The role of intercultural communication in recruiting and retaining student-athletes: A phenomenological study on understanding the sociocultural aspects of building non-revenue teams in intercollegiate sport
Get PDFRecruiting and retaining student-athletes at NCAA Division I and II member institutions is difficult. However, the coaches of non-revenue-producing sport have developed communication measures to assist in successfully fielding teams of culturally unique individuals that build an ingroup culture to compete despite limiting factors. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to examine the lived experience of non-revenue-producing sporting coaches’ intercultural communication methodical variations in interactions with student-athletes as each coach adapts exchanges to serve as relationship-building elements to balance cultural norms with the acceptance of unfamiliar cultural behaviors. Relevant themes emerged from the data gathered during participant interviews, which were used to structure the information and guide the research. The resulting analysis supported the assertion that non-revenue-producing sport coaches use adaptive measures to foster intercultural communication opportunities to create comfortable spaces for interactions in unfamiliar cultural situations, resulting in positive ingroup relationships that benefit the institution and the overall team culture
EXPLORING THE APPLICATION OF COMPASSIONATE LEADERSHIP BEHAVIORS IN THE WORKPLACE
Get PDFThis qualitative case study answers the central research question “How are compassionate leadership behaviors encouraged and/or discouraged in the workplace?” Interviews with five individuals from one work team in an Am Law 100 law firm revealed how the compassionate leadership behaviors of integrity, accountability, presence, empathy, authenticity, and dignity (Shuck et al., 2019) were applied at work. This research explored four themes: leadership courage, growth mindset, empowerment, and coaching performance. Each theme has four subthemes further describing the data: Leadership courage: managing consistently and fairly, being transparent, communicating honestly, and taking risks; Growth mindset: working intentionally, developing others, learning continuously, and self-reflecting to improve; Empowerment: dispersed decision-making, fostering diversity of thought, seeking employee input, and respecting/caring for the individual; Coaching performance: giving/receiving feedback, upholding accountability, setting/clarifying expectations, and facilitating productive conversations. Robert Greenleaf’s (1977) servant leadership theory framed the study. Limitations of the study include a singular industry and organizational focus, data sources solely from interviews, and the constrained definitions of compassionate leadership by Shuck et al. (2019). Future research should replicate the study in other groups and organizations and consider quantitative experiments to compare employee and leader perspectives

Get PDFSchool shooting prevention has become a priority for educational leadership for nearly twenty years. The brutality and significant loss of life distinguish the attacks at Columbine High School and Sandy Hook Elementary School (Jonson, 2017). However, lawmakers encounter difficulty with the wide range of behaviors, program initiatives, and risk management efforts involved to ensure the safety of all children (Cowell & McDonald, 2018). Coincidentally, a national model for school-based emergency plans has not been identified, which leaves many school districts inadequately fit to keep the student population safe in the event a school shooting were to occur on a campus (Stough et al., 2018). With the unprecedented increase in school shootings, the revamping of school-wide procedures and emergency plans must encapsulate the needs of all students, including those individual students with significant disabilities (Embury et al., 2019). Programs (e.g., special education) need to include drafting school safety plans and preparation due to the complexity of limitations and severity of disabilities possessed by many students on campuses. The purpose of this case study was to describe the statewide policies that address safety measures and the limited considerations for vulnerable student populations regarding an active school shooter scenario on a campus. Following within-case and cross-case analysis of interviewees’ data and active shooter protocols provided by the Texas Education Agency, three themes emerged: procedures, preparation, and population. In the present study, thematic findings indicated a weakness in the current generalized safety plan, and improvement is necessary to increase the provision of campuses’ severe and profound populations. VARIOUS SYNTHETIC PATHWAYS TOWARDS EFAVIRENZ AND ITS ANALOGS; THE REPLACEMENT OF THE SIDE CHAIN
