    An Evaluation of the University\u27s Bystander to Upstander Course

    At the University of New Haven, a course entitled Step Up: Moving from Bystander to Upstander is required for all first-year students. Research suggests that the modality used to distribute information in “Bystander to Upstander” is not as digestible for students as other formats. The purpose of this project was to evaluate the current Bystander to Upstander course. This project used a descriptive research survey that included a Likert-type scale and open-ended questions to determine participants’ opinions of the course, knowledge gained, and how the course has affected them. Participants included first-year students at the University of New Haven who had completed the course in the fall semester. The results indicated that participants scored well on the knowledge section after taking the “Bystander to Upstander” course and were likely to intervene in situations of sexual violence. However, the findings from this study also include participants’ wishes for more flexibility in scheduling as well as different course formats, leaning towards discussion or hands-on learning. The results suggest improvements for the course to make it more effective and achieve its goals of impacting students’ thoughts and behaviors

    Specialized Dentist and Proneness to Stress related to Negative Connotations about Dentistry

    The work of Dentists is important for oral and general health, yet public opinion on Dentists does not reflect an eagerness to associate with Dentists. A common fear children and adults share is the fear of Dentist. Years of rigorous training are done by a Dentist to be able to help patients, yet this help may not be appreciated. Previous research findings have found that those in the Dental Profession reported poor mental health and physical health (Westgarth 2022) , as well as substance abuse issues (Federico and Ruiz 2010) yet limited research has been conducted on if negative connotations about Dentist is playing a part on poorer mental health for Dentist. The present research study sought to find the negative impacts of poor connotations about Dentist on dentist themselves to help the field of Dentistry to learn how to be equipped to help the public. Specifically, patients be more comfortable during Dental visits, as well as prioritizing the mental health of Dentist and reducing the high suicidality rates of Dentists. The study found that dentists are aware of the negative connotations about them, and their field and it does tend to affect them and their mental health/outlook on themselves and their profession

    Student Satisfaction and University Enrollments: Does the Urban or Regional Status of Australian Higher Education Institutions Matter?

    In the aftermath of World War II, Western nations witnessed unprecedented growth in university enrollments, particularly in business schools, driven by the expansion of the publicly funded higher education system. This growth has prompted higher education providers to re-evaluate the critical role of student satisfaction in shaping learning, engagement, and overall institutional success. While the impact of student satisfaction on engagement and academic outcomes is well documented, its influence on broader university enrollments remains underexplored. Using longitudinal data from the Australian Government-funded Quality Indicators for Learning and Teaching (QILT) surveys and universities’ annual reports (2012-2017), we find that universities with higher student satisfaction show significantly higher enrollment rates. Moreover, the positive impact of student satisfaction on enrollment is more pronounced in metropolitan universities. Beyond contributing to social justice theory, this study provides actionable insights for government and higher education management to improve equitable access to higher education and reduce social disparities through strategically allocating resources, capabilities, and support services

    Validation of an Extraction Kit for use in Field Detection of Low-Dose Opiods

    In recent years, analytical instrumentation has been developed to be used in the field by first responders for the fast and reliable identification of a range of substances. The identification of unknown powders by first responders, especially those that may contain low levels of the highly potent opioid, fentanyl, is essential for the safety of the community as well as to first responders. Due to the typically low concentration of fentanyl in drug mixtures, its detection and confirmatory identification by commercially available field-testing options is challenging. The disposable, self-contained field extraction kit developed by RedWave Technology is a potential solution to this problem. The kit enables an organic solvent extraction to increase the available concentrate of the opioid. The validation of this kit included testing in triplicate, of surrogate samples containing target components caffeine and busiprone HCl, as well as fentanyl derivative samples containing common cutting agents and other controlled substances. Each sample was analyzed using a portable attenuated total reflection Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectrometer. The results indicate that simple mixtures with 1% target components allowed for easy identification of the target components after field extraction. More complicated mixtures resulted in coextractions of the target compound and other components such as xylazine, noscapine, quinine, and heroin. Analysis of the collected spectra also revealed contamination due to di-n-octyl phthalate that was co-extracted from plastic components in the extraction kit. Ultimately, this disposable field extraction kit extends the capabilities of portable ATR-FTIR spectrometers to include low-dose fentanyl, thus making it a useful tool for first responders engaged in combatting the opioid epidemic

    The Role of Attachment and Childhood Trauma for Men Parenting During the Reentry Phase: A Mixed Methods Secondary Analysis

    Mass incarceration is a major problem in the U.S., with people of color being the ones most affected by it. Most of the people who are incarcerated are men, and a stark number of these men are parents. Reentry is a critical period for people released where they return home to their communities and families and have to reintegrate into life outside of prison. The recidivism rate in the U.S. is the highest of any other nation, making reentry an important area of focus to help repair the harms caused by mass incarceration. Many men who return home from incarceration are fathers, and this parent-child relationship adds complexity to the reentry experience. Attachment styles and patterns are important indicators of relationship stability and success, and a stark number of men who are incarcerated have experienced trauma in their lives. The objective of this thesis is to examine the ways in which attachment patterns and trauma experienced in childhood influence parenting for men during reentry. A secondary mixed methods data analysis was performed from a larger study exploring the experience of adult men navigating the process of reintegrating into their families and communities after incarceration with the support of a community-based, non-profit reentry organization. Data analyzed is that of nine men who were interviewed, and 24 that were surveyed as part of the primary study. Results from this secondary analysis revealed themes related to trauma and trauma processing, personal growth, and security in parent-child relationships. The themes and quantitative results shed light on the importance of emotional growth and trauma processing to learn positive parenting practices for men during the reentry phase

