Capstone Unit: 7th Grade Mathematics
This Capstone Unit, created during my student teaching experience, introduces probability at a seventh-grade level. Students are provided an overview of what probability is and how to calculate various problems, ranging from random experiments (flipping coins, rolling dice, picking marbles) to compound events to designing simulations to predict weather patterns! This unit used a variety of methods of instruction and manipulatives, and incorporated cross-disciplinary connections. My hope is that this unit serves as a good foundation for higher maths and opens awareness for possible career opportunities in their future
Promoting STEM Persistence: Impact of Research Experience for Undergraduates
With over a third of university STEM students dropping out of the major, an essential part of solving the leaky STEM pipeline is to improve persistence in the discipline, especially for underrepresented students. We will share the design and outcomes of a summer research program that ran with three cohorts of students during the summers of 2021, 2022, and 2024. The program was designed to improve the persistence of students from underrepresented backgrounds in the mathematics major and promote graduate study. The program was supported by the Mathematical Association of America with funding from the National Science Foundation
Leading with Cultural Intelligence: Fostering Inclusive and Equitable Learning Environments
As student populations grow increasingly diverse, educational leaders must develop Cultural Intelligence (CQ) to navigate cultural differences, foster equitable learning environments, and model inclusive practices for teachers and staff. By enhancing their CQ, leaders can implement policies and strategies that promote cultural competence, improve student outcomes, and prepare learners for success in a globalized world. This presentation will explore the critical role of CQ in educational leadership, offering practical insights on how academic leaders can cultivate culturally responsive schools that empower both students and educators
