    The Rise of Cyber Conflict as a Policy Tool: A Comparison of the United States and the People\u27s Republic of China

    This thesis explores cyber incident trends and its effects on conflict resolution of interstate relationships between the U.S. and China. Key findings of this research discovered that the U.S. relies on diplomatic negotiations to resolve cyber conflicts and does not utilize an aggressive approach within the cyber domain. China, on the other hand, has aggressively expanded its cyber capabilities. They leverage cyber attacks to promote their technology, military, and economy sectors, while undermining the U.S.’ global status as a political leader and innovator. China’s dominance in cyberspace poses a great threat to the national security of the U.S. Through descriptive statistics and bar graph visualizations, I discovered that the success rate of cyber attacks conducted by the U.S. and China are fairly high. The COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2022) also contributed to an increase in cyber incidents, revealing the vulnerabilities in the U.S. healthcare sector. China launched targeted attacks to exfiltrate COVID-19 vaccine research and steal money from U.S. stimulus checks awarded to U.S citizens and small businesses. Defense against cyber attacks is not enough for absolute deterrence. Cyber space creates an opportunity for U.S. enemies to pursue a low-cost option during times of peace to accomplish their national interests. It is imperative for the U.S to build a fearsome reputation in the cyber domain, as it has achieved politically and militarily. Efforts must be revitalized to negotiate a cyber espionage treaty with China, reduce tensions, and provide a gateway to peace in cyberspace

    Creation of a Nanoparticle Functionalized Adhesive for Libs-Based Detection of Gunshot Residue

    Traditionally, forensic investigations of gunshot residue (GSR) particles utilize scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for identification and analysis to determine significant facts, such as whether a firearm was discharged. New methods such as laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) have emerged that offer the potential for rapid sample analysis. LIBS can be enhanced through the use of nanoparticles. Previous studies have successfully created an adhesive tape with nanoparticles adhered to the surface of the tape. No studies have researched the use of a nanoparticle functionalized adhesive for the analysis of GSR. Therefore, this study investigated if a nanoparticle functionalized adhesive can be created using the determined optimal nanoparticle for GSR for use in nanoparticle enhanced LIBS. To address this purpose, LIBS spectra from GSR samples with and without nanoparticles were created. Salt solutions of the main GSR elements were placed on created adhesives and analyzed. After being analyzed using LIBS, the peaks on the emission spectra that correspond to the main GSR elements of lead, barium, and antimony were located and their intensities were compared between nanoparticle-enhanced and non-enhanced samples. A similar methodology was used for GSR samples collected from a gun range, where traditional adhesive stubs and created adhesives were used to collect GSR present on the hands of a shooter. Nanoparticles were applied to some stubs and all samples were analyzed using LIBS. Analysis of the resulting emission spectra was the same as above. Increased LIBS signals have been observed for the characteristic GSR elements using gold and silver nanoparticles, but the optimal has not yet been determined. In order to create a nanoparticle-functionalized adhesive, a modified version of the procedure from a previous study was followed. Various types of tape were manually peeled of and immersed in either a gold or silver salt solution for times ranging from 6 to 48 hours under different parameters to create these tapes. LIBS was used to confirm the procedure was successful in functionalizing the tape with NPs. A GSR sample was applied to the created adhesive and analyzed using LIBS. It was found that the created adhesives with both gold and silver were successful in increasing the signal intensity for wavelengths corresponding to the characteristic GSR elements by factors ranging from 1.1 to 2.7. A nanoparticle functionalized adhesive for LIBS analysis will be useful as a screening method for GSR samples. Reducing the samples run on a SEM to only those with a high probability of containing GSR particles will save labs time and money. Portable LIBS technologies are being researched, and nanoparticle functionalized adhesives could be used for rapid, on-scene analysis on GSR samples in the future

    Determining the Effect of Physical Activity Level on the Amount of Trace DNA Deposited on a Non-Porous Surface

    In the field of Forensic Science, trace DNA has been used to help identify potential offenders for a number of years. Researchers have conducted studies into how trace DNA behaves on certain surfaces such as fabric and wood. They have found that surfaces seem to have a significant influence on how much DNA is deposited and persists on the surface. However, no work has been conducted into how physical activity effects DNA deposition. The goal of this research was to evaluate the relationship between physical activity and DNA deposition. Seven individuals agreed to participate in this project by providing biological samples. They were asked to perform cardiovascular based activity in increasing intervals. Control samples as well as experimental samples were collected and extracted using magnetic bead technology. Real-time PCR quantitation was performed on the extracted samples and the resulting data was statistically analyzed using a simple linear regression model. Based on the data, a negative relationship between DNA deposition and physical activity was discovered. Thus, as activity increased, DNA present in each sample decreased. While this relationship between the two variables is present, the data does not provide enough evidence to make any concrete conclusions. Thus, further research should be conducted to find out more about the results derived through this project

