Gender and employee involvement in Malaysia

    No full text
This paper examines the differences between the attitudes of men and women towards Employee Involvement (EI) programs in Malaysian context. Quality Circes (QC)and Employee Share Ownership Schemes (ESOS) were the focus of the current study of EI. Both quantitative research approaches were used in amixed method study. The research found no significant differences in the attitudes of men and women toward EI schemes. However, with regard to participating in EI programs men appeared to have more opportunity in comparison to women. This suggests that managers should seriously consider gender variations in designing EI schemes at the workplace

A meaningful hybrid e-traning measure and model for technology in education

    No full text
A close examination of new hybrid e-training programmes, for determining programme quality, exposed a critical disparity between rapid technological advancements and established pedagogical models. The objective of this study was, therefore, to develop, generate, test, and validate a two-stage model for a meaningful hybrid e-training programme. An early framework of the model helped develop a questionnaire to measure the meaningfulness of a hybrid e-training programme. Confirmatory factor analysis was performed using AMOS 7.0 on data collected from 213 trainees to obtain three best-fit measurement models from three latent variables. Overall reliability analyses, using Cronbach’s Alpha and the Rasch Model, in addition to content validation by experts, suggested that the questionnaire was reliable and valid for measuring a meaningful hybrid e-training programme. Subsequently, structural equation modelling was applied to test the hypotheses. The results showed a strong positive relationship between hybrid e-training and meaningful e-training, a weak positive relationship between learning style preference and hybrid e-training, and a negative relationship between learning style preference and meaningful learning. In brief, the study proved that hybrid e-training contributed significantly towards achieving meaningful learning. Consequently, future training, with respect to the use of hybrid e-training, should include all the five components of meaningful hybrid e-training instead of focusing on the content alone. With the results showing a weak positive relationship between learning style and hybrid e-training, and a negative relationship between learning style and meaningful e-training, instructional media designers and developers should now focus on integrating all the five components of e-training to ensure meaningful learning. It would be interesting to further investigate whether or not learning style is a mediating or a moderating factor in achieving meaningful learning through the use of hybrid e-training programmes, as was modelled in the final results

Voices from the Bolivian Altiplano: perspectives on empowerment among Aymara women

    No full text
This paper examines the perspectives on empowerment among Aymara women against the concept of empowerment as it evolves in the context of international development. Through the analysis of findings from a series of field observations it was found that Aymara women had a threefold perspectives of empowerment: (1) Empowerment as participation where women could find a voice and take collective action; (2) Empowerment as leadership where women were enabled to take the reins of local change; and (3) Empowerment through conflict where women could open up space and shift roles in adverse situations. The paper concludes by reiterating the need for studies of empowerment to embed the local within the national and global. By identifying the interconnectivity between Aymara women in El Alto and La Paz, national politics, and international scholarship, the paper calls for a framework that captures how institutions, politics, and society construct empowerment

Characterization of Ge Nanostructures embedded inside porous silicon for photonics application

In this work we prepared germanium nanostructures by means of filling the material inside porous silicon (PS) using conventional and cost effective technique, thermal evaporator. The PS acts as patterned substrate. It was prepared by anodization of silicon wafer in ethanoic hydrofluoric acid (HF). A Ge layer was then deposited onto the PS by thermal evaporation. This was followed by deposition of Si layer by thermal evaporation and anneal at 650οC for 30 min. The process was completed by Ni metal deposition using thermal evaporator followed by metal annealing of 400οC for 10 min to form metal semiconductor metal (MSM) photodetector. Structural analysis of the samples was performed using energy dispersive x-ray analysis (EDX), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy (RS). EDX spectrum suggests the presence of Ge inside the pores structure. Raman spectrum showed that good crystalline structure of Ge can be produced inside silicon pores with a phase with the diamond structure by (111), (220) and (400) reflections. Finally current-voltage (I-V) measurement of the MSM photodetector was carried out and showed lower dark currents compared to that of Si control device. Interestingly the device showed enhanced current gain compared to Si device which can be associated with the presence of Ge nanostructures in the porous silico

Testing and calibration of an ultraviolet-a radiation sensor based on GaN photodiode

    No full text
An ultraviolet A (UVA) radiation intensity sensor with responsivity in the wavelength range of 320-360 nm was developed based on a gallium nitride (GaN) photodiode. In this sensor system, a GaN photodiode in reverse-biased mode converts the radiation intensity into current, which was then converted and amplified into an output voltage by a transimpedance amplifier (TIA), or current-voltage converter, consisting of an operational amplifier and a feedback resistor. For a narrowband UV source, the radiation intensity could be calculated from the values of the output voltage, feedback resistor, photodiode responsivity and photodiode effective area. The sensor was tested by performing measurements over different values of UV source wavelength, source distance, ambient temperature and sampling time. For calibration with a broadband UV source, the GaN-UVA sensor was used simultaneously with a standard Si-UVA sensor to measure solar radiation. The observed linear relationship between the sensors’ outputs enables us to convert the output voltage of the GaN-UVA sensor to UVA intensity. Thus, we have successfully developed, tested and calibrated an ultraviolet A radiation sensor based on the GaN photodiode

Finite difference calculation of electron states in CdTe-CdS core-shell quantum dots

    No full text
We determined theoretically the confined electron states in a colloidal core-shell CdTe-CdS quantum dot system with CdTe as the core material with electron effective mass 0.095 me, CdS as barrier material of electron effective mass 0.25 me and having conduction band offset of 0.265 eV. Based on the one band effective mass approximation, the Schrödinger equation of this system with BenDaniel-Duke Hamiltonian is numerically solved using the finite difference method to obtain the energy level and wave function of the electron confined states. These electronic parameters are obtained by diagonalising the resultant N×N Hamiltonian matrix for principal quantum number n=l – 3, orbital quantum number l=0 – 3 and dot size r=10 – 100 Å. For comparison, we also analytically solve the Schrödinger equation with classical Hamiltonian and similar input parameters to determine the electronic properties. There is good agreement in the results of these two computational methods, where specifically their energy levels differ by less than 15%

A ZnO gas sensor was successfully prepared by RF sputtering. The maximum sensitivity of the sensor for vinegar test application was at 400oC. The ZnO based sensor showed good sensitivity for vinegar test in the concentration range of 4% to 9%. The work reveals the ability of using ZnO gas sensor to determine the acid concentrations of the vinegars for food requirements

Improvement on the innovational outlier detection procedure in a bilinear model

    No full text
This paper considers the problem of outlier detection in bilinear time series data with special focus on BL(1,0,1,1) and BL(1,1,1,1) models. In the previous study, the formulations of effect of innovational outlier on the observations and residuals from the process had been developed and the corresponding least squares estimator of outlier effect had been derived. Consequently, an outlier detection procedure employing bootstrap-based procedure to estimate the variance of the estimator had been proposed. In this paper, we proposed to use the mean absolute deviance and trimmed mean formula to estimate the variance to improve the performances of the procedure. Via simulation, we showed that the procedure based on the trimmed mean formula has successfully improved the performance of the procedure
