Paideia serves as a cornerstone for an education recognizing eternal persons, and normative standards enable students to wield their swords of knowledge for eternal purposes. Additionally, parents can seek to foster the imagination as a mirror reflecting an eternal perspective in education. When pursuing such an education, parents must be aware of the risks of classical education and begin with their own transformative experience with Jesus. AN EVALUATION OF THE EFFECTS OF STUDENT PARTICIPATION IN HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETICS AND GRADE POINT AVERAGES IN A RURAL TITLE I SCHOOL DISTRICT
Get PDFThe purpose of this non-experimental, quantitative, associative/predictive study was to evaluate the relationship between participation in high school athletics and grade point averages (GPAs) for graduated cohorts in a rural Title I school district. Study data were collected in archival form from three graduating cohorts of students from a rural Title I school district in Florida. Study findings indicated that senior students who were identified as student-athletes had a mean GPA that was significantly higher than students who were identified as non-athletes. Furthermore, when considering the effect of GPAs by gender, both female and male student-athlete GPAs were statistically higher than their non-athlete counterparts, with female student-athlete GPAs being marginally greater. Additionally, the findings of an ancillary analysis confirmed the predicted likelihood of high school graduation among student-athletes from a rural Title I school district increased the odds of graduating by approximately 3726% as compared to non-athlete students. For rural Title I school district administrators, this study’s findings provide evidence that supports the promotion of school-based athletics as a possible intervention to improve student GPAs and graduation rates

Retrieving some of the principles and practices of Methodism for the Pentecostal church offers a method of discipleship that aids disciples in developing a sensitivity and closeness to the leading of the Holy Spirit. Get PDFChurch conflict is increasingly at the forefront of denominations as they suffer internal and external conflict. The need to develop a better perspective and manage relationships in church conflict may depend on the church’s theology. The research of this project seeks to establish a pneumatological theology in dialogue with family systems theory and Christological philosophy of church conflict. The theology of church conflict is divided into four sections: reason, experience, history, and scripture. The Christological philosophy centers on Jesus’ conflicts as every passage in the book of Luke is examined through the lens of conflict. A contextually transferrable Spirit-empowered theology and Christological philosophy of church conflict may benefit those in the pastorate who often deal with congregational conflict and the perspective they carry while managing conflict. Pastors who had attended a seminar in which the theology and philosophy were taught were surveyed. An evaluation was made to assess if the theology and philosophy of church conflict help change the perspectives of church conflict in pastors as they experience conflict in their local congregations and ministries. SINGING AWAY THE PAIN: HOW EMO GAVE KIDS A VOICE
Get PDFIn 2008, The Daily Mail, a British tabloid, ran an article blaming “emo” music and subculture, more specifically the band My Chemical Romance, for the suicide of a 13 year old girl named Hannah Bond. For the sake of definition, emo is a type of rock music specifically centered around strong emotions— being emotional, or “emo”. Much of emo music and culture centers itself around dark themes, and the struggles of mental illness and heartbreak. Similar correlations were made in the 1980s between heavy metal music and suicide, and Hannah Bond herself was far from the first girl whose suicide was attributed to emo. So, what drives the correlation made by media and parents between rock music and adolescent suicide? Specifically, what were the factors and attitudes driving the panic in the 2000s around emo music? Can music actually cause teenagers to become depressed or suicidal? Did the emo subculture actively promote self-injury? Or was it a safe place for adolescents to find a community, identity, and catharsis? This thesis aims to answer all these questions and provide a defense of the emo genre. Empirical evidence shows that music is not a causal factor in mental illness and that it can instead provide catharsis. Anecdotes from those involved in emo and from outside observers showed that the emo community itself was centered around finding hope in the midst of darkness and that its leaders de-stigmatized mental problems. Finally, much of the criticism of the genre has been misplaced and hyperbolic due to moral panic. We have concluded that emo music and subculture have had a net positive effect on those involved
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IN EDUCATION
Get PDFA plethora of research and studies have been compiled on the benefits of physical activity in daily life, yet it is still lacking in the realm of education. Across all grade levels, an increase in physical activity would be beneficial to students’ academic performance and overall health. In education as a whole, there is a large amount of sedentary behavior associated with the classroom and learning. Elementary students have shorter attention spans than adults, and demand larger amounts of time for exercise and hands-on learning. Implementing short physical activity breaks or incorporating physical activity lessons create a better learning environment for these children. After such implementation, studies have shown their academic and classroom performance to increase. Included in this is more efficient brain function and higher productivity as a result of their brains being able to refocus. Including exercise at the college level is equally as important as in grade school. Research has demonstrated a sizeable decrease in the percentage of students receiving adequate amounts of physical activity from high school to college. This has remarkable effects on the remainder of their lives. By requiring physical activity credits to graduate, young adults will be encouraged to continue these healthy habits into their independent adult life

The Literature Review examines the current research that illustrate pornography’s negative impacts on men’s perceptions and expectations of women. Common themes occur throughout the literature that reveal how men’s shifting mindsets due to pornography consumption affects how they socialize with women and how their romantic relationships are harmed. Additionally, the thesis discusses the content of pornography and how pornography’s aggressive and violent material may influence men’s sexual attitudes and expectations. There is also the acknowledgement of literature that supports and advocates for pornography consumption. The study conducted supports the divisive nature of the current literature and ultimately affirms pornography’s negative impacts from the perspectives of both males and females. THE EFFECTIVENESS OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ON THE LITERATURE-BASED CHINESE TEACHING
Get PDFThe surge in Chinese language learning as CSL/CFL increases needs for quality teacher professional development training. Although researchers report advantages of employing literature and confirm the value of literature in teaching foreign language, few studies focused on CSL/CFL teacher training, specifically, for the use of literature-based Chinese language teaching for CSL/CFL classes. Professional Development (PD) provided opportunities for Chinese teachers to learn and practice strategies that are necessary to teach CSL/CFL with literature-based teaching. The researcher conducted the PD training evaluation to determine the significant effect on the Chinese teachers’ confidence, attitude, and overall preparedness for teaching literature to non-Chinese learners. Participants, from their various locations in China, joined the researcher’s training via Tencent. The study’s Quantitative data were collected via the researcher-created pre-post surveys measuring the Chinese teachers’ confidence, attitude, and overall preparedness for teaching literature to non-Chinese learners before and upon the completion of the PD training. There were significant differences between the pre- and post-test scores on the measure of participant perceptions of overall preparedness for teaching CSL/CFL, their confidence in instructing via literature-based lessons in the content area, and perceptions of their ability to regularly implement literature-based teaching strategies in the classroom when appropriate to student learning
SOCIAL INTERACTION WITH NATIVE SPEAKERS’ EFFECT ON FOREIGN LANGUAGE ENJOYMENT AND FOREIGN LANGUAGE ANXIETY
Get PDFThis study yielded data surrounding the relationship between knowing a native speaker and foreign language acquisition, alongside the factors of foreign language enjoyment and foreign language anxiety. Through a survey conducted with 46 language learners from a variety of backgrounds who were contacted through social media, the research questions guiding the study were answered with implications for all language learners both inside and outside the classroom. Through statistical analysis, data proved that knowing a native speaker of the target language is a significant predictor of language learners having a higher perception of proficiency. A higher perception of proficiency is also a significant predictor of lower perceptions of anxiety and nervousness. Results indicate a need for further study of foreign language acquisition and relationships between language learners and native speakers alongside learner emotions
