    Get PDF
Students who are gifted are often pulled in a variety of career directions because of their tendency to have many interests and passions. This study was designed to better understand the experience of adults who are gifted and their career choice. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore what career paths adults who are gifted follow, specifically whether they choose to work in the education field or not. This phenomenological study explored four main themes in an individual who is graduated from a gifted education program’s life: Gifted Program Experience, Career and Interests, Family Influence, and Social Emotional. The themes were derived from reoccurring ideas and categories from the interviews of 20 adults, over the age of 18, who graduated from a gifted education program. This study was based on Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences. Results from the study revealed participant interest or participation in nontraditional teaching or education in their chosen professional field. The results of this study could illuminate the interests and intent of individuals who are gifted and their career choices

A QUALITATIVE STUDY OF THE FACTORS THAT SUPPORT FEMALE EDUCATORS WHILE RAISING YOUNG CHILDREN

    Get PDF
The purpose of this research study was to examine the personal and professional factors that support female educators while raising young children. This study was designed as a bounded case study that included six women who taught in a Christian school while they were raising children. Their interview data revealed three major themes: conflict, personal supports, and professional supports. Participants reported conflicts such as conflicting obligations between their teacher and maternal roles, expectations, and priorities. Key supports helped to resolve or avoid these conflicts. Personal factors such as supportive and extended family members assisted teachers as they balanced the responsibilities of the dual maternal and teacher role. Additional personal factors in the workplace included the teachers’ strategic organizational systems, planning, and reliable childcare arrangements. The teachers in this study had a strong sense of their personal identities and calling as teachers and parents, which helped them to persevere through challenges. Professional supports included supportive leadership, part-time work opportunities, professional development, and relationships within the institution. The results of this study suggest that certain factors can support teachers who are parents in their personal lives and in the workplace to reduce conflicts and dissonance identified in the literature and in this study

SOCIETAL PERCEPTIONS SURROUNDING CHILD MALTREATMENT AND MENTAL HEALTH

    Get PDF
Child maltreatment, mental illness, and criminal behavior are all commonly known topics and a wide variety of research has been conducted to investigate the implications of all three concepts. Even though there is quality research on each of these topics, the awareness of important facts and theories in these areas may not be known to the general public. This study surveyed university students on their knowledge of the characteristics and risk factors of victims of child maltreatment, in addition to their perceptions of people with mental illness. Items included in the study were comprised of items from Taylor and Dear’s CAMI Questionnaire (1981) and Price’s Public Perceptions of Child Abuse and Neglect in a Midwestern Urban Community Questionnaire (2001). Majority of the responses regarding the participants’ perceptions of child abusers and child victims were accurate, however, 57% of respondents thought that males were most likely to abuse a child, whereas preexisting data shows that children are more likely to be maltreated by a female. The items in the survey that asked about perceptions of mental health received a relatively acceptant response rate, as well. Fifty-eight participants strongly agreed that our mental hospitals seem more like prisons the mentally ill can be cared for and 53 people strongly agreed or agreed that mental illness is an illness like any other. These results propose the idea that the stigma surrounding mental illness is declining and awareness regarding child maltreatment is increasing. Surveying larger groups of people that span a wider age range would be an area of further research as well as surveying a greater amount of college students to see if their perceptions and stigmas could be dependent on their college major

THE MATH SELF-EFFICACY OF HOMESCHOOL PARENTS AND THE INFLUENCE OF MATH SELF-EFFICACY ON CURRICULUM CHOICE

    Get PDF
The present study investigated the math self-efficacy of homeschool parents and whether there was a correlation between parental math self-efficacy (PMSE) and parents’ choice of mathematics curriculum. A simple random sample of parents with at least one child enrolled in Classical Conversations (N = 223) completed a survey to measure their math self-efficacy and provide information about their homeschool and mathematics curriculum choice. The PMSE level was a statistically significant 4.17, indicating that the sample has much confidence in their ability to learn and do mathematics. The study revealed a significant though small correlation between PMSE and the level of involvement required by the curriculum. As PMSE increased, parental involvement in the curriculum also increased. As increasing numbers of parents choose to homeschool, understanding the academic characteristics of homeschool parents will allow homeschool support organizations and curriculum developers to best meet the needs of parents as they seek to educate their children

    Get PDF
Students all over the world are developing negative perceptions of the subject of mathematics and shying away from careers in the field of math as a result. The purpose of this study was to determine how various factors, such as students’ personalities, upbringings, and experiences with online learning, affected their perceptions of math and resulting career choices. A survey asking participants about these factors in relation to their perceptions of math was sent out through email to Southeastern University (SEU) undergraduate students and math professors. The survey received 200 responses with 194 of them being Southeastern University undergraduate students and the other six being either SEU math professors or graduate students. Study data were analyzed in a preliminary, descriptive statistical manner, and descriptive and inferential statistical techniques were used to address the study’s research questions. The results of the study indicated that students were most likely to enjoy mathematics and pursue careers in this field when they had high math self-efficacy beliefs, low math anxiety, perfectionistic or analytical tendencies, effective math teachers whom they had positive relationships with, and supportive parents who expressed the importance of math to their children

A QUALITATIVE STUDY OF SENIOR ADULTS’ PERCEPTIONS OF CONNECTEDNESS AFTER BIBLIOTHERAPY

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to explore the influence of bibliotherapy on senior adults’ perceptions of social connectedness. The research question was “What are senior adults’ perceptions of connectedness after bibliotherapy?” To explore the research question, a virtual book study was conducted via Zoom. Seven retired adults took part in the virtual book study and were interviewed at the end of the study. A qualitative phenomenological approach was used to examine the lived experiences of connectedness among participants of the virtual book study; interview responses were distilled to core meanings. Analysis of the interview data resulted in three major themes: connection to self, connection to others, and connection to the book/author. Key points gleaned from the study resulted in the formation of a model designed to guide future virtual book studies to encourage social connectedness. Based on participants’ feedback, participants desired time for recreational conversation before and after each meeting, less reading each week, more book study sessions to cover the material, and Zoom training before and during the study. Choosing an engaging book was key for fostering connections to self, others, and the book. The virtual book study was important for older adults as it was a form of accountability and allowed senior participants to socially engage safely from their homes

Collegiate Team Sport Participation and Adult Leadership Development

    Get PDF
Collegiate sport requires significant investments of time and resources from universities, athletes, sponsors, and boosters; however, the leadership and leadership development benefits of collegiate sport remains relatively uncertain (Desrochers, 2013; Hardin, 2015; Wright & Côté, 2003). This study explored the impact of female collegiate team sport participation on self-perceived leadership development and leadership style. Research was conducted using qualitative methods, interviewing 12 former female collegiate rugby athletes, all no more than 3 years removed from their collegiate rugby experience. The aim was to understand how female collegiate athletes experience the process of leadership development, how participation influences an athlete’s perceived leadership style, the influence of coaches and team roles on their leadership development, and how former female athletes display transformational leadership as adults, if at all. The results of the study confirmed that collegiate rugby played a role in the formation of adult leadership styles, yet important questions remain regarding the process of leadership development within collegiate sport. The findings contributed to the body of literature relating to collegiate sport research, specifically female athlete literature. The findings of this study may also directly benefit athletes, coaches, and university administration
