Understanding Patient Experiences with Brief Motivational Interventions for Substance Use Disorders (SUD)
No full textThis capstone project utilized a brief motivational intervention survey and semi-structured interview aimed at obtaining patient feedback on the brief motivational interventions (BMI) provided by occupational therapy inpatient services at The Christ Hospital in Cincinnati Ohio. These interventions include a “Recovery Tips Packet,” an activity card sort, exploration of leisure activities, coping skills, replacement behaviors, and creation of an action plan. The brief motivational intervention survey and semi-structured interview gathered insights from patients on how to improve BMI-based strategies to enhance engagement, motivation, and support long-term recovery among patients with substance use disorder (SUD). Participants were recruited from the newly admitted SUD BMI intervention for occupational therapy referrals at The Christ Hospital. Once informed consent is signed, the participants receive BMI by occupational therapy. However, based on scheduling of discharges and availability, two participants completed the brief motivational intervention survey, where they strongly agreed on four out of the five questions. Common themes observed include the difficulty of recovery and the most effective approaches to it. These findings suggest that occupational therapists providing specific interventions for substance use can impact long-term recovery rates and outcomes.
