The Effect of Traditional and Contemporary Management Accounting Practices on Organisational Outcomes and the Moderating Role of Strategy
Get PDFThis study examines the association between the use of a package of contemporary and a package of traditional management accounting practices with organisational outcomes (organisational performance and competitive advantage), and the moderating role of Miles and Snow’s (1978) strategic typologies on these relationships. Based on the responses from 505 US based financial managers, the Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) results indicate that the extent of use of both contemporary and traditional management accounting practices is positively associated with organisational performance and competitive advantage. Furthermore, the findings indicate that with the exception of the reactor typology, Miles and Snow’s (1978) strategy typologies (i.e., defender, prospector, and analyser) moderate the association between the use of management accounting practices with the organisational outcomes. In particular, the findings indicate that the defender (prospector) strategy positively (negatively) moderates the association between the use of a package of traditional (contemporary) management accounting practices with organisational performance. In addition, the results indicate that the defender (analyser) strategy positively (negatively) moderates the association between the use of a package of contemporary management accounting practices with competitive advantage, while the defender (analyser) strategy negatively (positively) moderates the association between the use of a package of traditional management accounting practices with competitive advantage
The Rise of Terrorism in Africa and What It Means For U.S. Policymakers
Get PDFThis thesis utilizes three case studies to measure the rise of terrorism in Africa. This qualitative data leads the reader to one ultimate question: what does the rise in terrorism in Africa mean for the United States (U.S.) and U.S. policymakers, National Security academia, students in National Security, if anything at all? The answer is: if civilian and military compounds are being targeted by these violent extremists, as these three case studies demonstrate, it is my recommendation that U.S. policymakers cease sending troops to the African theater and, instead, allocate funding to the citizens and nonprofits of the countries whom are already there so that they themselves and their country are less likely to fall into the traps of these caliphates that promise jobs and the hopes of a better life. This has the potential to stop the cycle of recruitment or, at the very least, slow and weaken it.
The first case study takes place in Nigeria, studying Boko Haram. The method of data analysis is qualitative analysis as it is developed through case study. Throughout history, the United States has attempted to aid countries experiencing terrorism by sending American troops there to settle unrest. However, history has shown this often simply creates war, and creates political unrest here in the United States. So, sending soldiers overseas is not the answer. But that does not mean the U.S. cannot allocate resources. So, the bottom-line up front is two-fold: one: education is key to preventing terrorism from manifesting further. And two: what this means for U.S. policymakers is that we must pivot to Africa with our funds in terms of allocating resources for leaders there to pour their resources into education from an early age, so citizens in their communities have an in depth understanding of the world and they do not turn to idle hands

Leveraging Text Mining for Trend Analysis and Comparison of Sustainability Reports: Evidence from Fortune 500 Companies
Get PDFIn the recent upsurge in environmental concerns, business sustainability has become more prominent than ever. Organizations worldwide are expected to function sustainably, causing the least negative impact on the environment and promoting harmony among the firm, environment, and society. Most firms report their actions related to sustainability in corporate social responsibility (CSR) reports. This research aims to understand and analyze contemporary trends in CSR reports by Fortune 500 companies using text mining. It compares how the focus of sustainability reports varies across countries and industries along key dimensions of sustainability (i.e., environmental, economic, social, and government). Findings from the study suggest variations in the focus of sustainability reports based on various factors, such as country of origin and company size, sector, and tenure, on the Fortune 500 list. Thus, it helps to gain a deeper understanding of the company’s motivations for focusing on various dimensions of corporate sustainability
Why and When Do Leaders Express Humility? Leader Expressed Humility as Psycho-Social Signaling
Get PDFHumble leadership has generated immense research interest. Yet, little is understood regarding why or when leaders may choose to express humility to their followers. Drawing upon self-determination and signaling theories, this conceptual research seeks to explain why some leaders display humble behaviors toward their followers more than other leaders. Needs for relatedness and competence are proposed as antecedents of humble expressions. Leader optimism is proposed as a moderator of this relationship. I contend leaders sustain expressions of humility to signal their values of relatedness and growth to followers and to encourage humble behaviors among them for mutually beneficial outcomes. Optimism is presented as a contingency variable that may explain additional variance in leader expressions of humility. Theoretical and managerial implications are presented as well as directions for future research
Carry Forward Modeling for High-Frequency Limit-Order Executions: An Emerging Market Perspective
Get PDFIn this study, we estimate the order execution probability of a limit-order book (LOB) and analyze its determinants using high-frequency LOB data from the National Stock Exchange (NSE) of India. For this purpose, we propose an algorithm that estimates the LOB execution time. Using a survival function with log-normal distribution, this study analyzes the significant determinants of the limit-order execution times. The average execution probability is found to be higher for stocks belonging to the information technology and telecom sectors. The limit-order execution probability increases with a larger bid–ask spread, lower limit-order size, and deeper opposite order book. On the other hand, multiple factors, including price aggressiveness, inferior price, limit-order size, and spread, have a direct impact on execution times. The findings could help traders understand various factors influencing the probability of execution and execution time of LOBs. This study is unique in that it models limit-order execution using high-frequency tick-by-tick trading data for emerging markets, such as the NSE of India

To test if the commonly used techniques have room for improvement this project compares them to brand-new ones. In order to understand and utilize stereo microphone placements numerous fundamental ideas need to be considered to achieve a certain sound and level of quality. Every microphone technique variation is used for a certain reason based on how it changes the stereo image, phasing, localization, practicality, and creative manipulation abilities. The purpose of this project is to learn about the evolution and art form of stereo microphone techniques and then analyze the information to create new and unique stereo microphone techniques to compare against the common techniques indicating if they could be improved or not

Presenting Volume 25 and Celebrating ABR Reviewers
Get PDFWe are delighted to present the first issue of volume 25 of ABR. We thought we would thank and celebrate our reviewers for their outstanding contribution to ABR on this occasion.
The peer-review process in academic publishing involves reviewers who have expertise in a domain (see Ali and Watson 2016). We thought we would explain the ABR review process as we celebrate our reviewers. We believe this would be interesting to authors and readers as this would give a glimpse of the peer review process at ABR.
Being a broad-based academic journal brings a discipline expertise challenge to the review process. The research must prima facie be relevant (interesting) and rigorous. But whether the ideas are an adequate contribution to a business discipline can be determined only by disciplinary scholars who study the area in the paper. For example, a CEO Compensation paper is interesting, at face value, to the ABR audience. But it must also seem like a contribution to HR scholars and specifically to the subset of scholars who study CEO Compensation. Thus, we humbly recognize that we do not know the potential contribution without expert reviewers’ opinions, advice, and guidance.
