Is Seeing Believing? How Television Advertisements Influence Investment Decisions
Stock returns are influenced by many factors. Finance scholars have attempted to examine the potential causes of stock price changes by comparing the observed returns of stocks after an event with the predicted returns they should have experienced had the event not occurred. The current “Super Bowl-Stock Returns” studies tend to find conflicting results regarding whether the returns of Super Bowl advertisers’ stocks deviate from their predicted values during the trading days following the Super Bowl, as well as the direction in which these returns deviate and why they deviate. This study uses a more precise model for estimating predicted stock prices than those used in previous studies to find that the returns of Super Bowl advertisers\u27 stocks tend to not deviate from the predicted returns they would have experienced should the Super Bowl advertising not have happened. This study finds that the variance in abnormal returns is not correlated with measures of behavioral biases previously explored
Applications of Janus Dendrimersomes in Nucleic Acid Delivery
The discovery of new drugs often accompanies the need for improved drug delivery vehicles that tackle common problems associated with drug solubility, stability, and biodistribution. Janus dendrimers (JDs), characterized by their branched amphipathic structure, self-assemble into vesicles known as dendrimersomes, which have potential to address these challenges. Notably, Janus dendrimersomes are biocompatible, exhibit mechanical stability, and can encapsulate both hydrophobic and hydrophilic therapeutic cargo. This work seeks to expand the versatility of Janus dendrimersomes in drug delivery in two ways, namely by developing a cell-targeted delivery system using nucleic acid aptamers and by exploring encapsulation and delivery of nucleic acid therapeutics, specifically small interfering RNA (siRNA). First, using azido-modified JDs, we show that DNA-conjugated dendrimers (JD-DNAs) can be synthesized in a one-step reaction with alkyne-modified DNA using copper catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition. These JD-DNAs assemble into dendrimersomes via thin film hydration and can be delivered to cells in a targeted manner via aptamers, or nucleic acid binding species, that bind to the human transferrin receptor. Second, we investigate the ability of ionizable amphiphilic JDs (IAJDs) to form dendrimersome nanoparticles (DNPs) and encapsulate RNA cargo. Specifically, we explore how assembly method, buffer conditions, and presence of polyadenylated (polyA) mRNA affect DNP size and polydispersity index. We also begin to develop a platform for using these DNPs in small interfering RNA (siRNA) delivery, first by creating a cell line that transiently expresses enhanced green fluorescent protein (eGFP). Knockdown of eGFP expression using DNPs encapsulating anti-eGFP siRNA will later serve as a proof-of-concept approach to screen DNPs in siRNA delivery. Taken together, this work showcases new approaches for utilizing JDs in drug delivery applications
Connection to Places: Exploring Impacts of Development and Individual Characteristics
Research revolving around Sense of Place or connections to Place is a uniquely chaotic area of study. It is understood that these connections to places have many concrete outcomes like environmental stewardship or relative comfort in a location. However, little is known about what individual characteristics predict strong connections to places. In this study, Object Attachment (via the OASM), sentimentality (Kama Muta Frequency Scale), Belongingness (via SOBI), Animistic Thinking and Development (IDEA) are posited to have connections to sense of place, measured using the Five Dimensions of Place Attachment. The analysis primarily consisted of regression models, which supported previous research along the lines of rural, urban, and suburban connections. The predictive models also found evidence of sentimentality, animism, and belongingness playing a role in connection to place on a variety of dimensions. My findings also indicate that development plays a key role in how people connect to places, and what types of places. The implications of these findings have many applications, both in the real world and theoretical landscape
Refugees and the EU: A Study of the Preferential Treatment of Ukrainian Refugees
The war in Ukraine created one of the largest refugee crises in the world today, and the European Union has played a significant role in accepting these individuals into various Member States. The protection of Ukrainian refugees, or any refugee for the record, is important. However, the European Union has been more accepting and welcoming to Ukrainian refugees compared to refugees coming from other places, indicating potential biases of European Union policies and the othering of non-Ukrainian refugees. To study this, this paper will utilize a comparative case study of Ukrainian and Syrian refugees. The paper will compare these two cases because they are the two largest refugee crises in the world today, and the magnitude of both conflicts provides a strong foundation to be able to compare the actions of the European Union
