    There’s Hope in Our Heart

    Created 2014/2024. This work of art is acrylic on canvas, 20” by 30”. A part of me once believed, perhaps naively, that having a child could keep hope alive between parents who had separated. Facing a 28-year-to-life prison sentence and barely able to see my son, I feared he would grow up not knowing me and might repeat the same patterns my parents did- having children with different partners. I didn’t want him to experience a revolving door of father figures. Instead, I held onto hope that his mother and I could find common ground in our love for him and do right by him. The confinement of a 6’ by 8’ prison cell became a place for me to explore and travel back to the memories of being in nature with my mother. This piece was inspired by those memories and the forest sounds that still echo within me.     Asset Returns and Economic Uncertainty: A Cross-Country Analysis

    This paper examines the effects of economic uncertainty (idiosyncratic vis-à-vis common uncertainty) on equity, bond and housing returns across both developed and developing countries. Building on International/Intertemporal Capital Asset Pricing Model (ICAPM), we find that economic uncertainty exerts negative effects on equity, bond and housing returns. When we decompose economic uncertainty into two parts: idiosyncratic and common economic uncertainty, we find that ‘idiosyncratic uncertainty’ affects equity, bond and housing returns more negative and pronounced than ‘common’ uncertainty, where investors do not demonstrate differences in responses to the different dimensions of uncertainty. Moreover, there are weak lagged effects of economic uncertainty on asset returns. Additionally, we find negative uncertainty premium for equity more persistently in bullish rather than bearish market conditions. Our results are also robust for low frequency data and inclusion of covid period in the analysis. Our findings have implications for policy makers in both developed and emerging markets regarding clear communication of economic policies

    How and When Leaders’ Self-Sacrifice Backfires: Examining the Impact on Subordinate Unethical Pro-Organizational Behavior

    Self-sacrificial leadership has generally been studied in terms of its beneficial effects on organizations. However, recent research has challenged this notion by highlighting that leaders’ self-sacrifice can also produce dysfunctional outcomes for leaders and their followers. The present study draws on social identity theory and extends this novel perspective by examining whether self-sacrificial leader behaviors can inadvertently encourage unethical pro-organizational behavior (UPOB) among subordinates. The study further explores the mediating role of organizational identification and the moderating role of followers’ unethical tolerance and ethical organizational climate. Using time-lagged data from 271 employees, results confirm that leaders’ self-sacrifice is indirectly related to UPOB through organizational identification. The indirect relationship gets weakened when followers have low unethical tolerance, and the organizational climate is highly ethical. This study augments our understanding of the antecedents of UPOB and the boundary conditions under which UPOB may be curtailed. Implications for theory and practice are discussed

    Effects of Ethanol on Gaba Transaminase

    Ethanol is the primary active ingredient in alcoholic beverages, and functions in the body as a central nervous system (CNS) depressant. The overt effects ethanol has on the body, e.g. diminished cognitive ability, loss of motor control, slurred speech, impaired balance, etc., are well documented. While the behavioral consequences of consumption are well understood, how ethanol actually functions on a mechanistic level to elicit those effects has yet to be satisfactorily elucidated. The structural homology between ethanol and the C3 and C4 carbons of gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GABA), the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mature CNS, has led us to hypothesize that the mechanism by which ethanol causes CNS depressant effects may be related in part, to the inhibition of GABA catabolic enzymes. This inhibition would be expected to increase the functional concentration of GABA in the inhibitory neuronal pre-synaptic neurotransmitter vesicles, and the inter-neuronal synaptic space following a depolarization event. The two primary enzymes involved in GABA catabolism are GABA-Transaminase (GABA-T) and Succinyl Semialdehyde Dehydrogenase (SSADH). GABA-T exchanges an amine group from GABA with the keto group from the co-substrate a.-ketoglutarate to produce succinyl semialdehyde (SSA) and glutamate. SSA is subsequently oxidized to succinic acid via SSADH, with either NAD+ or NADP+ as the oxidizing agent. Inhibition of either, or both, enzymes would slow the catabolism of GABA, resulting in increased intracellular concentration. We have evaluated aspects of this hypothesis using a combined GABA-TIS SADH mix, and have demonstrated an overall effect of ethanol on the biphasic enzyme system. This research is focused on an effort to distinguish the effects of ethanol, if any, on each enzyme in the linked system. To test this hypothesis, we modified the enzyme assay protocol outlined in Tsukatani, Higuchi & Matsumoto (2005). Activity of the enzyme system was measured indirectly by the amount of NADH produced using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer @ 340 nm. A series of substrate-velocity experiments were conducted with varying concentrations of GABA to evaluate the ethanol-based inhibition of the enzyme system. To isolate the effect on GABA-T, we utilized a pre-incubation period where the necessary cofactor for the oxidation by SSADH, NAD+, was initially withheld. After the pre-incubation, NAD+ was added to the reaction and the absorbance was monitored. As such, if and to the extent that ethanol inhibited the GABA-T reaction, the concentration of SSA available as a substrate for the subsequent NAD+ dependent reaction would be reduced. Michaelis-Menten coefficients (KM) and maximal reaction rates (VMAX) were then determined to evaluate the type inhibition recorded. VMAX was unaffected by the addition of ethanol. KM of the enzyme system as a whole, and specifically for GABA-T, was increased upon the addition of ethanol. These findings are characteristic of competitive inhibition. Therefore, at physiologically relevant levels, ( e.g. 0.1, 0.2 and 0.37 g/dL) ethanol acts as a competitive inhibitor of GABA-T, which can explain the behavioral effects seen with alcohol consumption

