Exploring enzymes: catalytic mechanism and biological function
Enzymes are critical for the biochemistry of life, as they make chemical reactions happen that could not otherwise occur. The Proteolysis Lab studies a family of enzymes that trims individual amino acids from the carboxy-terminal ends of peptides and proteins. This can be for the purpose of digestion, but is often to regulate the activity of important peptides and proteins. Currently we are exploring the mechanism and function of two such enzymes. Ecm14L is derived from the mushroom Agaricus bisporus. Its function is unknown, but it appears to function through a unique mechanism, in which a tyrosine plays the catalytic role of general base. Carboxypeptidase O (CPO) is an enzyme found in most vertebrates. Several lines of evidence suggest that CPO may be a folate hydrolase, including expression in immune cells, ability to cleave glutamate-extended folate, and activation by glutamate-extended folates. Results from these two lines of inquiry will lead to a deeper understanding of proteolytic function and diversity
A general predator-prey model with combined growth terms
The purpose of this research is to give sufficient conditions for the existence and uniqueness of positive solutions to a rather general type of elliptic system of the Dirichlet problem on a bounded domain. Also considered are the effects of perturbations on the coexistence state and uniqueness. These results yield an algebraically computable criterion for the positive coexistence of species of animals with predator-prey relation in many biological models

Have you noticed that in recent years, tensions amongst family members with opposing political views have increased? With the help of mainstream media, the rise of political (and sometimes controversial) giants such as Donald J. Trump, Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, and others further divided an already fractured America. Political tolerance within familial relationships have decreased over the years, with some relationships irrevocably broken due to polarizing views. This writing presents an explanation for the research approach that the researcher plans to use to measure the quality of family relations in terms of political ideologies. Due to polarizing views, some family members would rather sever relations as they see it as the morally right thing to do. Others resort to silence for fear of being labeled a racist or fascist by an intolerant family member.
The major research interest for this study was to discover the breadth of perceived political intolerance that family members have towards one another. Furthermore, this study seeks out the role that religious affiliation has with political tolerance amongst families. The researcher will employ the quantitative method and use the EFA (Exploratory Factor Analysis) steps to determine the political intolerance within familial relationships. This method will be used to gather data about varying subjects. The researcher employed the quantitative method and use the EFA (Exploratory Factor Analysis) steps to develop OEPS instrument with a total variance, 85.76%, p\u3c 0.01, KMO\u3e0.6 with a Principle Component and Varimax approach. The multiple regression with the stepwise approach showed that IV1 and supervisor IV2 are the two major factors contributing to the DV, p\u3c 0.001

Abstract (Italic)- Summarize the purpose of research, methodology and results.
The purpose of the research is aimed to discover the potential factors that contribute to a higher or lower perceived value of LGBTQ+ group for Andrew’s student. According to data validation, individual perspective has a total variance of 32.8%, 20.11% in work perspective and 16.7% in church perspective. Statistics from Chi-square analysis show 4 in degree of freedom and 26.8 in Chi-square test. Mean effect of independent variable gender measured across three subset finds out the mean for male in workplace has the highest mean value of 3.8 with 1.06 standard deviation and 5 being the highest perceived value over male in church and male at individual level. This research has drawn the conclusion that Andrew’s students have distinct acceptance rate in terms of LGBTQ+ in several aspects for instance individual perspective as a friend, at workplace co-worker employee relationship and church acceptance toward LGBTQ +. Y=0.018X1+0.002X2+-0.089X3+e regression formula illustrates the how political involvement affect the LGBTQ+ perceived value. In multivariate analysis research uses LGBTQ+ sexual orientation and residency area as two different independent variables to measure how many times they have been sexually harassed as well as therapy session they have taken. Besides, two-way ANOVA analysis discovers the correlation of faithfulness on religion and perceived value for LGBTQ+ by using spirituality and religion affiliation as independent variables whereas perceived value as dependent variable to measure how it impact perceive value. As a result, all the means across three subsets do not overlap due to P-value less than 0.05. Besides, pairwise comparison chart tells us divorced parent have -3.8 and -4.8 mean difference with the least differ -1.45 at upper bound and the most -6.147 at lower bound. Data is valid as P-value less than 0.05. It is evidenced that Christianity has positive correlation between spirituality and perceived vale indicating more spiritual Christians are the higher the perceive value toward LGBTQ+ whereas Muslim have demonstrated the inverse correlation. Furthermore, based on One-Way ANOVA analysis it could be deemed that perceived LGBTQ+ value varies depends on parent background including divorced parent, same sex parent and free-range parent. As result illustrates offspring from same sex parent and free-range parent tends to have higher perceived value toward LGBTQ+ as the mean is 4.8 higher than free-range 3.8 and divorced 1.5
An Epistemological Reading of 2nd Peter with Application to Truth and Information Warfare
