Order-4 symmetrized runge-kutta methods for stiff problems (Kaedah Runge-Kutta Tersimetri Peringkat-4 untuk Masalah Kaku)

    No full text
If a Runge-Kutta method having an asymptotic error expansion in the stepsize h is symmetric then it is characterised by an h2-expansion. Since elimination of the leading error terms in succession results in an increase in the order by two at a time, a symmetric method could therefore be suitable for the construction of extrapolation methods. However, when order reduction occurs for stiff problems it needs to be suppressed before an appropriate extrapolation formula can be applied. This can be achieved by a process called symmetrization which is a composition of the symmetric method with an L-stable method known as a symmetrizer. The symmetrizer is constructed so as to preserve the h2-asymptotic error expansion. In this paper we consider symmetrization of the 2-stage Gauss and the 3-stage Lobatto IIIA methods of order 4. We show that these methods are more efficient when used with symmetrization. Extrapolation based on the symmetrized methods is therefore expected to give greater accuracy. We also show that the method with a higher stage order is more advantageous than one with a lower stage order for solving stiff problems

Two cases of pseudohyperkalemia that occurred after emergency splenectomy, what goes up, will come down

    No full text
Pseudohyperkalemia is a spuriously high serum potassium measurement in a patient with no clinical evidence of hyperkalemia. It has been reported to occur in patients with leukocytosis and thrombocytosis. Only a few cases of pseudohyperkalemia have been reported in patients after splenectomy. Two cases of pseudohyperkalemia occurring after emergency splenectomy for abdominal trauma are presented to highlight their clinical presentation and sequalae. Consecutive patients who underwent emergency splenectomy for trauma and subsequently developed pseudohyperkalemia were monitored in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre for their clinical sequalae. Both the patients developed leukocytosis, thrombocytosis and high serum potassium level within 2-weeks of their splenectomies. They did not demonstrate any symptoms and signs of hyperkalemia. Their conditions resolved spontaneously without any specific treatment. Pseudohyperkalemia should be suspected in a similar clinical scenario to avoid unnecessary treatment that could lead to severe hypokalemia

Ideopolis di wilayah Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur: ke arah memperkasakan daya saing hub pendidikan di peringkat global (Ideopolis in the City-region of Kuala Lumpur: empowering an educational hub for global competitiveness)

    No full text
The paradigm shift toward the k-economy in this era of globalization requires various stakeholders - industrialists, governance, universities - to be competitive, proactive and innovative in creating new ventures. To meet these demands, the formation of an ideopolis as a development strategy has become a central concern in developing countries. Various studies have shown that for an educational city-hub to function effectively as an ideopolis nine key components or drivers will need to emerge, namely, physical investment; building on existing assets; diverse specialization; high skill organisation; a vibrant education sector; a distinctive knowledge niche; connectivity leveraging; strong visionary leadership; and community investment. For Malaysia the question if it is meeting all the nine requirements of an ideopolis is relevant, crucial and needs to be answered. Based on an empirical case study of the Kuala Lumpur city-region, this paper seeks to gauge the extent to which the city-region has been able to meet some of those prerequisites. It concludes that the Kuala Lumpur city-region is an emergant ideopolis that sets to enhance the country’s regional and global competitiveness

An evaluation of the final year dental students' geriatric oral health community programme.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the teaching-learning process involved in the geriatric oral health community programme for final year dentistry students which was introduced by the Faculty of Dentistry, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. The geriatric oral health community programme formed part of the curriculum for final year students and involved the division of the students into small groups. The groups were facilitated by their instructors to prepare an activity which was to be conducted at various community geriatric institutions. These group activities required the students to apply the oral health planning and promotion concepts they had been taught prior to the activity. At the end of an eight-week long preparation period, the students implemented a day-long programme at the institution. The effectiveness of the teaching-learning process involved in the programme was evaluated using a self-administered questionnaire measuring three segments: fulfilment of programme objectives, assessment of facilitators and programme processes and overall satisfaction regarding the conducted programme. Data was collected two weeks after the completion of each student group’s visit. Fifty of the total fifty-two participating students (96.2%) responded. Of these, forty-nine students (98%) were either ‘somewhat satisfied’ or ‘satisfied’ with the programme conducted. The majority of the students agreed that the programme had managed to achieve the following objectives: (1) sensitized them towards harbouring a caring attitude towards the elderly, (2) enabled them to better their interaction with the elderly, and (3) made them realize the importance of teamwork in executing a community project. Despite the certain administrative weaknesses encountered in conducting the program, the students agreed with the relevance and importance of the inclusion of community geriatric dental education in their curriculum
