Nature Healing, One Hundred Years On
No full textWalking alone across the damaged roof of a fort involved in the Battle of Verdun in World War I, learning about the effects of the war first-hand. In the distant background, the French flag still waves high above the fort. While nature has all but reclaimed the battlefields, the bumps in the grass represent scars of craters left by artillery over one hundred years ago.

Beyond Birth: Nurturing Careers, Elevating Women in Southern Europe
Get PDFThe expansion of female labor force participation has a strong, positive effect on economic growth. Maternity leave policies aim to support women’s employment continuity through a reduction of labor tradeoffs. Variation in maternity leave policies between countries spotlights the effect of maternity leave on female labor force participation, as shown in a comparison of countries in Southern Europe. This thesis provides an empirical analysis of maternity leave policy and female labor force participation rates in Spain, Italy, Portugal, and Greece. After the empirical study, the thesis analyzes changes in gender equality policies and women’s labor force participation in Spain, beginning in the early twentieth century and continuing to the present day. This case study allows for closer examination of the effect of expanded maternity leave on female labor force participation rate over time. The empirical analysis highlights the statistically significant impact of the length of maternity leave and wage replacement rate on female labor force participation rate. Findings from this research suggest that policy makers should work to expand maternity leave policy to support a strong female labor force. Moreover, the research supports the future adoption of more extensive international mandates to encourage countries to extend their policies, as highlighted in the Spanish case study
Jargon to Jackpot: The Financial Impact of Infusing Pop Culture References in Social Media
Get PDFThis research explores the impact of incorporating pop culture references in a company\u27s Twitter feed on the company\u27s stock price. Pop culture is integral to people\u27s everyday lives, providing a sense of familiarity and fun between individuals. Many companies have started leveraging pop culture references on social media platforms like Twitter to establish a relatable and engaging connection with diverse consumer demographics. The primary purpose of this research is to investigate whether this strategy is beneficial within the stock market. It is hypothesized that incorporating pop culture references on Twitter can lead to increased sales and higher stock prices, as investors see the potential for long-term growth and continuously exceeding market expectations with consumers familiar with the pop culture references used. Through qualitative analysis of four companies’ Twitter feeds, pop culture references were detected daily and compared to each company\u27s abnormal returns to answer the question. This research finds that pop culture references in Twitter feeds affect a company’s stock return, specifically when it uses slang in its tweets. These results underscore the importance of considering social media engagement, including incorporating pop culture references within market strategies, as it can lead to brand awareness and loyalty, shaping investor perceptions and stock market outcomes
Étant Donnés: Checkmate, Rrose Sélavy
No full textMarcel Duchamp’s final work of art, Étant Donnés: La chute d’eau, 2. Le gaz d’eclairage (Given: 1. The Waterfall, 2. The Illuminating Gas), installed at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, was debuted after his death in 1968. The work was revealed to have been produced in secrecy between 1946-1966 and installed according to the artist’s detailed instructions. As viewers approach, they are confronted with an antique wooden door save for two peep holes, through which they find a motionless naked figure supporting a gas lamp, foregrounding an animated waterfall. The female form presenting a phallic object, the gas lamp, and the allusion to male orgasm as a running of water, have been discussed in literature; however, I argue that the body behind the door belongs to the artist’s well known female alter ego, Rrose Sélavy, as a self-portrait. Not only is this a final self-portrait of Duchamp and Sélavy as composite identity, but this is also the final breath of Sélavy, the permanent exhibition of her murder. This project investigates the iconographic connections between the design of Étant Donnés and the Black Dahlia Murder (Los Angeles, 1947) through analysis of Duchamp’s intention for Sélavy, the photographic work of Man Ray, the Freudian act of voyeurism