    The Ethics of Unhealthy Food and Beverage Advertising to Children: A Bibliometric Analysis and Future Research Agenda

    The widely advertised category of unhealthy food and beverages (F&B) is calorie-dense, nutrient-poor, and associated with long-term harm, particularly for children. Business literature has been largely silent regarding the ethicality of its advertising targeting children and lacks clarity on questions future research needs to address. Based on a bibliometric analysis of 1,851 articles published between 1973 and 2021 containing 70,379 citations, we uncovered five intellectual clusters underlying research on the ethics of unhealthy F&B advertising to children (ATC). Importantly, we propose a concrete roadmap featuring actionable and pertinent unanswered questions to stimulate research in this crucial domain

    Volatile Generation during Autolysis and its relation to Post-Mortem Interval

    The accurate estimation of time since death, also known as the post-mortem interval (PMI) can be a critical aspect of suspicious death investigations. Current methods for PMI estimation are subjective, relying on such observations as rigor and algor mortis, death scene appearance, body temperature, stomach contents etc. Recent efforts to establish an analytical method of PMI estimation have relied on gaseous collection of volatile compounds to relate the time and rate of appearance of such compounds, to PMI.This study attempted to establish an analytical method for PMI estimation using a liquid-based tissue extraction and subsequent analysis with gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS). An ethyl acetate (EtOAc) extraction from a ground beef homogenate was analyzed by GC-MS and the relationships between peak heights at 0, 6, 12, 24, 36, and 48 hours were recorded. Those peak heights were compared with one another to explore the temporal relationship of the appearance of volatile compounds during decomposition. The liquid-based extraction proved practical and effective, and the analysis of the ratios between volatiles suggested a reproducible analytical method for estimating PMI

    Why Did I Do That For? Toxic Masculinity, Incarceration, and the Arts

    Throughout this paper, I will touch on culture, toxic masculinity, violence, the need to reduce the harm that is based on toxic masculinity, and the systems put in place to maintain all forms of gender-based violence that come from the different forms of hypermasculinity. With the high level of gender-based violence in our penal system, the exploration of art-based therapeutic programs emerges as a compelling avenue for fostering healing and resilience. This is an effective way to reduce recidivism and work towards ending gender-based violence in our penal system and provide the space where people can go and learn about their traumas and find positive ways to cope with them. The creative expression in prison environments is a testament to the human spirit’s resilience amidst austere conditions. Through craft shops, intricate tattoos, and personalized gifts, incarcerated individuals demonstrate their artistic talents and reclaim elements of their humanity within the confines of correctional facilities. Not only does engaging in art elevate one’s status and foster connections among peers, but it also serves as a means of combating the dehumanizing aspects of the rigid prison system. Through exploring toxic masculinity, I will compare my personal experiences to academic research highlighting the positive impact arts programs have on combating gender-based violence. Toxic masculinity is enhanced in carceral settings; prisons work as microcosms to exploit hypermasculinity, which denies men the opportunity to express their emotions. Arts-based programs can combat this by providing a safe space to express themselves and unlearn their internalized toxic masculinity.https://digitalcommons.newhaven.edu/digital-exhibits/1046/thumbnail.jp
