk of falls among older adults through decreasing visual reliance for balance and improving balance confidence

The Impact of Religion and Spirituality on Continental African Immigrant Health

This research study explores the impact of religious affiliation and spirituality on the acculturation and health outcomes of continental African immigrants in the USA. These immigrants, distinct from the broader African American or Black population, bring unique religious, spiritual, and cultural norms, profoundly influencing their health behaviors and acculturation processes. Unlike the descendants of Africans living outside the continent, referred to as the African diaspora, continental Africans are specifically those born in Africa. This research operationalizes the term \u27continental African\u27 to focus on this unique group residing in the USA, aiming to deepen understanding of their specific health needs and cultural contexts. The acculturation of continental African immigrants is significantly shaped by their deep-seated religiosity or spirituality, which often merges the secular with the sacred, challenging the separation of the material and divine. This blurred distinction influences their daily living and health outcomes as they navigate the stresses of acculturation, necessitating tailored health interventions. The profound religious and spiritual engagement of this group calls for a disaggregated approach in health data analysis, separating their data from the monolithic Black or African American health data to address health disparities effectively. Moreover, the principle of hypodescent or the one-drop rule, which categorizes individuals with any degree of African ancestry as Black, complicates the racial identity and health data analysis of mixed-race individuals. This research contends that such historical categorizations obscure the unique health profiles of continental African immigrants, who differ significantly from other Black subgroups in the USA, each with distinct health, social, and emotional needs. This research analyzed how religious beliefs and spirituality intersect with the acculturation and health behaviors of continental African immigrants, facilitating the creation of more effective health policies and interventions tailored to their specific contexts. By integrating epigenetics and a nuanced understanding of racial classification, this study seeks to contribute to the broader discourse on immigration, health equity, and the complexity of the Black experience in the USA. Keywords: acculturation, health outcomes, continental African immigrants, spirituality, religious affiliation, hypodescent, epigenetics, pastoral care, practical theology, USA

Spatial-Textural Study of Siliciclastics in a Navajo Sandstone Carbonate Lens

Flat-lying carbonate deposits in the Lower Jurassic Navajo Sandstone have long been interpreted as interdune lacustrine deposits. This dissertation critically assesses such inference through the study of an exceptionally well-preserved carbonate deposit in the Trough Canyon area, northwest of Moab, Utah. Thickness measurements along multiple cross-sectional exposures were used to construct an isopach map, approximating the original size and lenticular geometry of the deposit. Dip directions were recorded from foreset strata in cross-bed sets stratigraphically overlying the deposit to infer the approximately coeval direction of siliciclastic transport across the carbonate basin. These data sets yielded a contextual framework for studying the spatial distribution of detrital siliciclastics within the carbonate deposit. X-ray diffraction analysis of stratigraphically correlated carbonate samples measured wt% SiO2 as a proxy for the amount of detrital quartz sediment, yielding unexpectedly low levels of dispersed quartz content (0.8-11.4 wt% SiO2). Textural analysis of siliciclastic grains within carbonate samples was conducted using an AI-driven image analysis application and used to investigate spatial trends of Navajo siliciclastics within the carbonate basin, showing a general absence of strong directional trends in relation to mean, median, and maximum grain size. In addition, there was an absence of coarser grain sizes in carbonate samples compared to cross-bedded Navajo Sandstone samples, the presumed source of detrital sediment. Nearly all carbonate samples, including those closest to the upwind margins, bore grain sizes that exceeded the maximum threshold for significant eolian transport as identified from a literature review. This result raises questions about the proximity of dunes to “interdune” carbonate lenses in the Navajo Sandstone. The spatial distribution of siliciclastics according to composition and texture was unexpected for an interdune lacustrine environment dominated by eolian transport. Additionally, the surfaces bounding the carbonate deposit extend laterally into Navajo Sandstone sets, maintaining a flat geometry and preserving a thin draping of mudstone. It is suggested that instead of representing a deposit formed in an interdune depression by gravitational settling of lime mud and eolian siliciclastic input from nearby dunes, the lower carbonate deposit accumulated under sustained subaqueous flows onto a flat, expansive terrain