    Aligning Firm Capabilities and Business Environment in a Managerial Context: Evidence from the 2016 Presidential Election and Dodd-Frank Rollback

    Studies examining firm capabilities under abrupt discontinuities are scarce. To contribute to this literature, we focus on the effect of matching firm capabilities to business environments. In doing so, we explore strategic and environmental alignment and its impact on firm performance within the banking industry before and after the 2016 presidential election. We demonstrate that firm capabilities need to match a specific environment to attain a competitive advantage. However, these same capabilities are not necessarily the source of a competitive advantage in a different environment. Specifically, we find that during the post-election era (the Dodd-Frank rollback era), the group of banks labeled rollback winners adequately aligned their capabilities to their environment, whereas the group of banks labeled rollback losers failed to do so. The winner group outperformed their counterparts because their capabilities aligned with their environment, which rewarded riskier behavior and intensive lending. However, roles were reversed during the pre-election period (the Dodd-Frank era), which demanded regulatory compliance and lending prudence. Our paper suggests that successful managers not only anticipate environmental opportunities, but that they also develop the capabilities needed to align with them. For investors, we prescribe using our matching capabilities rationale to go beyond economic and industry trends

    A Cointegrating Regression Analysis of the Impacts of Greater Economic Freedom and Perceived Risk from a Larger National Debt-to-GDP Ratio on the Real Cost of Borrowing for Corporations in the U.S.

    This study empirically investigates two main hypotheses: (1) the higher the level of economic freedom, the greater the demand for Moody’s Baa-rated corporate bonds, and, consequently, the higher the price of and the lower the real interest rate yield on those bonds; and (2) a higher national debt-to-GDP ratio level elevates perceived default risk and thereby reduces the private sector demand for Moody’s Baa-rated corporate bonds, with the results then being lower-prices on such bonds and hence a higher ex post real interest rate yield on them. Moreover, this study not only finds consistent empirical support on behalf of both of these hypotheses but also for the argument that the federal budget deficit (expressed as a percent of GDP) per se places upward pressure in financial markets on the real cost of borrowing for firms. It is noteworthy that the budget deficit variable considered in this project, effectively plays two roles insofar as raising the real interest rate yield on Moody’s Baa-rated corporate bonds. First, it plays a direct role in pressuring the yield upwards by directly competing for funds in the financial markets against households, other governmental bodies, firms, and other entities. This increased yield in turn can lead to crowding out through elevation in the interest rate. Second, a pattern of budget deficits over time adds to the magnitude of the national debt. To the extent that this growth in the national debt exceeds the GDP growth rate, the national debt-to-GDP ratio increases and can elevate perceived riskiness of default in the financial markets. Accordingly, policymakers in the public sector should make very thoughtful and circumspect efforts to reduce the size and growth of federal budget deficits. In addition, a concerted effort to raise the overall level of economic freedom would be well advised

    In Companies We Trust: Cheap Talk or Genuine Virtue?

    This paper examines how corporate narratives support either the impression management hypothesis or the incremental information hypothesis by analyzing the frequency of trust words used in the Management Discussion and Analysis (MD&A) section of 10-K filings. By directly linking trust language to actual fines and violations enforced by more than 400 federal, state, and local regulatory agencies in the U.S. from 2010 through 2023, we find that firms using more trust words in their MD&A tend to incur higher monetary penalties. We also document a significant link between increased use of trust words and poorer firm performance. Additional analyses reveal intriguing patterns: firms that use more trust words are (1) more likely to operate in sin industries such as tobacco, alcohol, and gaming, and (2) more prone to incorporate a higher frequency of buzzwords into their communication. Overall, our findings support the impression management hypothesis, emphasizing how companies may strategically use language to influence perceptions

    Economic Dynamism: Interrelationships among Entrepreneurship-Friendly Environments, Geographic Mobility, and Labor Market Freedom in both the Pre- and Post-Great Recession Periods

    This empirical research study endeavors to elevate our understanding of the interrelationship of several aspects of economic dynamism at the state level in the United States. We investigate the factors influencing geographic mobility, i.e., both net in-migration and gross in-migration patterns, by simultaneously focusing on two hypotheses using state-level panel data covering the period 2005-2017, as well as Pre-Great Recession and Post-Great Recession sub-periods thereof. These two hypotheses are as follows: the pattern of geographic mobility is positively impacted by a business climate that is (a) friendly to the pursuit of entrepreneurship per se on the one hand and (b) migrants are attracted to environments having greater labor market freedom on the other hand. This paper reveals that these two hypotheses receive simultaneous empirical support (i.e., they are not incompatible with one another)
