    Are Students Actually Learning What You Think They Are? An Exploration Into the Educational Outcomes of Course Based Undergraduate Research Labs

    It is important to understand whether students are acquiring intended educational objectives. A course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE) lab seeks to blend the logistical ease and accessibility of college courses with the educational benefits of research experiences. By employing inquiry-based teaching methods, CURE labs enable students to collaborate in a group setting under the guidance of a faculty member, engaging in hands-on research. This project studies how educational outcomes of CURE labs can be measured. CURE labs may improve anything from technical lab skills, to scientific literacy, to persistence in science. These short-, middle-, and long-term goals may be measured to improve understanding of how these outcomes may best be obtained. While numerous studies demonstrate ways to measure short-term outcomes like content knowledge or technical skills, there are notable gaps in the literature concerning the assessment of more complex outcomes, such as students\u27 capacity to navigate uncertainty or to truly assimilate into scientific culture

    Investigating Protein Interactions Between PAM-1, CDC-25.1, and the Novel lz6 Suppressor During Oocyte Maturation in C. elegans

    Caenorhabditis elegans are transparent nematodes often used as model organisms. PAM-1 is a highly conserved puromycin sensitive aminopeptidase that regulates oocyte maturation and polarity establishment. Mutations in the pam-1 gene cause infertility, defects in polarity establishment, and abnormal progressions of meiosis and mitosis. CDC-25.1 dephosphorylates the maturating promoting factor in C. elegans oocytes, allowing oocytes to mature and become fertilized. I investigated protein interactions between PAM-1 and CDC-25.1 by observing oocyte maturation in the C. elegans gonad to uncover the mechanism behind PAM-1’s role in reproduction. Suppression of PAM-1 phenotypes have also been observed, of which a novel suppressor was found called lz6. The novel suppressor lz6 is hypothesized to be the causal mutation in the cdc-25.1 gene that suppressed PAM-1 phenotypes. Delayed oocyte maturation in pam-1(or403);lz6 mutants was found compared to pam-1(or403) via DIC and confocal microscopy, which supports the conclusion that lz6 is a loss of function mutation in cdc-25.1. Furthermore, knockdown of cdc-25.1 with RNAi revealed delayed oocyte maturation in wildtype worms but not pam-1(or403) or pam-1(or403);lz6 mutants. This suggests PAM-1 is downstream of CDC-25.1 in the oocyte maturation pathway

    Visibility in the Redacted Space: What Censored Poetry Reveals About Guantanamo Bay Prison and the Individuals Trapped Inside

    This paper discusses what readers can understand about Guantanamo Bay and the larger setting of America\u27s Islamophobic War on Terror through the poetry of individuals detained inside of Guantanamo Bay Military Prison. In 2002, Mark Falkoff, with the help of a team of lawyers, translators, and human rights advocates published a collection of twenty-two detainee-authored poems, titled Poems from Guantanamo: The Detainees Speak. This paper discusses the emerging neo-colonial subjectivity of America\u27s War on Terror, as it analyzes the available writings of Guantanamo poets. The new language of subjectivity of victims of contemporary American empire is defined by suppression, as it was extensively vetted, translated, and censored, but the language is also defined by the undeniable suffering of detainees, given the available content of the poems as well as further journalistic and academic information written on Guantanamo Bay Military Prison and the larger landscape of the War on Terror

    Bioactive Glass Bead Characterization: Further Applications in Passive Drug Delivery

    Bioactive glass beads were discovered for their bone repair properties in 1969. This properties, along with their bactericidalness, high ability to be engineered, bioactiveness and their versatile structures, mark them as excellent candidates for explorations in other biomedical applications in addition to bone repair. One alternative application includes passive drug delivery, especially when the biomaterial is in a porous, microsphere structure. In this work, we first explore various samples of bioactive glass compositions and structures in order to target the best bead for the application of drug delivery. The targeted beads are then thoroughly characterized using optical microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Raman Spectroscopy, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and White Light Interferometry. Next, our work focuses on the development of a novel absorbance measuring process and analysis in order to track passive diffusion of dye loaded beads in solution. This serves as a platform for correlating passive drug diffusion rates with material properties and performance as a route to functional applications

    Capital Punishment: Analyzing the Demise of the Death Penalty\u27s Usefulness

    As there are evident flaws within the practice of capital punishment, I urge the United States federal government to question ways in which they should change how the death penalty is implemented into law. I propose that lawmakers consider fully abolishing the death penalty as a means of eliminating ethical and economic concerns within our judicial system. However, if this option does not seem possible, I instead propose the federal government act in revising the current practices used within the capital trial process. Previous research has found that the continued use of the death penalty can cause risk of economic loss, inhumane punishment, and racial discrimination within the sentencing process. In addition, data analysis has also highlighted the ineffectiveness of the death penalty in terms of its inability to deter crime and its potential to place innocent lives at risk
