    America’s Criminal Justice System Interaction, Housing Opportunities, and Job Sustainability: Perceptions from Residents of the Greater New Haven Area

    This study explored the perceived relationship between criminal justice system (CJS) involvement and housing and employment outcomes among residents of the Greater New Haven area. Prior research has demonstrated that individuals with criminal records or histories of incarceration often face significant obstacles when attempting to secure stable housing or employment. Through qualitative analysis of survey responses from 47 participants, this study highlights how increased contact with the justice system is perceived to negatively impact job sustainability and housing opportunities, while limited or no contact appears to serve as a form of privilege. Using an inductive coding method, recurring themes were identified and analyzed to examine how individuals with different levels of CJS involvement perceive the long-term consequences of legal system contact. The findings emphasize the compounding nature of these challenges, particularly for low-income residents, and ultimately contribute to broader conversations on the structural barriers that persist in reentry and poverty-alleviation efforts. To conclude, this research emphasizes the need for equitable policy reforms that address housing and employment barriers tied to criminal justice involvement

    Mindfulness Meditation Type on Self-Compassion Levels

    Focused attention and open monitoring are two types of mindfulness meditation, which emphasizes the importance of present moment awareness while meditating. Both approaches can be done while sitting or walking. While research has explored the correlation between mindfulness meditation type and posture type, it remains unknown how a combination of mindfulness mediation type and posture type impacts self-compassion levels. This study examined if a combination of FA seated, FA walking, OM seated, or OM walking enhances self-compassion by having participants meditate an assigned meditation for fifteen minutes a week for six weeks and complete an assessment at the baseline, midline, and post-study. While the results indicate no significance among meditation type or posture type, the OM seated mindfulness meditation condition showed the greatest increase in self-compassion levels from the baseline to midline. Both seated conditions also produced higher self-compassion levels than the walking conditions. The findings from this study suggest that a longer period would be needed to examine the benefits on self-compassion because data from participants that completed the full six weeks

    Research Relevance in the Trump 2.0 Era: Navigating Policy, Trade, and Business Scholarship

ABR has prioritized research that matters—not only to academic scholars, but to business practitioners, students, and policy observers. The new policy directions under the Trump 2.0 administration offer a reconfigured environment, where global trade, education, immigration, and enterprise are undergoing rapid recalibration. These changes call for rigorous academic engagement, not ideological entrenchment. Our role at ABR is not to advocate political positions.     Two General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) Compliant Approaches to Scoring Firm Financial Frailty in Business Litigation

    A litany of data artifacts, including the possibility of source data drift, lack of generalizability, and imprecise risk categories, all weaken—and may even impugn—estimates of a firm\u27s economic frailty when using the Altman Z-score as a formulaic measure of risk in business litigation. These limitations constitute potential veto points which may be exploited by opposing counsel in court proceedings. We offer two possibly complementary approaches to obtaining estimates of the probability of a firm’s likelihood of business failure. To illustrate these approaches, we use the case study data in O\u27Haver (1993) and Local Outlier Probabilities (Breunig et al., 2000; Kriegel et al., 2009) and PRIDIT (Brockett, et al., 2002; Lieberthal, 2008) to first order the outcomes in terms of a numeric score. Once ordered, the scores represent either probability-of-insolvency measure or an insolvency ranking. We then map the scores onto bivariate classes using Fisher-Jenks clustering. Each algorithm’s accuracy is obtained by comparing its predictions of either failure of viability to those of the labeled data in O\u27Haver (1993). Both procedures are sound and with equal accuracy to the original discriminant analysis featured in O\u27Haver (1993). We hold that these competing approaches are capable of navigating opposing counsel objections. Importantly, our approach also falls well within the interpretability criteria demanded by the EU General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”) and other regulations taking aim at black-box algorithms

    Unilateralism’s Double-Edged Sword: Understanding the Impact of the United States’ Unilateral Actions Towards Afghanistan and Iraq

    This thesis will explore the effects of the United States\u27 unilateral actions throughout the war on terror. Has the United States pursuing unilateral actions in Afghanistan and Iraq equated to an increase in anti-Americanism, leading to increasing terrorist acts that endanger its national security? The answer is yes. Although, from what this research will reveal anti-Americanism begins to be refueled in these countries but not due to any current direct conflict between the above-referenced nation-states and the United States. Previous research reveals that the United States\u27 relationship with unilateralism was not a new phenomenon that arose during the war on terror, but a practice that could have been mistaken for isolationism. Existing literature details the United States\u27 relationship with Afghanistan and Iraq leading up to the war on terror and the United States\u27 unilateral mission to not only combat terrorism but spread democracy. Subsequent reports from the U.S. Government, interviews, and news articles reveal that although the United States is not fully to blame for the turmoil in Afghanistan and the past conflict in Iraq its continued presence in the Middle East threatens its national security. Especially due to the current war in Gaza raising sentiments of anti-Americanism once more

