The language of modern news and the timelessness: reforming journalism in the non-occidental world (Bahasa berita moden dan keabadian: reformasi kewartawanan di dunia bukan oksidental)
The ethos of news, commentary and journalism as an institution needs to be transformed in embracing the dimensions of timelessness and the transcendent. This article suggests that the current practice of not recognizing the incompatibility between the language of religion, as represented by Islam and the language of the media, and as represented by the institution of journalism need to be reviewed. It focuses on the product, not the whole profession. The news and the modern institution and profession of journalism are not a universal phenomena. It is unique to the Occidental world. It argues that the language of news and the language of religion are two separate, incompatible paradigms, hence suggesting overcoming that incompatibility. This article argues for a rethinking and a reevaluation on the reportage of Islam and religion in the non-Occidental world

Relationship between demographic factors and learning styles of management undergraduates
The main objectives of this study are to identify learning style preferences and the relationship between demographic factors and learning styles among management undergraduates. The eight learning styles, that is, active, reflective, sensing, intuitive, visual, verbal, sequential, and global, as identified by Felder and Silverman (2002) were assessed to identify the learning style preferences of management undergraduates. Demographic variables, such as gender, ethnicity, entry qualification, field of study, type of institution and year of study, were tested to assess the relationships between these demographic factors and learning styles. The Index Learning Style (ILS) developed by Felder and Soloman (1991) was adapted and used as the survey instrument. Findings revealed that the dominant learning style preferences, in sequential order, are visual, sequential, reflective, sensing, global, active, intuitive, and verbal. Gender, ethnicity, entry qualifications, field of study, type of institution, and year of study were related to the learning styles of management undergraduates
Effect of aluminium hydroxide loading on the compression stress and modulus, thermal conductivity and acoustic properties of palm-based polyurethane hybrid composite
The effect of adding aluminum hydroxide (ATH) in the palm-based polyurethane hybrid composite was studied. The compression stress and modulus, thermal conductivity and acoustic property were determined. The hybrid composite was prepared by adding 10 wt% of oil palm empty fruit bunch fibre (EFB) followed by ATH at varying amount of 2, 4 and 6 wt% of the overall mass of the resin. The compression stress and modulus gave the highest values of 575 kPa and 2301 kPa, respectively at 2 wt% ATH. At 4 wt% ATH, the compression stress and modulus decreased to 431 kPa and 1659 kPa, respectively and further decreased at 6 wt% ATH to 339 kPa and 1468 kPa respectively. The k-value increased with the increment of the ATH loading exhibited a poor thermal conductivity. Sound absorption analysis indicated that the absorption coefficient was higher at higher frequency (4000 Hz) for all samples with PU-EFB/ATH with 4% ATH showed the highest absorption coefficient
Empowering patient’s relatives: How to do it right using the media
Introduction : Relatives play an important role in patient care - not only providing social support but also help to complement the existing care. They must be empowered with relevant knowledge and skills of patient care including motivating patient towards immediate healing and acceptance of his fate. Although these are various approaches, the media is regarded as the most effective method in educating the family or the relatives. This paper highlights the significant role of the media as an educational tool to mobilize patient’s relatives in total patient care.
Methodology : This is a review conducted on reports, observations and feedbacks gathered from various sources involved in patient education in hospital setting. It was endorsed by a series of in-depth expert forum under patient education module.
Results : Relative empowerment has been identified to be as an important role and yet it is not fully utilized. The manpower resources are so scarce and crucial in patient as well as relative education. The media is the only alternative educational tool that could compliment the educational needs. Of all potential media available in the market we have recognized at least four types of media that can be optimally resourced and used. Through manipulation of its content and making it interactive, the role of media seemed to be extremely effective in patient management that include relatives.
