    Seasonal and diurnal variations of Kelvin-Helmholtz Instability at terrestrial magnetopause

    Kelvin-Helmholtz Instability is ubiquitous at Earth’s magnetopause and plays an important role in plasma entry into the magnetosphere during northward interplanetary magnetic fields. Here, using one solar cycle of data from NASA THEMIS (Time History of Events and Macro scale Interactions during Substorms) and MMS (Magnetospheric Multiscale) missions, we found that KHI occurrence rates show seasonal and diurnal variations with the rate being high near the equinoxes and low near the solstices. The instability depends directly on the Earth’s dipole tilt angle. The tilt toward or away from the Sun explains most of the seasonal and diurnal variations, while the tilt in the plane perpendicular to the Earth‐Sun line explains the difference between the equinoxes. The results reveal the critical role of dipole tilt in modulating KHI across the magnetopause as a function of time, highlighting the importance of Sun-Earth geometry for solar wind-magnetosphere interaction and for space weather

    When the master’s tools fail: Racial euphemism in Shakespeare appropriation, or, the activist value of Premodern Critical Race Studies

    As premodern studies continues to develop tools for anti-racist scholarship and pedagogy, this essay establishes the stakes of adaptation/appropriation studies especially committing to these efforts. Turning to the novel The Serpent of Venice, I demonstrate how appropriations that engage with race too often employ what I frame as racial euphemism: palliative engagements with race that sidestep questions of power and inequity. This is especially true for those attempting to maintain distance between Shakespeare and questions of race, and especially racism, often under the guise of historical accuracy. This racially euphemistic approach, therefore, disseminates to especially wide audiences white supremacist approaches to race. Premodern Critical Race Studies provides a vital activist framework, and with it, important conceptual and methodological tools, that help adaptation/appropriation scholars identify racial euphemism in premodern retellings, while at the same time offering appropriators scholarship that can help them craft anti-racist appropriations that resist the idea of a race-neutral past

    A digital health program for treatment of urinary incontinence: retrospective review of real-world user data

    Introduction and hypothesis: To determine the effectiveness of a prescription digital therapeutic (pDTx) in reducing urinary incontinence (UI) symptoms in real-world users. Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study of real-world data from users of a pDTx designed to guide pelvic floor muscle training(PFMT) between July 1, 2020–December 31, 2021. The primary outcome was UI symptom change as reported via in-app Urogenital Distress Inventory (UDI-6). Included subjects were female, ≥ 18 years with a diagnosis of stress, urgency, or mixed UI who completed the UDI-6 at baseline and 8 weeks. Demographic, symptom, and adherence data were summarized. Paired t-test and Wilcoxon signed rank test were used to analyze change in outcomes from baseline to 8 weeks across adherence and UI diagnosis groups. Results: Of 532 women with UI, 265 (50%) met criteria and were included in the analysis. Mean age was 51.2 ± 11.5 years (range 22–84, N = 265). Mean body mass index (BMI) was 27.3 ± 6.2 kg/m2 (range 15.2–46.9, N = 147). Most participants had stress UI (59%) followed by mixed UI (22%), urgency UI/OAB (11%), and unspecified UI (8%). UDI-6 scores improved by 13.90 ± 15.53 (p ≤ 0.001); 62% met or exceeded MCID. Device-reported PFMT adherence was 72% at 4 weeks and 66% at 8 weeks (100% = 14 uses/week). Participants in each diagnosis category reported significant improvement on UDI-6 score from baseline to 8 weeks. No association between UDI-6 score improvement and adherence category, age, BMI, or UI subtype was identified. Conclusions: This study demonstrates effectiveness of a pDTx in reducing UI symptoms in a real-world setting. Users achieved statistically and clinically significant symptom improvement over an 8-week period

    Periodicities and Plasma Density Structure of Jupiter\u27s Dawnside Magnetosphere

    Ability to quantify variations in magnetic field topology and density within Jupiter\u27s magnetosphere is an important step in understanding the overall structure and dynamics. The Juno spacecraft has provided a rich data set in the dawnside magnetosphere. The recent Grid Agnostic MHD for Extended Research Applications (GAMERA) global simulation study by Zhang et al. (2021, https://doi.org/10.1126/sciadv.abd1204) showed a highly structured plasmadisc with closed magnetic field lines mapped between the outer dawn-tail flank and the high-latitude polar region. To test these model predictions, we examined Juno\u27s magnetic field data and electron/energetic particle data to categorize portions of orbits 1–15 into one of three regions based on plasma confinement: the flux pileup region, the intermediate region, and the plasmadisc region. For each region we examined periodicities from magnetic field fluctuations and particle density fluctuations on the 1–10 hr time scale. Periodicities on this time scale could relate to internal (e.g., plasmadisc structure) or external processes (e.g., Kelvin-Helmholtz vortices). Similar analysis was performed on the GAMERA simulation with the data split into two regions, an outer (150 \u3e R \u3e 60) region and an inner (R \u3c 60) region. Finally, using published density moments from Huscher et al. (2021, https://doi.org/10.1029/2021JA029446), we compared the relative density variations of the Juno moments and the GAMERA simulation to further understand the overall structure and dynamics of the plasmadisc.     Using Tonga Proverbs in Presenting Biblical Concepts

    The Tonga tribe, located in the Southern part of Zambia, is rich in cultural communication. The Tonga people often use proverbs to communicate important ideas with each other, to solve problems among themselves, during common conversations, and when teaching Tonga children. They also are proud that their proverbs are a source of wisdom, with every phase of life having important proverbs attached to them. The Tongas have more than 500 proverbs, however, in this article I will only look at some of them to illustrate how they could be used in presenting biblical principles in the Tonga cultural setting. This article looks at the historical background of the Tonga people, their origin, the establishment of Christianity among them, their worldview, and suggests ways of presenting Bible teachings using Tonga proverbs. The article concludes with some recommendations and conclusions
