    No full text
News of high-profile frauds and financial malpractices continue to make daily media headlines after the change of government in May 2018. Whether in the private or government sector, corruptions, financial misconduct and malpractices have always been associated with lack of proper auditing and ineffective internal control systems. Various initiatives have been developed to reduce the negative perception of public sector frauds including the implementation of whistleblowing practices in public sector. However, to date, it is still questionable whether this practice is efficient and effective due to the increasing trend in reported frauds in the government departments. Thus, this study examines the practice of whistleblowing in Malaysian public sector agencies. Total of 500 questionnaires are distributed to the internal auditors in public sector agencies. To achieve the objective of this study, the application of artificial intelligence in the practice of the whistleblowing will be examined to see the effectiveness of this practice. The findings are expected to enhance the new Malaysian government initiatives in fighting frauds and corruptions. The effect of whistleblowing practice will provide further evidence to strengthen the internal control system and practices and improve the public sector accountability and transparenc

The most famous method when dealing with decision making is Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM). One of the easiest techniques from MCDM is Fuzzy Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (FTOPSIS). However, there are some circumstances in FTOPSIS still needs to be enhanced. Therefore, this paper concentrates on: (1) to develop FTOPSIS with Z-number and α-cut based MCDM problem; the combination of Z-Number and α-cut is seen suitable to solve uncertainty issue due to the additional restriction and reliability parts; (2) to validate the propose method using numerical example. The study presents six steps of FTOPSIS with Z-numbers and α-cut to verify the position of the numerical example; (3) to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed method using ten different number of α-cut. Ten different numbers are 0.1 to 0.9. From the study, this proposed method opens a new revolution in MCDM area to provide different ways when dealing with decision making problems. Thus, give us variety of techniques in decision making area

Maslahah: A Legal Basis for Making Khalwat An Offence In Malaysia

    No full text
Penalizing khalwat (close proximity) under the state’s Shari’ah laws has been regarded as a scandalous issue in Malaysia notwithstanding the fact that the majority of jurists from the major schools of thought have agreed on the prohibition of khalwat and that Islamic laws are recognized in the Malaysian legal system. The objection on penalizing khalwat is based on the debate of weighing the maslahah between an-nahy an al-munkar and to conceal the aib (shame) of others and their privacy. This paper highlights that it is important to understand that the first degree of maslahah takes priority over the subsequent ones and that preventing khalwat takes priority over the fear of committing tajassus or breaching one’s privacy. Research methodologies adopted in this paper are doctrinal and statutory analysi

    No full text
Background/Aims: Energy dense, high saturated fat, low fibre diets may contribute to obesity in breast cancer survivors, how-ever their relationships with high molecular weight (HMW) adi-ponectin are unclear. We examined associations between an 'en-ergy-dense, high saturated fat and low-fibre' dietary pattern (DP) and HMW adiponectin in breast cancer survivors. Methods: Data was obtained from 96 participants in the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia Breast Cancer Survivors Study. Dietary intake, anthropo-metric and 1-IMW adiponectin were measured and z-scores for an 'energy dense, high saturated fat and low fibre' DP were estimated using reduced rank regression (RRR). Associations between DP z-scores and IIMW adiponectin were examined using regression models. Results: The results of this study show that, a 1 unit in-crease in DP z-score was associated with a 0.41 Rg/mL lower HMW adiponectin (95% CI: —0.806, —0.014) independently of age, BMI, cancer stage, duration since diagnosis, education level and occupa-tion status. The 'energy dense, high saturated fat and low fibre' DP which was characterized by high intake of sugar sweetened bever-ages and fat-based spread while lower intake of fruits and vegeta-bles were further examined to find which food groups contributed significantly to the association. Interestingly no significant find-ings were found supporting that totality of the diet provides more accurate description of actual dietary exposure. Conclusion: As a conclusion, 'energy dense, high saturated fat, low fibre' DP is neg-atively associated with HMiA, adiponectin. This finding could serve as a basis in examining the relationship between dietary ex-posure, obesity and cancer survivorship

Influence of the english language in shaping islamic identity among religious secondary school students

    No full text
Identity refers to how people understand their relationship to the world, how that relationship is constructed across time and space, and how people understand their possibilities for the future. This research examined some claims made that learners of the English language as a second language have associated themselves with the culture and practices of the native speakers thus eroding the identity of the learners as good Moslems. This research aimed at investigating this phenomenon, to what extent the changes existed, if any. The main topics to discuss were the influence of the English language towards religious secondary school students’ identity and to what extent the students could retain their identity as Moslems. There was one theory employed in this research called Self-Identity Theory. 90 religious secondary students and 8 teachers were used as respondents by conducting focused group interviews and face to face interviews with them. They came from urban, sub-urban, elite and rural schools respectively. The findings revealed that there were mixed responses from the respondents on the issues. 85 students, making up 94.5 % of the whole respondents, asserted that the English language did not change the students’ Islamic identity. Meanwhile only 5 students, comprising 5.6% of the respondents, were of the opinion that the students had been influenced by the culture of native speakers of the English language thus eroding their identity as good Moslems. In a positive note, it was also found that there were some good values instilled in the teaching of the English language such as confidence, helping each other, teamwork, etc

Background Increasing evidence reported that inflammation and oxidative stress is a key mediator of osteoarthritis (OA) joint pathology, therefore usage of dietary supplements targeting inflammation and oxidative stress in OA could be a rewarding therapeutic strategy. This study aims to explore the efficacy of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory dietary supplements used to manage OA. Methods A methodological framework proposed by Arksey and O'Malley was used to conduct this staging review. An electronic database search of English academic articles was conducted using PubMed, MEDLINE and ScienceDirect from 2000 to 2018. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of OA with parallel groups by comparing dietary supplements with placebo were eligible for inclusion. Out of 69150 study identified, a total of 41 studies were included. Result A total of 24 antioxidant or anti-inflammatory dietary supplements were identified. There were 3325 (1740 in the treatment group and 1585 in the placebo group) respondents which aged a 25 years old in which 2284 were female and 996 were male respectively. The majority of the studies recruited participants with knee OA (n = 33) with follow-up duration of 3-32 weeks Overall, most of the dietary supplements demonstrated beneficial effect on clinical signs and symptoms. In contrast, Aquamin supplementation did not exert positive impacts on OA management. Also. inconsistent findings were observed in green-lipped mussel (GLM) extract. vitamin E, methylsulfonylmethane (MSM). liquorice flavonoid od (LEO). ginger. willow bark extract and rose hip supplementation. Discussion The bioactive compounds found in dietary supplements that demonstrated positive impacts are predominantly polyphenols Polyphenols are found abundantly in plants and vegetables with strong anti-inflammatory and free radical scavenging antioxidant activity. In summary, since there is no cure for OA currently. the role of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant dietary supplements cannot be ignored since they can provide pain and symptoms alleviation
