A Prelimininary Study on Validation of VisScreen Mobile Application for Vision Screening

    No full text
Purpose : Many patients had poor awareness of their ocular problems and visual status. Awareness of their visual acuity status is fundamental to one’s action for early eye care management. Due to the lack of easily understandable vision test mobile app, we developed the VisScreen for laypersons to readily screen their vision in the community. This is a preliminary report on the validation study of the VisScreen app as a tool for vision screening. Methods : Our VisScreen app is available from the Google Play store. It offers the advantages of LogMar chart by randomly presents the single letter ‘E’ in four different orientations for five times. The visual acuity level tested are 3/60, 6/60, 6/18 and 6/12, from the distance of 1.5 and 3 meters, to auto-generate the final results according to the level of visual impairment and blindness defined by WHO, easily understandable by most laypersons. Results : The validity was determined by comparing it with the Snellen chart. The preliminary results will be presented in term of its specificity, sensitivity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value. The test-retest and inter-rater reliability will also be presented. Conclusion : The validity and reliability of this app is expected to be adequate to promote it as an easy and rapid method for vision screening in the community by any laypersons. It will be useful for most patients to immediately determine their visual status for them to act fast and independently. This will greatly reduce our dependence on medical and eye care practitioners in our future prevention of blindness program at the primary care level in the community

Fat Mass Index (FMI) And Percentage of Body Fat (%BF) As Anthropometric Tools In Predicting Risk of Metabolic Syndrome Among Malay Adolescents

    No full text
Body mass index (BMI) alone cannot distinguish lean body mass (LBM) from fat mass (FM). Hence, it highlights the needs of measuring body composition as high level of adiposity is associated with metabolic syndrome (MS). This study aimed to develop two cut-off values for fat mass index (FMI) and body fat percentage (%BF) in predicting MS and to investigate the association between these indicators with MS. Subjects comprised 238 Malay adolescents (21% male, 79% female) aged 18 to 19 years old. Anthropometric comprised weight, height and waist circumference. Body composition was measured using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) techniques and blood pressure was also measured. FMI was determined by dividing subject’s FM (kg) by the square of height (m2 ). Fasting blood glucose (FBG), total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), lowdensity lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) were determined from an overnight fasting blood sample. MS was diagnosed based on IDF (2007) definition for adolescents aged 16-year-old and above. Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC) curve analysis revealed that the optimal cut-off value for FMI and %BF were 9.04 kg/m2 with AUC of [0.898 (95% CI: 0.801, 0.995)] and 30.71% with AUC of [0.875 (95% CI: 0.752, 0.997)]. Binary Logistic Regression showed that both FMI (p<0.01) and %BF (p<0.05) were significantly associated with MS. Adolescents with FMI higher than cut-off value had 31. 846 (95% CI: 3.428, 295.848) odds of having MS and those with % BF higher than cut-off value had 13.585 (95% CI: 1.486, 124.160) of having MS. In conclusion, FMI and %BF possess good discriminatory ability in predicting MS among adolescents. Significant association exists between FMI and %BF with MS. Urgent action such as intervention programme is needed to reduce the body adiposity level among Malay adolescents

A Baby-friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) has been launched since 1991. By 1998, Malaysia has been accredited as the third country of the world that fully applying BFHI in government hospital. The third step in BFHI is to discuss the importance and management of breastfeeding with all pregnant women and their families. The purpose of this study was to identify the knowledge of breastfeeding among antenatal mothers in public antenatal clinic, Malaysia prior to Prenatal Breastfeeding Talk. A cross-sectional study was used to collect data and descriptive analysis was used to figure the result. A total of 348 antenatal mothers were recruited in this study. Self-administered questionnaire was used which contain socio-demographic data, ten (10) questions on breastfeeding, the importance and confidence to breastfeed were asked. Furthermore, the feedback on effectiveness of method on giving education also been taken to identify best method in delivering education. Majority of participants (n=285, 81.9%) had scored more than half mark and being coded as good knowledge (1). In addition, majority of the participants (n=344, 98.9%) stated that they felt very confidence to breastfeed their baby. Prenatal Breastfeeding Talk provided in public clinic, Malaysia did had impact on maternal knowledge and confidence regarding breastfeeding

Monitoring feeding and resting pattern of goats in dairy farm using long-range RFID-based system

Real-time state of health of the livestock allows early diseases detection and interventions that will help avoid losses due to contagious diseases. This paper aims to describe the design and deployment of a long-range multiple-input Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) monitoring system that efficiently monitor real-time goat feeding and resting behaviour in the dairy farm by periodically collect the strength of the radio signal. The integrated system comprises of a passive RFID tag attached to the animal ear that communicates with UHF-based 4-port antenna RFID reader connected through radio frequency. The RFID reader is connected to a Raspberry-Pi3 that is used to process the received information from each tag and simultaneously transmit the data to the cloud server for analysis, visualization, and management. An interactive visualization via the website was then developed to continuously monitor the goat behaviour that helps early detection of diseases that can be detected through feeding behaviour. Results from this study show that the Received Signal Strength (RSSI) increased by 10dBm when the goat/tag closed (<1 metre) to the antenna. The result indicates that the deployed system able to successfully detect and monitor the feeding and resting behaviour of a dairy goat through the measurement of RSSI by each tag, as detected by the UHF-based 4-port antenna RFID reader

The use of current technology in the delivery of Islamic information should be highlighted, in line with the government's desire to develop the 21st-century learning implementation. In this regard, the scholarly information about al-Aqsa Mosque and Islamic Jerusalem (Baitul Maqdis) using current technology is very little. Therefore, a mobile smart phone app that provides easy and fast reference to al-Aqsa Mosque and Islamic Jerussalem (Baitul Maqdis) has been developed based on the Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation (ADDIE) Model. This app is called Faham Fiqh al-Aqsa. This article aims to introduce to the masses about a mobile learning medium developed as a simple and straightforward reference to the al-Aqsa Mosque and Islamic Jerussalem (Baitul Maqdis). The al-Aqsa Mosque and Islamic Jerussalem (Baitul Maqdis) were chosen as the subject of this study because of its important position in Islam and have its own sentimental value to Muslims. The Faham Fiqh al-Aqsa 's interface display contains the key topics that every Muslim needs to know about the Masjid al-Aqsa and Baitul Maqdis, available in 3 languages; Malay, Arabic and English. The content of the apps consists of written information about al-Aqsa Mosque and Islamic Jerussalem (Baitul Maqdis), pictures, and videos of expert discussion, with Malay subtitle to ease the users to understand the content of the videos. Additionally, it also features video with sign language translation for hearing impaired. FAQ also provides jigsaw puzzle games to foster the love of Al Aqsa Mosque and Islamic Jerussalem (Baitul Maqdis) among children. This app can be downloaded from Google Play and Gallery of Malaysian Government Mobile Application (GAMMA). Based on user-friendly features and feedback from users in the play store show that FAQs can be a reference medium and mobile learning that is informative and suitable for 21st-century learning
