The confinement of a 6’ by 8’ prison cell became a place for me to explore and travel back to the memories of being in nature with my mother. This piece was inspired by those memories and the forest sounds that still echo within me.     The Relevance of Demographic Similarity and Factuality in Social Influencer Communication Culture – A Comparison Between Hedonic and Utilitarian Conditions

    This work identifies differences in the success factors of influencers given consumers’ consumption goals (hedonic vs. utilitarian). Although practitioners have complained about the lack of know-how regarding this issue, research on the topic remains scarce. Hypotheses on the differing relevance of the demographic similarity of influencers and consumers and of the factuality of influencers’ communication are verified through an empirical investigation. The scenario is consumers’ selection of a hotel for (1) a holiday (hedonic consumption goal) or (2) a professional/university seminar (utilitarian consumption goal). The results are analyzed by structural equation modeling and multigroup analysis. We generate some surprising results. Counterintuitively, demographic similarity is more important under utilitarian than hedonic conditions. Factuality seems equally important in both conditions. Explanations and implications of these findings are provided

    Is the Influence of Oil Shocks on Economic Policy Uncertainty Fading?

    Anecdotal evidence indicates that the influence of crude oil shocks on US economic performance and, by extension, economic policy uncertainty is in decline. While existing studies present mixed evidence on the relationship between economic policy uncertainty and structural oil shocks, they fail to assess any time variation in this relationship. We examine the temporal nature of the influence of three structural oil shocks, oil supply shocks, global aggregate demand shocks, and shocks due to oil market-specific demand, on categorical economic policy uncertainty indexes from 1986 to 2023. We find that out of three oil shocks, only oil market-specific demand shocks negatively and significantly affect the US policy uncertainty over high-uncertainty regimes, with monetary policy uncertainty being the most influenced. At the same time, the impact of the other two shocks, oil supply shocks and aggregate demand shocks on EPU, is found to be fading. The oil shocks-EPU relationship exhibits regime dependencies with higher impact during the high volatile regime. Also, the role of partisan conflict in influencing the oil shocks-EPU relationship is established specifically in EPU subcategories relating to government expenditures. Hence, this paper uncovers interesting dynamics of the oil shocks-EPU relationship, such as regime dependencies, time-varying relationship, the importance of partisan conflict, and the fading influence of global oil supply shocks and oil shocks due to aggregate demand in the global economy

    How can Modern DNA Analysis and Databases Aid in Solving Open Sexual Assault Cases?

    Sexual assault cases are a continuing heinous crime that is prominent in all parts of the world. In some cases, sexual assault can go as far as murder. Luckily in the United States, sex assault murder cases are not as common as they are in other places. Some places in the world, such as the neighboring country to the United States, Mexico, have witnessed sexual assault murder cases to an intensity where it is known as femicide. In the Mexican city of Ciudad Juárez, the female population has been targeted for over three decades as victims of sexual assault murders. There are hundreds of unidentified bodies of women and girls in Ciudad Juárez that families are desperately trying to claim as their own and to find the killers. Identifying both the victims and the killers has been at the bottom of the Mexican government\u27s to-do list, which can be seen due to the lack of DNA evidence recovered and the lack of criminal investigation performed. The minuscule DNA and evidence that was collected at crime scenes and from the victims\u27 bodies are hoped to be enough to identify any of the parties involved

    Assessing the Protective Role of Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Zinc Gluconate, and Folic Acid against Cell Damage and Mortality caused by Oxidative and Heat Stress

    When cells are exposed to stress, they will either choose a protective pathway or a destructive pathway to either repair and stay alive or automatically die to avoid becoming a threat to the organism, depending on the severity of the stress. Extensive cell stress can lead to tissue damage, causing many disorders such as degenerative diseases, which is why diving into research focused on identifying supplements that can counteract these effects is beneficial for the collective health of the public. The most common type of cell stressors are oxidative stress, mainly caused by free radicals, and heat stress, caused by increased body temperatures. The aim of this thesis was to analyze the effects of different supplements on protecting mammalian cells by comparing the different effects that supplements vitamin C, vitamin D3, zinc gluconate, and folic acid can have on reducing the damaging effects of cell stress, and indicate which supplement is best for cell protection. Oxidative stress and heat stress, along with respective control trials, were performed for each of the supplements, and the tolerance to each cell stress was determined by performing cell viability assays using alamarBlue Cell Viability measurement. The recorded absorbances from the assay were used for comparing the cell viability of each concentration of every supplement with both each other and their corresponding controls. This study concluded that vitamin C was the most effective at protecting cells exposed from oxidative stress, while both vitamin C and vitamin D were the most effective at reducing heat stress mortality. Future experiments can look at different concentrations, alternative supplements, various cell types, or diverse levels and types of cellular stress to determine the full range of effectiveness of these supplement

    Disclosure of Concussion Symptoms: Perspectives of NCAA Division II Student-Athletes

    Sports have risks associated with participation, including the potential for a sports-related concussion (SRC). The timely disclosure of concussion symptoms, especially given the lack of third-party observable signs and symptoms, is essential to mitigate both the short-term and longterm health consequences of delayed or no treatment. Previous studies demonstrated that a lack of reporting appears to be the social norm, a culture of nondisclosure or delayed reporting derived from a Student-Athlete\u27s perceptions and attitudes toward SRCs. To date, Division II (DII) Student-Athletes are an understudied population and, given the disparate and lower funding and support of DII programs, and lower post-collegiate professional sport opportunities, there is a need to study the DII population. This study, therefore, aims to understand DII Student-Athletes\u27 perspectives and attitudes on disclosing concussion symptoms and identify common themes that summarize such perspectives and attitudes. This study selected eligible Student-Athletes from the University of New Haven, a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) DII university, who participated in certain sports that are considered to have a higher risk of concussion. This research utilized a pre-focus group questionnaire to collect demographic information on participants and responses to five hypothetical situations. Then, each focus group explored Student-Athletes\u27 experiences and perspectives on concussion disclosure. Responses were then analyzed using the constant comparison method to develop overarching themes. These themes consisted of the following: Lack of Connectedness, Loss of Role as a Student-Athlete, Fear of Failure, and Priority as a Student- Athlete versus Concern for Future Health. It was found that a Student-Athlete\u27s attitudes and perspectives on concussion disclosure are not necessarily one-dimensional, but may be multidimensional. As a result of the multidimensional findings of this study, interventions should be considered to aid in encouraging and facilitating disclosure behaviors to mitigate a Student- Athlete\u27s proclivity toward nondisclosure. Future studies should continue investigating Division II Student-Athlete perspectives and other levels of amateur youth athletics to gain a more comprehensive perspective on Student-Athletes\u27 perspectives and attitudes toward disclosure to facilitate further and develop applicable interventions to change attitudes and perspectives. In addition, future research could undertake a game theoretic analysis to understand the mutual independence of reporting amongst competing Student-Athletes
