The Traumatic Impact of Community Violence Exposure on Children: Perceptions and Experiences of School Mental Health Workers in Trinidad
This qualitative study explores the perceptions and experiences of school mental health personnel who support children living in communities with high levels of community violence in Trinidad. This study aims to gain insight into the type/s and frequency of community violence children are exposed to, the possible trauma symptoms observed, and the interventions used to respond to these children through the experiences of these school mental health workers. Eight school mental health workers (5 school social workers and three guidance counselors/officers) were interviewed via Zoom using semi-structured interviews. The audio recordings from the interviews were transcribed and are being analyzed using thematic analysis for this phenomenological study. The findings will inform future interventions and provide more information to inform intervention, practice, and policy
Modulation of Apoptotoic Proteins in Pancreatic Ductal Carcinoma PANC-1 Cells and Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma BxPC-3 Cells by Aqueous Extract of Chinese Medicinal Herbs Scutellaria barbata, Oldenlandia diffusa, and Bryophyllum pinnatum
Apoptosis is a controlled program cell death process that the body uses to combat cancer. PANC-1 is a pancreatic ductal carcinoma cell while BxPC-3 is a pancreatic adenocarcinoma cell. Scutellaria barbata (SB) has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for treating liver, lung, and rectal cancers. SB and Oldenlanida diffusa (OD) are included in most of the herbal cancer treatment formulas in Taiwan hospitals. Bryophyllum pinnatum (BP) is reported to have antioxidant, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and antitumor-promoting activities. We previously reported that aqueous extracts of these three herbs selectively induced apoptosis in these two pancreatic cancer cells. In this study, we used the Human Apoptosis Antibody Array - Membrane [43 Targets] Test (Abcam) to assess the effect of these herbs in the modulation of apoptotic protein on PANC-1 and BxPC-3. Our data showed SB, OD, and BP regulate the production of various apoptosis markers such as the pro-apoptotic proteins Bad, Bax, p27, and p53 as compared to the negative controls. Modulation of some anti-apoptotic proteins like Bcl-2, IGF-I, and p21 was also observed. These results suggest that these three herbs contain phytochemicals that induce apoptosis in pancreatic PANC-1 and BxPC-3 cancer cells via the modulation of various apoptotic protein productions. Further study of their specific modulation effects of apoptosis is warranted to reveal their potential chemopreventive and therapeutic properties against pancreatic cancer
Prediction of intensified ethanol fermentation of sugarcane using a deep learning soft sensor
Intensified ethanol fermentation produces higher ethanol concentrations while reducing water and energy requirements. Nevertheless, the inhibitory and detrimental effect of the cellular stress barriers in this process further complicates the non-linear dynamic relationship between the variables that directly reflect the fermentation quality. These key variables are hard to measure in real time and therefore cannot be directly controlled.This work presents the development of a soft sensor that predicts in real time the ethanol and substrate concentrations of an intensified fermentation. The soft sensor uses feedforward neural networks (FNN) with easily measurable process analytical technology (PAT) tools. The application of advanced PAT tools such as redox potential and capacitance, in addition to temperature and pH are explored as inputs variables. The complex kinetic relationship between the studied variables was captured with FNN architectures with a single hidden layer and between 95 and 175 hidden neurons for the different cases studied. Acceptable predictions are achieved for the concentration of ethanol and substrate in terms of RMSE and R2.The results confirm that the proposed soft sensor can accurately predict the ethanol and substrate concentrations. Collectively, capacitance, redox potential, temperature and pH provide a powerful platform of PAT tools that can directly infer key variables showing the fermentation quality in real time. This study provides a significant step towards the systematic development of a reliable soft sensor with integration of advanced PAT tools
COVID-19 Common Ground for the Vaccinated and the Unvaccinated: Scientific and Biblical Perspectives
God’s amazing grace prevents the destruction of humanity during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. God in His foreknowledge made a provision within the human body to defend us from viruses, bacteria, and harmful substances even before sin and disease entered the world. This machinery called the immune system produces specific antibodies to destroy antigens. To adapt to invaders such as the COVID-19 virus that the body has never encountered before, the immune system can generate countless new antibodies. It is estimated by researchers from Scripps Research Institute that the human body has the potential to make a quintillion, or one million trillion, unique antibodies that can bind to distinct antigens to destroy them. This concept of natural immunity created by God serves as a common ground of religious conviction for both the vaccinated and the unvaccinated groups. God built mechanisms in our body to fight the Covid-19 disease even before the appearance of the virus SARS CoV-2. However, sin has changed this course. This paper presents the current statistics for COVID-19 disease among the vaccinated and unvaccinated groups and provides Biblical and scientific perspectives of common grounds for both the vaccinated and unvaccinated groups along with the advantages and disadvantages
Religious Attitudes and Spiritual Well-Being: A Literature Review about Statistical and Contemporary Implications to University Students
Introduction and Problem: The influence of religious attitudes on health is a phenomenon resulting from factors such as lifestyle, social support, belief system, religious practices, ways of expressing stress, direction, and spiritual guidance. The purpose of this project is to verify through Literature Review academic works that have a statistical correlation between the variables of Religious Attitudes and Spiritual Well-Being. In addition, there is a discussion about the implications between university students, analyzing how faith, and religious attitudes, such as prayer, frequency to church, and reading the Bible, can significantly and positively affect well-being in spiritual and existential areas. The research method for this project is a literature review through databases including Proquest, Academic Search Complete (EBSCO), Sage Publications, @digitalcommon (Andrews University), and Dissertations and Theses. Further, articles and books use Google Scholar and James White Interlibrary Loan Service. Results: Research shows interaction and statistical regression between these two variables in the context of university students. Faith and health have a positive correlation in this environment
Classical Theism in John Wesley\u27s Sermons
This article examines John Wesley’s sermons in order to assess whether his doctrine of God may best be classified in terms of strict classical theism or modified classical theism. His view of God’s nature is informed by his inherited Anglican theology, which is blended with his evangelical proclivities. Of relevance to the inquiry into Wesley’s theism are several key concepts: (1) the interrelated divine attributes of omnipotence, omnipresence, and omniscience; (2) divine eternity in relation to human time; and (3) divine love. Wesley’s sermons that discuss omnipotence, omnipresence, and omniscience appear to align closely with classical theism. However, in contrast to classical theism, Wesley’s sermons dealing with eternity seem to indicate some form of divine temporality. His understanding of divine love and providence contains elements of reciprocity. Thus, when Wesley’s view of God’s attributes is coupled with Wesley’s understanding of divine eternity and divine love, they indicate a departure from strict classical theism toward modified classical theism
