    To what extent does contributing factors seen in Covid -19 patient make them more susceptible to contracting sepsis

    SARS-CoV-2, also known as Covid-19, was the cause of a global pandemic around the beginning of January 2020, with about 32,412 new cases every two weeks as of January 23, 2023, not considering the amount of covid-19 instances that go unreported. Symptoms that have been associated with Covid-19 include fever, chills, extreme cough, fatigue, the new loss of taste and smell, and more. Sepsis, on the other hand, is potentially a life-threatening condition that occurs, as the body\u27s response to an infection which can lead to tissue damage, organ failure, and death. This study aims to analyze the incidence of sepsis among covid patients of different ages, ethnicities, and BMI, including other complications that arrived from these patients contracting Covid, such as Hypertension, ARDS, Renal Failure, and more. This study will be through a retrospective review to more appropriately determine whether the covid patients contract sepsis based on the individual\u27s specific risk rates among these factors. The record of covid patients was obtained through research articles and data related to the researcher\u27s topic. These data points were sorted using stratifications that the researcher saw as a common factor in the following research articles. A chi-squared analysis was conducted to show a significant association between covid patients and sepsis. The outcome of this study is that covid-19 patient populations of males, patients 60-70, patients that are obese, and those with hypertension and ARDS will have a significantly heightened risk of contracting sepsis than other covid-19 patients. These results can potentially improve the prognosis of sepsis in covid patients based on physical features and other pre-consisting conditions that have formed because these patients have contracted covid

    How can community input be utilized to improve walkability in Columbia, South Carolina neighborhoods?

    The Harden Street corridor in Columbia, South Carolina bordering the Five Points neighborhood is the most dangerous street for pedestrians and cyclists in South Carolina. This is due to the lack of walkable infrastructure within the neighborhood and the city itself. This study takes a survey from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration relating to different aspects of walkability including cleanliness, safety, and overall aesthetics. Research shows that when communities have input into urban regeneration projects, they tend to be more successful. The expected data from this survey will show that community members desire more space for walking and less space for cars. I also expect the data to show that bicycle lanes and other safety infrastructures such as crosswalks and streetlights to be implemented. The data from this survey will then be used to create hand drawn redesigns of the city which aim to allow more space for pedestrians and cyclists by rerouting major traffic around the neighborhood instead of through it. The overall aim of this project is to create a more pedestrian friendly neighborhood that reduces pedestrian related accidents, increases walkability, and increases activity within the neighborhood

    Finding and Testing a Practical Use of NISQ Era Quantum Computing

    A quantum bit\u27s ability to be in a superposition of 0 and 1 solves many problems that were otherwise impractical or impossible with classical computers. However, current quantum hardware is limited at scale and cannot perform many of these breakthrough quantum algorithms. Smaller scale quantum algorithms are often used as an alternative but lack real use. One practical use of current state quantum hardware is machine learning which uses self-learning models to derive information from datasets and predict outcomes. As a continuation of practical quantum computing, my research group implemented a variational quantum classifier to predict heart attacks. Data was preprocessed classically to determine which parameters had the highest correlation to our target variable of whether the patient had a heart attack. These parameters were then normalized for the quantum space with a feature mapping process. The newly normalized data was fed through a variational circuit of random parameters. These parameters were then updated through an optimization process of 30 iterations for each data input. This fine tuning of the parameters yielded a quantum model that was able to predict heart failure. Our algorithm implementation was constrained to a quantum simulation on a classical computer. This eradicated the theoretical quantum speedup that would be present from running on real quantum hardware. Fortunately, our implementation can run on existing quantum machines and provides a practical use of quantum computing

    The Effect of Streptomyces griseus at Different Temperatures on the Growth of Brassica rapa in Saline-Sodic Soil

    Climate change and saline-sodic soils are current issues in the world. They negatively affect the growth of plants, resulting in issues for living things such as animals that eat plants and need them to survive. The purpose of this experiment was to compare the plant growth of Brassica rapa at different temperatures while being affected by another stress factor, saline-sodic soil. In this experiment, there was a constant concentration of 5% saline in soil but the temperature was 20℃, 30℃, or 40℃. It was hypothesized that in an environment of 40℃ and 5% salt concentration, Brassica rapa growth would grow more rapidly than in an environment of 20℃ because Brassica rapa are grown optimally at 30℃, which is in the summer, and therefore will be used to the fluctuation of 30℃ to 40℃. A hydroponics system was made to grow the plants in this experiment. Each group was then put in soil with 5% salt and a gram-positive bacteria, Streptomyces griseus to remediate the soil. Then each group was put in either 20℃, 30℃, and 40℃ for a week. The results showed that the average heights were 3.807 cm for 20℃, 6.140 cm for 30℃, and 5.617 cm for 40℃. Then, Data were statistically analyzed with a one-way ANOVA test at an alpha value of 0.05. The data was statistically significant, since p-value was \u3c0.001 Therefore, it can be concluded that multifactorial stress factors that include temperature change and saline-sodic soil significantly impacts plant growth

    The Effect of Propolis Concentrations on The Repellency of Culex quinquefasciatus

    Propolis, otherwise known as bee glue, is a resinous substance that is collected by bees from different types of plants. It is used for producing many pharmaceuticals like cosmetics and ointments. However, little research exists on the potential for propolis to be used as an insecticide or insect repellent. The purpose of this study was to determine whether propolis could be used as an insect repellent against Culex quinquefasciatus, and whether different concentrations would affect its repellency. It was hypothesized that the greater concentration of propolis would result in the highest repellency against Culex quinquefasciatus, since studies testing the effects of propolis on other organisms tended to show that higher concentrations of propolis extracts resulted in high levels of narcotic effects and death of the organism. Approximately 30 mosquitoes were put into 4 separate containers for the experiment. One side of the tube contained a piece of filter paper treated with either 0%, 5%, 10%, or 15% propolis solutions, while the other side contained an untreated piece of filter paper. Every two minutes for one hour, the number of mosquitoes on each half of the container was counted and recorded. The results of a Chi-square test of independence with an α-value of 0.05 found that the difference between the data for each trial was significant, as p (\u3c0.001) \u3c α-value (0.05). Therefore, there is sufficient evidence to suggest that the greater concentrations of propolis resulted in greater repellency against Culex quinquefasciatus

    The Effect of Hyaluronic Acid Exposure on the Filtration Efficiency of Nasturtium officinale

    Hyaluronic acid has become increasingly popular over recent years due to its presence on social media platforms. Additionally, hyaluronic acid is naturally found in the joints of animals and is used as a lubricant. Nasturtium officinale is a naturally occurring vegetable and is also considered a superfood due to its vitamin-rich leaves and filtering properties. The purpose of this experiment was to test the relationship between N. officinale’s ability to filter in different environments. The specific environment used was the addition of hyaluronic acid. It was hypothesized that the addition of hyaluronic acid would negatively affect the filtration efficiency of N. officinale due to the fact that there is more for the plant to filter. For the methods, water was added to containers and hyaluronic acid was added. A 16-in-1 water quality test kit was used to test the different factors of the water such as total hardness and pH. After the water quality test, a single N. officinale leaf was added to the water sample and left, and a water sample was taken again. The difference was calculated and the average difference was used for the chi-square test. Each category received its own chi-square test. The hypothesis partially supported, thus the exposure to hyaluronic acid does impact the filtration efficiency of N. officinale
