Demographic profiling of local governments' employees in east coast region Malaysia towards organizational citizenship behaviour

    No full text
Local government, being the manager of urban environment, is ranked last under the Malaysia government structure after Federal and State governments. The main function of local government is to stimulate economic growth and social development of a district. However, the operational roles that these local governments supposed to portray have to some extent do not meet the public expectations, resulting in various complaints being filed through various channels as compiled by Public Complaint Bureau. In response to the public outcry for better service delivery, the objective of this research is to investigate the effect of demographic factors (gender, supervisor’s gender, age, working experience, supervision tenure and service group) in influencing the exhibition of citizenship behaviour among local government workforce in east coast region of Malaysia. 126 respondents from three local governments working in states of Terengganu, Pahang and Kelantan have participated where data were collected using stratified random sampling approach. Empirical results revealed that only supervision tenure has significant influence in elevating employees’ Organizational Citizenship Behaviour, hence, supporting social exchange theory. Therefore, management should undertake hands-on actions in warranting that these demographic variables be strengthened in invoking employees’ citizenship behaviour towards instilling public confidence towards multifarious services provided by local governments

Exploring visual framing of islam: a comparative analysis

    No full text
The prevalent image of Islam in the media moved from being presented as quaint to something else. Research shows that analysis of visual elements in the media coverage of Islam is under-represented. This study explores and compares visual framing of Islam in selected Nigerian and Malaysian newspapers. Punch and Vanguard were chosen from Nigeria while The Star and New Straits Times were chosen from Malaysia based on their online readership. The study employed content analysis to analyze 425 photos and 23 videos used in the selected newspapers. Sample was collected from November 2015 until September 2016. Only photos and videos used in articles directly related to Islam were collected from the respective websites of the newspapers. It was found that significant differences exist between Nigerian and Malaysian newspapers in visual framing of Islam. Nigerian newspapers used more violent photos in reporting Islam than Malaysian newspapers. Of all the photos used in the selected newspapers, 43 reflected violence blamed on Islam while 382 were non-violent. None of the videos reflected violence. Though the use of violent photos is minimal in the newspapers, their implication might be highly influential. Visual bias could be avoided through collective effort of journalists, editors, and corporate ownership of the media

In silico docking of phage-displayed peptides targeting Plasmodium vivax apical membrane antigen 1 (PvAMA1)

    No full text
Purpose: Plasmodium is an obligate intracellular parasite that rely on the ability in host cell penetration and replication. Apical membrane antigen 1 (AMA1) is one of the most well characterized malarial surface antigen for parasite-host cell invasion and served as a pivotal vaccine candidate and potent antimalarial drug target. The present study aimed to predict the binding sites of three previously selected phage-displayed dodecapeptides, i.e., PdVI (DLTFTVNPLSKA), PdV2 (WHWSWWNPNQLT), and PdV3 (TSVSYTNNRHNL) with affinity to refolded recombinant P. vivax AMA1 (rPvAMA l). Methods: The binding sites of the PdVl , PdV2, and PdVJ peptides to the native PvAMA 1 (PDB TD: IW8K) were predicted in silico using CABs-dock web server /Lbiocomp.chem .uw.edu.pl/CABSdock). The pairs of peptide/receptor residues with 3.5 A contact cutoff were then mapped to the native amino acid residues of PvAMA l (1W8K) and rPvAMA I. Results: The simul ation models of protein-peptide docking indicated that the PdVl and PdV3 peptides were mapped to the similar regions, mainly at domains IT and III with sharing 12 similar binding sites, whereas PdV2 peptide was mapped solely Lo the DI of PvAMAl. Conclusion: Phage display technique was used to screen the phage clones that bind to the rPvAMA I. CABS-dock is a free web server for the flexible docking of peptides to target protein without prior knowledge of the binding site and also allow prediction of complex a1i-angcments close to the native structure. A greater understanding of the molecular interaction between the parasite and its host would assist in the development of new therapeutics and most importantly, a vaccine for long term sustainable reduction in the global burden of malaria

    No full text
Pattern mining refers to a subfield of data mining that uncovers interesting, unexpected, and useful patterns from transaction databases. Such patterns reflect frequent and infrequent patterns. An abundant literature has dedicated in frequent pattern mining and tremendous efficient algorithms for frequent itemset mining in the transaction database. Nonetheless, the infrequent pattern mining has emerged to be an interesting issue in discovering patterns that rarely occur in the transaction database. More researchers reckon that rare pattern occur-rences may offer valuable information in knowledge data discovery process. The R-Eclat is a novel algorithm that determines infrequent patterns in the transaction database. The multiple variants in the R-Eclat algorithm generate varied performances in infrequent mining patterns. This paper proposes IF-Postdiffset as a new variant in R-Eclat algorithm. This paper also highlights the performance of infrequent mining pattern from the transaction database among different variants of the R-Eclat algorithm regarding its execution time
