WORKING THROUGH TRAUMA: THE USE OF COMFORT DOGS IN TELEVISION NEWSROOMS
Get PDFJournalists who have to cover traumatic events are exposed to the potential of having lasting psychological effects. This study explored one of the coping options that could be made available to more journalists through the use of comfort dogs. While journalists often are guarded with their emotions, that does not mean they do not experience the symptoms of Acute Stress Disorder and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. This qualitative study focused on long-form interviews with broadcast journalists who covered the Pulse nightclub mass shooting in June of 2016. These journalists all had subsequent interaction with comfort dogs in the newsroom. The findings showed that the journalists who interacted with the dogs felt a sense of joy and relief, bringing a much needed distraction to a difficult week of news coverage. Others found that while the dogs were helpful, they were not enough to correct the emotionally unhealthy environment often found in newsrooms. In addition, the findings show that the dogs provided a catalyst for the journalists to be more vulnerable, therefore potentially opening the door for other mental healthcare options within newsrooms during traumatic news coverage
TEACHERS\u27 IMPLEMENTATION AND APPLICATION OF SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING TRAINING IN THE CLASSROOM
Get PDFSocial-emotional learning (SEL) has become a part of education to enhance learning by catering to students\u27 personal and social advancement. Unlike many other districts, this local district has pushed for a more unified process to implement SEL in the classrooms. The implementation of SEL varies from one district to another. However, a factor to SEL\u27s successful implementation is adequate training for classroom teachers. Another factor that affects its implementation is the perception with which classroom teachers apply the concepts acquired from the training. The research data highlights the benefits of SEL effectively implemented at the classroom level. Classroom teachers are the first line of contact with students, and their perception of SEL in the classroom should be valued. The purpose of this quantitative non-experimental study was to evaluate elementary teachers\u27 implementation and application in the classroom of the school district\u27s SEL curriculum and to assess teacher confidence in the program. Classroom teachers (n = 201) responded to an electronic survey measuring their perception of SEL training concepts. Findings revealed there was a significant difference in perceptions between teachers who apply SEL training concepts in the classroom and those who did not. Additionally, teachers who had a positive perception of the concepts learned in district training sessions reported a higher perception of preparedness for SEL implementation in the classroo

Still, many book covers in the young adult fiction market are ineffective at reaching their target audience. Since the birth of young adult books, cover design styles have changed drastically, yet little research has been done. Because of this lack of research, two new surveys were built to investigate what specific elements and styles of current young adult book covers appeal to readers. One survey was for readers, and one survey was for professionals working in the publishing industry. Results showed that book cover design appeal is subjective, as results were reasonably balanced across different design elements and styles
Cardiovascular Health Intervention in Firefighters

Risk factors for a fatal cardiovascular event and cardiovascular health disease (CVD) are obesity, sleep deprivation, weight gain, lack of exercise, unhealthy diet, etc. The research in this thesis lays out the poor association between cardiovascular health and firefighters. Interventional programs that aim to improve the cardiovascular health of firefighters must be implemented universally to all fire departments by the International Association of Firefighters. Pertinent information collected on the cardiovascular health of surveyed firefighters of Hernando County was paradoxical. While most of the surveyed firefighters identified themselves as in optimal cardiovascular health, the collected data stated otherwise
AN EVALUATION OF STUDENT PERCEPTIONS OF CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT FACTORS IN FACCS SCHOOLS
Get PDFThe purpose of the study was to evaluate Florida Association of Christian Colleges and Schools (FACCS) high school student perceptions of the relationship between ideal and real classroom environments. The quantitative, non-experimental research design with a survey was used to understand students\u27 overall perceptions of attending five Christian schools and how they perceived the classroom environments. Student perceptions of their classroom environment are a topic of essential importance to the Christian school. The data provided vital insight using nine dimensions measured using a standardized tool, the Classroom Environment Scale (CES), developed by Edison Trickett and Rudolf Moos. Dimensions in the tool included relationship, task orientation, student competition, teacher order and organization, classroom rule clarity, teacher classroom management, innovation, teacher support, and teacher involvement. The data presented significance between the student perceptions of the ideal and real classroom environments regarding teacher support and teacher involvement in FACCS schools. The study contributes important information for administrators and teachers of FACCS Christian schools to improve teacher support and involvement and continue providing excellence in the other dimensions where students felt satisfaction

Catholicism emphasizes the divinity of scriptures that the early church fathers almost universally disbelieved. Protestantism held that the Canon put forward by Calvin was entirely equal in its truth and that it should not be changed even in the face of changing beliefs or new discoveries. However, just because a Canon has been altered or closed in a doubtful way, that does not mean it is wrong or that the Holy Spirit did not influence it. Things change, things are discovered, and people need to be ready to accept truth even if it is not what they have been taught

Get PDFLive music performance, specifically in a contemporary and modem atmosphere, such as in pop, rock, and hip-hop musical genres in a corporate concert environment, is constantly innovating. As technology advances, so does its incorporation into live performance, marketing media, and digital music. Over the course of centuries, music listeners have enjoyed music of various genres through numerous types of media; however, what remains consistent in these avenues of musical exposure is the psychology of those listeners. This thesis aims to observe what consumers of music look for in live concert and digital music streaming environments, how performers have adapted and can continue to adapt to the needs of listeners over time, and technology\u27s impact, such as through the introduction of digital music streaming platforms, on the presence of live contemporary music performances. A study, inspired by research conducted by Dr. Steven Caldwell Brown and Dr. Don Knox, was conducted regarding the digital music streaming and concert attending habits of listeners, as a means of better understanding the music listening preferences amongst college-aged students. One-hundred six students of a private Christian university participated. The results of this study implied the overwhelming popularity of streaming music and that prior concert experience would likely cause an increase in music consumption
