Amylose and amylopectin in selected Malaysian foods and its relationship to glycemic index

    No full text
The aim of this study was to determine the nutrient contents and to evaluate the relationship between amylose and amylopectin content to glycemic index of diet commonly eaten by Malaysian. The food samples consisted of nasi lemak, fried rice, fried rice noodle, fried macaroni, sandwich sardine, doughnut, curry puff and roti canai with dhal. Each sample was prepared based on standard recipe (except doughnut, roti canai with dhal and curry puff were bought from 3 different locations) in two different cycles. Moisture, ash, crude protein and crude fat were analyzed using proximate analysis whereas amount of carbohydrate was calculated “by difference”. Total dietary fiber was analyzed using AOAC 991.43. The content of amylose and amylopectin were analyzed using colorimetric method and calculated “by difference”, respectively. Our results showed that doughnut contained the highest carbohydrate (49.49 ± 1.24 g/100 g) while nasi lemak had the lowest carbohydrate (25.04 ± 0.56 g/100 g). Roti canai with dhal had the highest total dietary fiber content (3.89 ± 0.43 g/100 g). The highest amylose content was found in roti canai with dhal (11.75 ± 1.38%) while highest amylopectin content was in nasi lemak (94.19 ± 0.48%). The amylose content of tested samples ranged from 5 to 12%. In conclusion, results showed that there was no significant relationship between the ratio of amylose to amylopectin and glycemic index but negative trend existed which indicated increase in amylose content will lower the glycemic index of a food

Planning for regional sustainability in uncertain times: urbanisation through the waves of global crises

    No full text
Planning for sustainability in uncertain times, especially due to global crises, often proceeds tentative, requiring the placing aside of grander comprehensive plans for a more achievable short term gains. While boom periods characterised by the influx of large capital seems to be constantly increasing rapidly, and bust periods show uncontrolled decline in general,a more detailed look will show more fluctuations and uncertainties; with decisions to expand a business or fold taking longer and that there are more decisions involved than what may seem at the surface. This paper presents the findings of a study on urbanisation in the Bernam Linggi region, an area that spans the states of Perak, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan in Malaysia. It is fast becoming an urban conurbation with different centres currently fusing together to create a contiguous development area. The paper presents how these changes impact upon and are impacted by the infrastructure and the community, resulting in changing livability and sustainability potential. The paper argues that planning such a region requires an analysis that does not assume stability and employs a complexity approach to understand the planning needs for the development of the Bernam-Linggi region to capture the intricate processes of regional growth

Fonologi rangkap vokal dan kepelbagaian dialek Melayu: analisis teori optimaliti

    No full text

Empathy as speech manipulation target in pre-election discourse of great britain.

    No full text
Nowadays much attention in linguistics is paid to the study of manipulative kinds of texts which function within the political discourse. This paper deals with the linguistic means that the British political leaders use to actualize empathy and compassion. Despite the basic statements of Darwin’s theory these manipulation targets are considered to be the important mechanisms of tribal human behavior by many ethologists. The pre-election speeches of the British political leaders taken as linguistic data are regarded in the article with the help of intentional analysis and the analysis of stylistic means and vocabulary which are used by the producers. These methods let us understand how the producers of manipulative messages which consist of manipulative speech acts apply to the recipients’ empathy and compassion. The results of such analysis show that the most frequently used linguistic means of realization of this manipulative strategy are nominating lexemes, associative lexemes and some stylistic means (anaphora, simile and some others). These results also let us conclude that using of ethological data in linguistics helps the researchers understand the mechanisms of linguistic manipulation in the British political discourse

Judging behaviour and rater errors: an application of the many-facet rasch model.

    No full text
Of the potential sources of construct irrelevant variance or unwanted variability in performance assessment, those associated with raters have been found to be extensive, difficult to control, and impossible to eliminate. And as rater-related errors are non-trivial and threaten the validity of test results, it is necessary that these errors are accounted for and controlled in some way. This paper explains the different types of rater errors and illustrates how they can be identified using the Many-facet Rasch Model, as implemented by FACETS. It also demonstrates what these errors mean in terms of actual judging or rating behaviour and elucidates how they may affect the accuracy of estimation of performance. Rater errors that are explicated in this paper are those related to rater severity, restriction of range, central tendency, and internal consistency. As assessment and its procedures are central to student learning, matters related to valid and fair testing need to be taken seriously. It is hoped that with greater awareness of how we judge and a better understanding of how rater-related errors are introduced into the assessment process, we can be better raters and better teachers

MHD stagnation-point flow towards a stretching sheet with prescribed surface heat flux

    No full text
The steady two-dimensional stagnation point flow of an incompressible viscous and electrically conducting fluid, subject to a transverse uniform magnetic field, towards a stretching sheet is investigated. The governing system of partial differential equations are transformed to ordinary differential equations, which are then solved numerically using a finite difference scheme known as the Keller-box method. The effects of the governing parameters on the flow field and heat transfer characteristics are obtained and discussed. It is found that the heat transfer rate at the surface increases with the magnetic parameter when the free stream velocity exceeds the stretching velocity, i.e. ε>1, and the opposite is observed when ε<1
