Analyzing the Sentiment of Feminist and Non-Feminist Works

    No full text
This presentation focuses on a group of texts that advocate for a change in the current belief system. These texts are the Feminist Manifesto, Sojourner Truth: Ain’t I a Woman?, and Civilization and Its Discontents. These first two texts advocate for women’s rights, while Freud’s book is focused on civilization’s decline and how our understanding of community can affect this. Through our presentation, we want to examine the differences in sentiment and language between the feminist texts and Freud’s texts to pinpoint whether or not sentiment changes when advocating for different beliefs

Sounds Good, Feels Good: Subjective and Physiological Measures of Music Perception

    No full text
The benefits of listening to music are vast and well documented in the music cognition literature. Of these benefits, music\u27s ability to induce and regulate emotions is of particular interest to scientists investigating the mechanisms underlying emotion processing. Psychological constructionists have suggested that specific brain regions are specialized for specific emotional processes. From this perspective, the lateral orbitofrontal cortex (LOFC), and the medial orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) have been implicated in evaluating environmental sensory information and internal emotions states respectively. This study uses music to induce emotion, investigating two main questions: 1) If the LOFC and OFC participate in evaluating emotion conveyed by music and 2) How various musical elements influence the perception of emotion in music. Here, emotion is defined as the momentary sensation of valance and arousal evoked in response to a stimulus, or core affect. Functional Near-Infrared (fNIR) imaging was used to measure changes in oxygenation in the LOFC and OFC while participants listened to 12 short musical excerpts. While listening, changes in pupil dilation were measured as an indicator of autonomic arousal. Participants used Russell’s 1980 Circumplex Model of Affect and the 5-point Self-Assessment Manikin to judge the emotional content of each excerpt. Advancing our understanding of these mechanisms benefits both healthy individuals, as well as those living with disorders impairing emotion perception and regulation. Furthermore, advancing our understanding of how music can be used to influence these processes has implications to refine how we interact with music recreationally and in clinical practices

    Out! Just Over the Line

    No full text
Out! Just Over the Line is an introspective and witty memoir written by former high school tennis player Rach Wascoe, exploring her tumultuous journey climbing the achievement ladder only for everything to be flipped upside down. Through her struggles with grief, trauma, and conflicting narratives spurred on by coaches, she was simultaneously at the height of her tennis career while at the lowest point in her life. As a wide-eyed freshman eager to gain the attention of her coaches, she was met with persistent indifference. Through her renewed dedication, which grew to an obsession, Wascoe began to manifest the success she was craving, oblivious to the shaky foundation it was built on. Having reached the coveted first singles spot, new challenges pushed her mental health over the line and everything began to collapse. Left exploring her self-worth without tennis, Wascoe’s storytelling highlights the unpredictability of high school sports, the importance of finding a supportive community, and serves as a powerful reminder that nobody can force you to smile
