Effect of processing conditions on production of resistant starch type III (RS3) from breadfruit starch

    No full text
Resistant starch type III (RS3) possess various beneficial physiological effects as well as functionality in food containing resistant starch (RS). In this study, RS3 is produced from breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis) starch using different processing conditions involving disruption of starch granules, enzymatic debranching of starch polymer, starch retrogradation and drying. Then, the morphology and size of the starch granules were observed using scanning electron microscope (SEM). A sample with the highest RS content (54.59%), denoted as P8 was produced when the breadfruit starch was suspended in distilled water, gelatinised by heating at 90°C for 30 minutes, followed by starch debranching with 20 New Pullulanase Unit Novo (NPUN) enzyme per g starch at 60°C for 24 hours. The suspension was then autoclaved at 121°C for 1 hour and cold stored at 4°C for 24 hours. Further treatment of P8 sample with 0.5 M HCl acid at 60°C for 24 hours, produced HCl-breadfruit RS3 with 57.86% of RS content. It was observed that hydrolysis of breadfruit RS3 sample with HCl produced smoother starch granules with more crystalline region and proportionally increased the RS content when compared to other treated sample. This study revealed that different processing conditions were significantly influenced the percentage of yield and properties of RS type III produced from breadfruit starch

Aquilaria sp. belongs to Thymelaeaceae family. This genus produces a unique fragrant wood locally known as ‘gaharu’. It is well known for usages in aromatherapy while very few scientific evidence on its usage as herbal medicine have been published. The current study was therefore conducted to determine the chemical characteristics as well as antioxidant and α-glucosidase inhibition potential of carbohydrate-rich extracts (aqueous and polysaccharide extracts) from three Aquilaria species leaves (A. malaccensis, A. sinensis and A. subintegra). The isolation of polysaccharide (PS) from the aqueous extract (AE) was conducted by ethanol precipitation prior to ultrasonic-assisted extraction. The total phenolic content (TPC), proximate and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis were carried out to investigate the chemical characteristics, while the bioactivities determined were 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging and αglucosidase inhibition. As a result, AE of A. malaccensis leaves showed the strongest α-glucosidase (IC50: 0.038 mg/mL) and DPPH (IC50: 0.084 mg/mL) inhibition while contained more TPC (61.16 mg GAE/g) compared to other two species. Furthermore, PS of A. malaccensis leaves displayed even stronger α-glucosidase inhibition (IC50: 0.014 mg/mL) compared to its respective AE and other PS. In conclusion, this study primarily revealed the scientific evidence on the bioactive potential of PS of Aquilaria sp

Logic is the knowledge related to the methods of logical thinking in dealing with thinking errors. It sets out the systematic steps that need to be taken to reach a decision and avoid getting caught up in thinking mistakes. Scholars of the past have used the methods of Mantik knowledge to repel attacks of thought that try to confuse the beliefs and beliefs of Muslims. The Islamic faith remains strong and intact to this day, despite being threatened by various deviant thoughts of Jews, Christians, Atheists and others. Therefore, based on the rules set by Mantik scholars in the discussion of definitions, this paper tries to apply a selected contemporary issue, which is related to the use of the word Allah swt by non-Muslims. Through the method of content analysis, the study found that the truth of the use of the word Allah swt by non-Muslims will create confusion in endless thoughts and polemics. In fact, it does not coincide with the rules of Mantik knowledge that have been agreed upon by the scholars

ARTICLES OF THE MEJELLE ON SALAM CONTRACT: JURISTIC EVALUATION AND APPLICATIONS

    No full text
The Majallat al-Aḥkām al-‘Adliyyah, known as the Mejelle, is the code of Islamic civil transactions which was prepared under the auspices of the Ottoman Caliphate. This code was established based on the Ḥanafī School of Islamic law. However, people, who follow other than the Ḥanafī School, are reluctant to rely on the Mejelle even though they are interested to know the stands of their respective School of Islamic law on the articles of the Mejelle. Thus, considering the importance and relevance of Salam contract to the contemporary context, the paper attempts to conduct a juristic evaluation of the articles of the Mejelle on salam contract along with an investigation of its contemporary applications. Salam is a sale contract in which the commodity’s delivery is deferred until a defined period, while the buyer must settle the payment upon the contract’s conclusion. Although the general principle says that sale of something which is not possessed and not present is not permissible, salam contract is made valid as an exception from this, considering the need of the people. The study follows a qualitative approach and uses the content analysis method to achieve the objectives. For data source and analysis, the study consults with related classical and contemporary literature. The study finds that in general, the articles of the Mejelle on salam contract conform to the prominent Schools of Islamic law. Among the notable contemporary applications of salam contract are salam financing, parallel salam, salam ṣukūk, salam in short selling, and so forth

The availability of communication and information technology (ICT) facilities have played an important role in making the learning and programming process (PdPc) successful in the 21st century. ICT has become a great medium for facilitating information sharing and discovery, especially in the education world. However, our country concerns about teachers' readiness to accept reforms in education. In addition, the level of ICT in teachers is still low and poor internet access is hindering the use of ICT among teachers, especially teachers who teach in rural schools. Therefore, this study aims to look at the relationship of ICT usage among students in the state of Terengganu with the advent of the industrial revolution 4.0. This study is a quantitative study by descriptive review and inference. The questionnaire was used as a research instrument to collect data and a total of 102 regular daily SMK students in Terengganu were selected as the study sample. The data of this study were analysed by descriptive and inferential analysis involving percentage, frequency, mean score, “Independent Samples T-Test” and correlation. The findings of this study indicate that there is no significant difference in the level of understanding of IR 4.0 based on gender and school location factors. The study also found that there was no significant difference in the use of ICT as a medium of learning based on school location. However, there is a significant correlation between the understandings of IR 4.0 on the use of ICT in learning. Therefore, it can be concluded that students in Terengganu state ICT as a means of gaining and sharing knowledge as well as the medium of learning today. The results of this study are expected to provide important information to the Ministry of Education Malaysia (KPM) in enhancing ICT integration in the PdPc process in schools