    The Effect of Binaural Beats on Recognition and Recall

    Binaural beats, the playing of a different frequency in each ear that the brain perceives as one, have been tested with recognition and recall in forms of simple memory tasks. However, there is a lack of investigation on binaural beats\u27 effect on recognition and recall in more complicated ways of these forms. A relationship between these would be beneficial and additive to the field of music and memory as a significant effect could indicate a place in education for binaural beats. It is hypothesized that binaural beats will have a positive effect on higher forms of recognition and recall. Participants underwent binaural beat stimulation versus a no stimulation control condition and then completed a College Board PSAT Exam. The discussion of past methods of understanding music and memory can aid in the understanding of binaural beats\u27 significance

    Transcriptional Subtype and MGMT Methylation Status of Patient-Derived Glioblastoma Stem-Like Cells: Implications for Temozolomide Response

    Glioblastoma (GBM), the most aggressive primary brain tumor, is characterized by profound molecular heterogeneity, which contributes to its resistance to standard therapies. This study investigated the interplay between O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) promoter methylation status, transcriptional subtype, and response to temozolomide (TMZ), an alkylating chemotherapeutic agent, in patient-derived glioblastoma stem-like cells (GSCs). We analyzed three well annotated GSC lines derived from patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models, assessing MGMT promoter methylation, measuring TMZ sensitivity through IC₅₀ assays, and inferring transcriptional subtypes using existing RNA sequencing data from the originating PDX tumors. Our findings demonstrated that MGMT methylation status alone did not reliably predict TMZ response. Two GSC lines exhibited MGMT promoter methylation yet showed differing TMZ sensitivities, while the one unmethylated line unexpectedly demonstrated the highest sensitivity to TMZ. Further analysis of transcriptional subtypes revealed that the TMZ resistant GSC belonged to the Classical subtype a molecular class often associated with poor response to therapy while another methylated, moderately resistant line showed a hybrid Mesenchymal/Classical profile. The TMZ sensitive, unmethylated line exhibited mixed features of the Proneural and Classical subtypes. These findings emphasize that transcriptional subtype context may significantly modulate TMZ sensitivity, potentially overriding the predictive value of MGMT methylation alone. The observed variability among GSC lines underscores the complexity of therapeutic resistance in GBM and highlights the need for integrated molecular profiling approaches to improve biomarker-based treatment stratification and guide personalized therapeutic strategies targeting resistant tumor-initiating cell populations

    Role of Borrelia Burgdorferi Infection in Normal Breast Cell Metabolic Reprogramming and Warburg Phenotype Development

    Lyme disease, caused by Borrelia burgdorferi, is a growing concern in the United States and traditionally presents with a bull’s eye rash and flu-like symptoms following a tick bite. Emerging research suggests that B. burgdorferi can also induce cancer formation, or tumorigenesis. Various pathogens can drive tumorigenic changes through means of inducing a metabolic shift in normal cells, a phenomenon known as the Warburg effect - a hallmark of cancer. While there is evidence of B. burgdorferi triggering Warburg effect in immune cells, its impact on normal breast epithelial cells remains unclear. This thesis investigated whether B. burgdorferi infection can trigger Warburg-like metabolic reprogramming in MCF10A cells using short term (up to 72h) and prolonged infections (18 weeks). Changes in glycolytic metabolism and gene expression were evaluated using a glucose uptake assay and quantitative real-time PCR for Warburg effect related genes. The glucose uptake assay revealed a significant increase in glucose uptake after the 24 and 72 hours marks, as well as after 18 weeks. Short term infections resulted in a significant downregulation of HK2, with no significant changes in GLUT1, PFKM or HIF1A expression. In contrast, prolonged infections caused a significant upregulation of HK2, PFKM and HIF1A. These findings suggest that B. burgdorferi infections can induce metabolic changes in normal epithelial breast cells, particularly inducing the Warburg Effect. This raises the possibility that chronic bacterial infections may contribute to early cancer development by reprogramming host cell metabolism. Understanding the link between B. burgdorferi infections and cancer development can greatly benefit future clinical research strategies pertaining to early detection and prevention of cancer formation in patients initially bitten by Ixodes ticks