In 2 Peter, the knowledge, practices, and dispositions of the faith community (2 Pet 1), contrasted with those of the false teachers (2 Pet 2), are applied to a truth warfare issue (2 Pet 3). Drawing from interdisciplinary conversations on information literacy, sociality, and philosophical argumentation, the theme developed in 2 Peter of “growing in knowledge” may be viewed as relational, performative, and consequential. This understanding equips the Christian disciple to “be not deceived” and to “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” (2 Pet 3:17-18)--both in the discernment and proclamation of truth. I propose this reading speaks to theological discourse, how those members of the learning community who pursue Biblical Theology engage one another. It does not attempt to evaluate hermeneutics. Instead, it guides how we, together as a community of faith, can effectively engage one another as we pursue the truth
Parental Barriers and Challenges of Raising Plant-Based Children in North America
Purpose: To identify the challenges parents face while raising plant-based (PB) children in North America. Design: Phenomenological qualitative study using semi-structured interviews established thematic barriers among PB parents. Setting: Parents raising children following a PB diet and residing in North America. Participants: 22 parents of PB children ages 0-17 participated in 19 ZOOM interviews. Phenomenon of interest: Challenges faced by parents raising their children PB. Analysis: Interviews analyzed with NVivo 12 using thematic analysis techniques. Results: Six parental perceived challenge themes identified: (1) extended family, (2) perceptions of others, (3) eating away from home, (4) access to convenience foods, (5) extra work and time, and (6) organic and specialty/convenience food prices. Although not perceived by most parents as challenges, (7) healthcare provider concern based in lack of education and (8) lack of resources provided were themes encountered while raising PB children. Conclusions and Implications: Provides understanding of parental experiences while raising PB children and highlights the challenges faced. Further studies needed to determine distinct barriers, interventions, support, and resources that would decrease challenges to raising PB children and ensure their health while supporting parents
Adverse Childhood Experience (ACES) in Seminary Students: 4 Years of Data
Every Fall Semester since 2019, during their first semester in seminary, seminarians have been invited to take the Expanded ACE survey. This survey consists of the original ten ACEs proposed by Dr. Vincent Felitti and his team at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in San Diego, CA, the architects of the ACE study in the mid-1980s. This study showed that when participants had one of more ACEs, the probability of their experiencing chronic health problems, mental health issues such as depression and anxiety, and self-destructive behaviors such as drinking, smoking, overeating, etc., increased compared with those who had no ACEs. In addition to the original ten ACEs, we added additional ACEs that were not in Felitti’s groundbreaking study. These included spiritual abuse, performance orientation, conditional love, and neighborhood violence to name a few. This presentation will share the initial results of the four years of data collection which includes findings from over 600 students. I will also share plans for the follow-up studies and the vision for creating trauma-informed churches in the Seventh-day Adventist Church
The Effect of Sleep Deprivation on Academic Performance Among Graduate Students
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of sleep deprivation on academic performance among graduate students. The participants represented 195 seminary students. Sleep deprivation was measured by sleep duration \u3c 7 hours, while academic performance was measured by GPA level on a 4.0 scale. Data collected through written and electronic surveys, included among the list of questions a validated screening tool known as the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS). Independent Sample T-Test, a Pearson’s correlation test, and a one-way ANOVA compared academic performances between groups of independent variables and to determine the correlation between sleepiness and GPA. SPSS version 27 was used to analyze the data. The Independent Sample T-Test results revealed sleep deprived students performed significantly lower when compared to their peers who were not sleep deprived, (t (175.454) = -4.170, p \u3c .001). Furthermore, the Pearson’s correlation test showed a positive correlation between sleep and academic performance. (r = .295, p \u3c .001), and the one-way ANOVA test showed a difference in GPA level between the five ethnic groups that was statistically significant (f 4,168 = 3.826, p \u3c .05). Sleep deprivation not only impacts physical health, cognitive performance, but it also impacts student’s GPA level
Bridging Religious and Cultural Gaps in Public Health Through Successful Educational Partnerships with the Pokagon Band Native Americans
In Michigan, only 14.2 percent of Native Americans or Alaska Natives who are 25 years of age or older have received a bachelor’s degree, compared to the statewide average of 28.1 percent. Andrews University in partnership with Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians, seeks to improve Native American student outcomes under the new initiatives of the Title III grant by the U.S. Department of Education. This is achieved by combining the strengths and resources of Andrews University and the Pokagon Band. Andrews University learns how to best accommodate Native American students and their families through careful listening. Several factors have surfaced that are important. Some of these include trust, respect, kindness, and health. Health impacts all people regardless of race or culture. Faith-based institutions spend more time in health and healing than preaching. In this initiative, Andrews University will offer college-level courses in public health, English, stress management, and substance abuse in addition to others to the Band. The challenge in this partnership is moving away from the ideology of “Americanizing the Native Indian and Saving the Man.” The solution is not to change the Native Indian but to recognize their potential and offer them the opportunities and privileges to thrive
Guns in School
My poster discusses the pro’s and con’s of having firearms present on school properties, whether it is in the form of safety officers or allowing faculty to carry them. My poster shows the research on both sides and why they believe they are right, along with my personal stance when it comes to the issue as well. My research also includes a graphic regarding the statistics of where the incidences occurred and why they happened
