Economic Effects of the Separation of Serbia and Montenegro
Get PDFThe desire of sovereignty is deeply rooted in the history of the Balkans. From the battle of Kosovo in 1389 to the Bosnian War in the 90s there have been numerous instances of redrawing lines on a map and reclaiming land. This paper revisits one of the most recent separations, the one between Serbia and Montenegro in 2006, and explores implications the split had on each economy. More specifically, using a Bayesian Structural Time Series Model, we constructed a counterfactual series to investigate how Serbia and Montenegro would have developed economically had they remained a unified state after 2006. Using data from the World Bank World Development Indicators from 1997-2023 we found that the real GDP per capita of Serbia and Montenegro was not significantly different than their projected counterfactual had they remained a unified state

Ambiguity: Hope & Hopelessness
No full textAmbiguity: Hope & Hopelessness is an anthology of poetry that includes poems about a wide variety of topics and emotions. As a young queer woman, I wrote poems about coming to terms with my sexuality, the experiences of women, and what growing up means. The anthology is broken down into three sections: “Love”, “Loss”, and “Loathe”. Each of these sections pulls apart what each of these words mean and how they relate to growing up. The section “Love” often has poems that reflect what romantic, platonic, and parental love looks like, while the section “Loss” deals with what the loss of these loves looks like. “Loathe”, however, deals with the bigotry and hypocrisy that women and queer people face. The poems depict both the anger itself and the injustice of the experience
Moral and Epistemic Considerations of Political Engagement: A Step Toward Responsible Voting
No full textThe average American does not have the tools necessary for virtuously engaging with politics. This is the direct result of an ongoing epistemic crisis that impacts the way we seek information and acquire the evidence that shapes our political beliefs. In an environment in which fake news, post-truth, and an overwhelming mistrust of ideological opponents runs rampant, credible evidentiary support for these beliefs may not motivate voting behaviors as much as they should. Common diagnoses of this phenomenon tend to focus on the systemic and structural barriers that negatively impact group-level prosperity. However, this view fails to consider what virtuous political engagement at the individual level looks like while such an environment persists. Ultimately, this project seeks to not only craft a nuanced diagnosis of the condition of American political epistemology, but it also aims to establish a rational and feasible prescription as well. Political beliefs, behaviors, and voting practices directly impact everyone in the United States. As such, we all have a moral and epistemic responsibility to act thoughtfully. This project will determine what these moral and epistemic responsibilities are and what they entail

No full textThese are a selection of photos taken out of the train window from the 2-hour journey between LA and Ventura, California. The series ends up showing the changes and similarities in landscape and culture between stops - going from a city area to suburbia to agricultural areas to the ocean, but having graffiti, palm trees, washes, desert, and warm tan tones be consistent. I took around 400 photos on this trip, not paying attention to framing or lighting, just looking out the window and capturing whatever caught my eye.