Conclusion : The role of media in relative’s education in support of patient care is undeniable. The media with the most potential should be identified and the management of its content to be enhanced. It must be incorporated with an interactive approach in order to have more self-involvement and undersatanding of its content
Is the high cu tolerance of trichoderma atroviride isolated from the cu-polluted sediment due to adaptation?: an in vitro toxicological study
The tolerance of Cu by Trichoderma atroviride, a tolerant fungus isolated from the drainage surface sediment of the Serdang Industrial Area was investigated under in vitro conditions. Only this fungus species can tolerate up to 600 mg/L of Cu on solid medium Potato Dextrose Agar based on the isolation of the most tolerant fungus from the polluted sediment. Toxicity test performed on T. atroviride, showed a maximum tolerance at 300 mg/L of Cu concentration when grown in liquid medium Potato Dextrose Broth (PDB). The EC50 value of the isolate was 287.73 mg/L of Cu concentration in PDB. The Cu concentration in the drainage surface sediment, where the T. atroviride was isolated from, was 347.64 μg/g while the geochemical distributions of the non-resistant and resistant fractions of Cu were 99.6 and 0.4%, respectively. The sediment data indicated that the drainage had greatly received anthropogenic Cu from the nearby industries which are involved in the manufacturing of plastics and electronic products. The present findings indicate that the high Cu tolerance showed by T. atroviride could be due to the well adaptation of the fungus to the Cu polluted sediment. Therefore, T. atroviride could be a potential bioremediator of Cu pollution in the freshwater ecosystem
Association between dialysis dose and biochemical blood parameters
The end stage renal disease (ESRD) patients requires hemodialysis to survive. Efficacy of the treatment is determined by evaluation of minimal dialysis dose (Kt/V) which is 1.2. A cross sectional study was conducted among patients that undergo hemodialysis in a dialysis centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The objectives of the study were to determine the association between dialysis dose and demographic factors and assessed the association between biochemical blood parameter and the demographic factors. The biochemical blood parameters were serum albumin, creatinine, cholesterol and hemoglobin. Result showed that all Indians and 54% of Chinese patients achieved the required dialysis dose. However only 29% of Malay patients attained the effective dialysis dose. More women patients accomplished the dialysis dose of at least 1.2 compared to men patients with odd ratio of 11.24. All the biochemical blood parameters were independent of the demographic factors. However, the cholesterol level was associated significantly with gender (p<0.05). In conclusion, the study found the biochemical blood parameter and dialysis dose were not influenced by the demographic factors
Comparative studies on plasticized and unplasticized polyacrylonitrile (PAN) polymer electrolytes containing lithium and sodium salts
Polymer electrolytes based on polyacrylonitrile (PAN) containing inorganic salts; lithium triflate (LiCF3SO3) and sodium triflate (NaCF3SO3) and ethylene carbonate (EC) as plasticizer were prepared using solvent casting technique. In this study, five systems of plasticized and unplasticized polymer electrolyte films i.e. PAN-EC, PAN-LiCF3SO3, PAN-NaCF3SO3 PAN-EC-LiCF3SO3 and PAN-EC-NaCF3SO3 systems have been prepared. The structural and morphological properties of the films were studied using infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) while the conductivity study was done by using impedance spectroscopy. The infrared results revealed that interaction had taken place between the nitrogen atoms of PAN and Li+ and Na+ ions from the salts. SEM micrographs showed that the plasticized film, PAN-EC-NaCF3SO3 has bigger pores than PAN-EC-LiCF3SO3 film resulting in the film containing NaCF3SO3 salt being more conductive. On addition of salts and plasticizer, the conductivity of pure PAN increases to three orders of magnitude. The plasticized film containing NaCF3SO3 salt has a higher conductivity compared to that containing LiCF3SO3 salt. This result showed that the interaction between Li+-ion and the nitrogen atom of PAN was stronger than that of Na+-ion. The conductivity-temperature dependence of the highest conducting film from each system follows Arrhenius equation in the temperature range of 303 to 353 K. The conductivity-pressure study in the range of 0.01 - 0.09 MPa showed that the conductivity decreased when pressure was increased. This can be explained in term of free volume model
Towards the conservation of Sungai Santi catchment: monitoring of land use and vegetation density of mangrove areas
This paper presents analyses of the land use and land cover change of the Sungai Santi catchment area. The purposes of this study were to delineate mangrove and other land use and land cover and to detect and develop land use masp in catchment aresa over the past 17 years. The NDVI method has been applied to observe the vegetation density of mangrove areas. Landsat TM and SPOT 5 imageries with a combination of ERDAS Imagine 8.4 and Arc View/Arc GIS software were used to detect spatial and temporal changes in land use and vegetation density between the years 1991 and 2007. Sungai Santi catchment experienced multiple changes of land use of varying degrees in 1991 and 2007. Results showed that agricultural land of oil palm and mixed agriculture, water bodies, and forest increased in this area, compared to mangroves and urban areas which decreased by 15.8 % (350 ha) and 23.4 % (223.3 ha) respectively. A land use change matrix indicated that the reduction of mangrove areas was due to an increase in water bodies and forest areas. NDVI method indicated six vegetation density values and the most dominant value was (0.4 – 0.5) which recorded 989.9 ha in 1991 and 981 ha in 2007. Even though the NDVI change matrix depicted a significant transition of 144.1 ha display from (0.4 - 0.5) to (0.5 - 0.6) in 2007, there low vegetation density occurred near the main river. The results showed that on-going land use change and deforestation of mangrove areas can be controlled through strict management of land conversion, and as for the mangrove forest, it has to be through total protection by law. This goal can be achieved by improving the Permanent Forest Reserve law and commitment to adopting a sustainable resource polic
