    Exploring if Thermoset Bamboo Composite Wind Turbine Blades are More Reliable/Durable than Modern Day Wind Turbine Blades

    With wind turbine blade waste increasing at a rapid rate around the world, renewable and biodegradable materials have never been more important. The field of wind energy has a promising future, however, the increase in inoperative and defunctionalized non-recyclable wind turbine blades are affecting the aspect of a renewable source. Implementing a biodegradable alternative may be a viable option for modern-day wind turbine blades not only because it is biodegradable, but also because of the factor that the laminated epoxy bamboo material is durable and reliable. The ideal wind turbine blade has not yet been created and tested in a high-pressure setting, in order to obtain a comprehensive idea of how strong the material could be. The purpose of this paper was to construct a durable, biodegradable wind turbine blade out of a material that could withstand any type of environmental disruption, as well as easily become recycled after a period of time. It was hypothesized that the blade material could support immense pressure at different attack angles, simulating the rotation of an actual wind turbine blade. The final design of the bamboo-epoxy wind turbine blade was able to withstand a maximum of 1,342 psi. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and the mean value for each attack angle value was considered as a crucial value. Therefore it was found that the proposed alternative of epoxy-laminated bamboo wind turbine blades is a viable alternative, but more research should be held before implementation in the real environment

    The Relationship between Age-related Speech Disfluencies and Life Satisfaction in Mothers with FMR1 Premutation

    Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) is a genetic disorder that is caused by a gene mutation in the CGG repeat DNA segment within the Fragile X Messenger Ribonucleoprotein 1 (FMR1) gene. There are three main variations of FXS: intermediate, premutation (FXpm), and full mutation. People with FXpm, have shown an increased amount of speech disfluencies. Previous studies have shown that people with FXpm are more prone to developing speech-related disorders, compared to typical-developing people. While FXS affects mostly males, it still affects females, just with higher variable severity. This experiment was conducted to investigate the relationship between speech disfluencies and life satisfaction in mothers with FMR1 Premutation. A major finding revealed in this experiment was that mothers with the FXpm did show a lower average life satisfaction score, compared to typical-developing mothers. In addition, there was a high association between repetitions and lower life satisfaction scores in typical-developing mothers. These results revealed that higher speech disfluencies, especially repetitions, can lead to lower life satisfaction. Furthermore, mothers with FXpm may show lower life satisfaction than typical-developing mothers

    Investigating Factors That Could Associate With Length of Stay of Patients With Acute Subdural Hematomas​

    Over 2.8 million people in the United States suffer from a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), a brain dysfunction caused by an outside force. Patients with this condition can have longer Lengths of Stay (LOS) and hospital bills ranging up to $400,000. Factors associated with LOS in TBI patients are currently unknown, and we aim to identify them. We hypothesized that certain patient-specific factors predict LOS. To test this, the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) provided us with a 212-patient TBI Database from January 2023 to July 2023. To make the database smaller, we decided to filter it to only people with Acute Subdural Hematomas (aSDH), a pool of blood between the brain and its outermost covering. The new total was 49 patients. We chose to focus on factors like age, gender, mechanism of injury, and discharge location. We also used MRIcroGL, a software that can trace lesions from Computed Tomography (CT) scans, on three patients. It makes a 3D model where you can measure the volume of an aSDH in voxels. We noticed that males, patients who went to rehab, younger patients, and people with a larger aSDH had a longer LOS. All of the factors examined ended up having no statistical significance. In the future, we aim to increase the number of patients for more generalizability, find an automatic hematoma lesion tracer, and examine more factors like socioeconomic status. This research could lower patient costs in the hospital if associations are found with longer LOS
