The Influence of Institutional Barriers and Personality on Gendered Occupational Choice
Men hold a disproportionate share of high-paying jobs, leading to an uneven distribution within the workforce. Possible rationalizations behind the formation of the occupational gap can be narrowed down to two factors: institutional barriers and personality differences. Accounts of prestigious organizations intentionally underrepresenting women in academic spheres, in addition to the persistence of societal norms can explain the observed distribution. Other perspectives insist that sex determines one’s behavior in selecting a life-long occupation, where a woman’s instinct to nurture and develop interpersonal connections leads them to choose fields that necessitate these characteristics. Compiling data from mainstream companies like Apple who seek to reduce the gap, we have determined that the implementation of gender quotas and DEI training can result in positive strides towards the elimination of the gap
Childhood Recollection
This book stack was created by a first-year student at Ursinus College participating in a Common Intellectual Experience event. After a group Stacks on Stacks activity in Fall 2024, students were invited to submit their own individual creations in Spring 2025.https://digitalcommons.ursinus.edu/cie_stacks/1038/thumbnail.jp
Single Cryotherapy Treatment in Mice After Muscle Injury
The purpose of our study was to investigate how cryotherapy treatment changes the inflammatory process following muscle injury. Male and female mice were injected with either 20ul of either 0.9% NaCl (control) or 1.2% BaCl2 (injury). Immediately following injection, mice were either given no treatment, or a 20 minute treatment with ice under anesthesia. We found that the temperature between the muscle and the ice packs was lowest (-2.80C°) around 4 minutes into cryotherapy treatment and highest at the end of treatment (7.40C°). At 48 hours following injection, the tibialis anterior and blood was removed from the mouse and snapped frozen. Next semester we will use these samples to determine if cryotherapy changes inflammatory protein levels in males and females. We will also compare any observed changes in inflammatory protein profiles to those from a different experiment where mice underwent three cryotherapy treatments

The Blurry Line: Examining the Balance Between Feminism and Nationalism for Women in Early 20th Century Ireland
The early 20th century in Ireland was a complex and confusing period. Between British Imperialism, The Gaelic Revival, World War I, the suffrage movement, and the Irish War of Independence, the period was fast and turbulent. Above the shifting ground, Irish women activists balanced two key political causes: feminism and Irish nationalism. Past scholarship has examined the coexistence of these two ideals. At times, one suppressed the other. At other times, they worked in tandem. This project offers a new interpretation of Irish women\u27s political activity through a close reading of the letters and memoirs of three people: Constance Markievicz and Margaret Skinnider of Cumann na mBan, and Linda Kearns who served as an Irish nurse and courier. The published sources from each of these women demonstrate that the internal identities of feminism and nationalism were harder to balance or compartmentalize than historians give credit. These activists demonstrate that they were consistently interacting and being challenged by their femininity when fighting for nationalism. Each of the three female political activists will be primarily examined through primary documents created by them, be they memoirs, letters, or publications. Ultimately, this project sheds light on the complex decision-making and prioritization that are part and parcel of political movements
Bone Marrow Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells as a Treatment Option for Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus
Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is a chronic autoimmune condition in which the body’s immune system attacks and destroys insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. This leads to chronic hyperglycemia and requires lifelong insulin therapy to regulate blood glucose levels. While current treatments such as insulin injections can help manage the disease, they come with significant drawbacks. These include the inability of insulin therapy to fully replicate the dynamic glucose regulation provided by natural beta cells. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have emerged as a promising alternative due to their immunomodulatory properties, ease of isolation, and potential to differentiate into various cell types, including pancreatic beta cells. This study aims to develop a protocol for growing stem cells harvested from C57BL/6 mice and to verify viability using an LDH cytotoxic assay

Pacific Surfliner Train 765 Los Angeles to Ventura (One-Way): 9:16 AM
These are a selection of photos taken out of the train window from the 2-hour journey between LA and Ventura, California. The series ends up showing the changes and similarities in landscape and culture between stops - going from a city area to suburbia to agricultural areas to the ocean, but having graffiti, palm trees, washes, desert, and warm tan tones be consistent. I took around 400 photos on this trip, not paying attention to framing or lighting, just looking out the window and capturing whatever caught my eye.
