Pembandaran dan kehidupan bandar di Semenanjung Malaysia

    No full text

Object categorisation using Malay Shape-based numeral classifiers.

    No full text
Categorisation is fundamental in human cognition and language development. Crosslinguistic studies on categorisation propose numeral classifiers as a linguistic manifestation of human categorisation and conceptualisation. Thus, studies on numeral classifier acquisition enable researchers to examine how children learn to categorise objects in their environment using a constrained framework, and how this ability becomes more refined as children grow older. This study investigated the strategies children utilise in categorising objects into eight Malay shape-based numeral classifier categories using a paired discrimination task. One-hundred-and-forty-eight children ranging in age from 6 to 9 years and a comparison group of adults participated in this study. Results revealed that children categorised objects more readily when there was a strong (two-perceptual feature distinction) than weak (one-perceptual feature distinction) contrast, and when exemplars were typical rather than atypical. There appears to be a gradual transition from a perceptually biased to a broader, more rule-based system

    No full text
This paper reports a study on the perceptions of learning via online games among Arabic elementary language learners at the Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS), International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). The survey was a part of a front-end analysis for the design and development of an online Arabic vocabulary games prototype. It elicited learners’ attitude towards Arabic language learning, their attitude towards playing ordinary video games and perceptions of utilizing online games in Arabic language learning. The descriptive quantitative and open-ended survey was distributed among 113 out of 133 learners, taking Arabic language course in an academic semester. The results showed positive level of pre-acceptance among learners’ support and value-addedness of online games were also pronounced in the suggestions put forward by the participants.Based on the findings, the initial design principles were established to guide the development of the online game prototype. The paper further explains how the front end analysis aided the design and development of the online games prototype and ascertained it as a viable application in learning Arabic

Workplace writing in English: insights from Malaysian bank managers.

    No full text
This paper discusses the findings of a series of interviews with three local commercial bank managers, describing workplace writing among Malaysian bank executives as writers of English as a second language (ESL). Existing studies on workplace writing are found to be limited in number, particularly those that investigate writing among bank executives. In addition, the status of English as a second language (L2) poses an inherent linguistic challenge for Malaysians and, thus, results in a different set of writing needs than for native writers of English. These factors illustrate the need for an in-depth investigation of the Malaysian banking institutions context. This study is part of a larger research, and data from this study was collected through semi-structured interviews, involving three managers as experienced informants. Their feedback was divided into four categories: the language of correspondence, the writing responsibilities at each bank, the roles of computers and writing software to assist in writing tasks, and the future of writing software programs in Malaysia. The findings can be summarized as follows: 1) English was the correspondence language in two out of the three banks; 2) writing was a frequent responsibility among most of the executives; 3) the executives were generally not provided any assistance with regard to writing; and, 4) a writing software program tailored for ESL writers was deemed a necessary form of assistance in consideration of the multiple tasks that need to be performed by the bank executives
