Günter finished school in 1954 but as a member of the “capitalist” classes was barred from studying at a university in East Germany. The signal hypothesis for secretory proteins formulated by Günter Blobel and David Sabatini.
Blobel and Sabatini hypothesized in 1971 that a nascent peptide, bearing a terminal ‘signal’, interacts with a binding factor attached to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane, allowing docking of the ribosome and its associated mRNA. Upon passage of the newly synthesized protein across the ER membrane, the ribosome is able to dissociate from the site of synthesis and re-enter the cytoplasmic pool, ready for another round of synthesis. Günter Blobel: Stockholm and beyond
Günter Blobel was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1999 for “the discovery that proteins have intrinsic signals that govern their transport and localization in the cell.” These signals have been shown to be universal in living cells. The techniques Blobel developed to study translocation are now used in laboratories around the world. Beyond resolving a basic biological problem, Blobel\u27s research has furthered scientific understanding of human physiology and pathology. His seminal work laid the foundation for the modern field of molecular biology, and generations of scientists have built on his findings.