    A Real-Time IoT-Based Data Acquisition and Monitoring System for Photovoltaic Applications

    The transition to low-carbon energy systems, driven by climate change and fossil fuel scarcity, highlights technologies, such as Photovoltaic (PV) technology, for sustainable energy generation. This paper focuses on enhancing the efficiency of PV monitoring systems by leveraging Internet of Things (IoT) technology for accurate and real-time monitoring of essential parameters, such as voltage, current, and output power. Significant gaps in cost-effective and reliable IoT integration for PV monitoring are addressed, with an emphasis on predictive modeling. In this regard, a low-cost real-time IoT-based data acquisition and monitoring system for PV systems, as a proof of concept for future endeavors in predictive modeling, is introduced in this paper. The methodology and data preparation are discussed, and the experimental results are analyzed to validate the effectiveness of the designed data acquisition and monitoring system

    Characteristics and Potential Sources of Single-use Plastics Debris in Two Aquatic Systems in New Haven, Connecticut

    Plastic debris remains a major problem in aquatic ecosystems. This study provides an assessment of the proportion, potential sources, and geographic origin of plastics and other solid waste debris (PSWD) in both freshwater and marine systems in New Haven City, Connecticut. Data was collected through four (4) cleanup events within the Long Wharf Park (LWP) and West River Memorial Park (WRMP), working with community scientists in the New Haven area (CT) in May, September, and October, 2024. A total gross weight of 417 lb of PSWD was collected in approximately 1.4 km (0.9 mile) altogether in LWP and WRMP. The study sorted and analyzed 35% (146 lb) of the total gross weight of the debris collected that consisted of 2945 items. Plastic food and beverage-related items (35.9%) were the most common items, followed by non-plastic debris that comprised glass, metal, wood, paper, and fabric items (33.85%) and other plastic items (13.99%), such as plastic caps, pieces of hard and soft plastics, and household plastics (e.g., toys, cloth hangers, etc.). A large fraction of the PSWD (56.9%, n=1676) collected were single-use plastics (SUPs) dominated by food wrappers, small/miniature liquor bottles (nips bottles), and cigarette butts associated with Frito-Lay, Sazerac, and Newport tobacco brands, respectively. Most of the brands of PSWD (72.3%, n=1187) identified with intact labels originated from the United States (US). In addition, items (27.7%, n=455) that originated from countries outside the US (11 countries in total) also had distributors within the US. A chi-square test of independence revealed a statistically significant association between the study sites and the proportion of SUPs by use categories (X² = 216.004, p = \u3c 0.001). Also, a conceptual model and semi-quantitative analysis revealed that nip bottles were ubiquitous among all the SUPs; these items can easily leak through different ecosystems, i.e., from freshwater to marine systems. Across the study sites, land-based activity indicator items formed the majority of the debris (LWP=98.52%, WRMP=86.4%) compared to waterways/marine indicator items (LWP=0.2%, WRMP=0.6%). Based on the findings, recommendations for PSWD management in Connecticut could include the following actions: (a) increasing awareness on littering, dumping, and smoking regulations together with surveillance at public parks and beaches; (b) refining guidelines to allocate a quota of funds accrued from the surcharge program on nips to specifically search and clean up nip bottles; and (c) expanding the extended producer responsibility (EPR) program for SUPs

    Designing Efficient and Equitable Freight Services Markets for Sustainable Economic Performance

    Despite the indispensability of freight trucking services and truckers’ role as critical stakeholders in supply chains, relatively little attention has been paid to analyzing small independent truckers’ roles. Shippers often prefer working with larger trucking companies to the detriment of smaller independent truckers, who must grapple with an inherently disadvantageous job market. Furthermore, in the presence of uncertainty or peak demand periods, trucker shortages can pose significant economic challenges for shippers and downstream customers. In this paper, we propose an analytical framework to address these challenges in efforts to enhance the sustainability of the freight service industry. We formulate and solve a weighted bi-objective optimization model that simultaneously maximizes the total profits of both shippers and truckers to design a sustainable freight services market. Further, we leverage Monte Carlo simulation trials to examine how all players in this market can achieve a better solution under uncertainty. Ultimately, after evaluating multiple scenarios, we find that shippers and truckers yield the highest economic benefits under a balanced design that leverages principles of supply chain coordination, while satisfying all demand from shippers. This framework can serve as a decision support tool for policymakers who aim to ensure all stakeholders in the market can become and remain profitable. Based on our findings, this study suggests practical implications on how to consider humanitarian policies aimed at promoting equity for truckers and ensuring the timely shipment of essential products for both shippers and truckers