Get PDFCyclopropyl acetylene (CA) is a key intermediate in the synthesis of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) reverse transcriptase inhibitor, Efavirenz (EFV), an antiviral drug used to treat HIV. CA is an expensive raw material, difficult to obtain, and employed in the preparation of medications to combat acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). It was found that the structure could be synthesized by the utilization of PCl5; however, this resulted in unwanted ring opening products. To address this issue, a one pot synthesis was developed using Ph3PCl2 as a mild chlorinating agent. In addition, a new analog has been proposed substituting the cyclopropyl group for alternative cyclic hydrocarbons. Instead of using a cyclopropyl ring, a larger ring with more than three carbons can result in less ring strain and subsequently, less ring opening. Previous experiments have tested other ring structures; however, larger cyclic hydrocarbons have yet to be studied within these conditions. Efforts toward the synthesis of higher order analogs including cyclobutyl acetylene will be discussed once the optimal yield using a variety of bases for the synthesis is determined. SUBJECTIVE WELL-BEING OF TEACHERS IN K-12 CHRISTIAN SCHOOLS
Get PDFThis non-experimental, quantitative study aimed to examine the factors that influence the self-perceived well-being of teachers in K-12 Christian schools. The sample for this study was convenient, non-probable, and purposive and comprised of 81 teachers from one Christian school system in Florida. The measurement tool used in this study is based on Seligman’s (2011) work on well-being. The Workplace PERMAH Profiler is a valid and reliable (α = .94) instrument that measures flourishing in terms of six domains: positive emotion, engagement, relationships, meaning, accomplishment, and health. The internal reliability of study participant responses to survey items associated with the construct of well-being was evaluated using Cronbach’s alpha (α). The internal reliability levels achieved in the study across all 23 survey items associated with the study’s construct of well-being was very good at α = .87. A one-sample t-test was conducted to assess the statistical significance of study participant response to survey items associated with the six dimensions of the study’s overarching construct of well-being. The response effects for all six dimensions of the construct of well-being were statistically significant. In five of the six dimensions of the construct of well-being, the response effects were considered huge (d ≥ 2.0). The response effect for the dimension of health was considered medium (d = .47). The single greatest response effect within the six dimensions of the construct of well-being was reflected in the dimension of meaning (d = 3.94), closely followed by the dimension of accomplishment (d = 3.44)
AN EVALUATION OF PARENT ENGAGEMENT AMONGST CULTURALLY AND LINGUISTICALLY DIVERSE FAMILIES OF HAITIAN DESCENT
Get PDFEmpirical research on family-school partnerships highlights family engagement as a motivating force for educational success. However, the concept of family engagement is an obstacle as the notion of family-school partnerships differs amongst stakeholders. Mutual understanding of the beliefs sustaining family engagement is fundamental to building effective partnerships between educators, families, and the community. The quantitative, non-experimental study aimed to evaluate the cultural and linguistic factors that may influence parental engagement among culturally and linguistically diverse families, especially those of Haitian descent. The findings demonstrated that the study’s demographic identifier variables, such as primary language, child birthplace, parent birthplace, relationship to the child, educational setting, participant gender, child gender, and state of the child’s school, did not exert any effect upon the perceptions of family engagement. Perceptions of family efficacy were statistically significantly predictive of perceptions of family engagement. However, perceptions of school fit did not substantially affect perceptions of family engagement. Simple slopes analysis was conducted to explore further the effect of school fit on the relationship between family efficacy and family engagement. The simple slopes analysis indicates that as perceptions of school fit increase, the relationship between perceptions of family efficacy and family engagement strengthens. The interaction between family efficacy and grit was non-statistically significant, indicating that perceptions of grit do not moderate the relationship between perceptions of family efficacy and family engagement. HEIDI HESTER: A TOP SECRET CALLING Out of the 12,000 students who applied, Heidi Hester was one of a few hundred accepted to participate in a 10-week paid summer internship with the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) Honors Internship Program. As part of the program, Hester was able to jump-start her career in criminal justice by gaining experience going on searches, meeting with members of the evidence response team, visiting a federal court and riding in a Black Hawk helicopter.

Trauma-informed care is an approach to human service that acknowledges the prevalence of trauma and widespread effects of trauma on service users, providers, and organizations. The tenets of trauma-informed care include trauma awareness, safety, trustworthiness, choice, collaboration, a strengths-based approach, and respect for culture and gender. This study is a comparative analysis of servant leadership, trauma-informed workplace climate, and employee factors of compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue. Results of the quantitative research indicate that employee professional quality of life was positively affected by both the presence of servant leadership and a trauma-informed workplace climate
