I remember bright yellow light
shining in through the glass
back door of my childhood home.
It’s the middle of June and
my birthday—I don’t remember
which one—is right around the corner.
Mom is in the kitchen.
Is	she	preparing	lunch?	
An	early	dinner?	Baking	a	cake?
I am rounding the center island,
asking her a question.
Asking about the gift that sits in the living room 
wrapped in polka-dotted, pastel yellow paper.
There	are	flowers	on	the	counter
As there always are this time of year.
Bright pink tulips, my mom’s favorite.
Their	floral	scent	drifting	through	the	kitchen.
The oldest memory in my head swirls
in contrast with the summers that follow.
The latest of which sees three years
of college over and done, and
summer a welcomed break. 
This year my birthday is gold.
My dog had puppies a month earlier,
and the house is drowning in golden fur.
It’s the middle of June and
I have just returned home for the
first	time	in	a	year.
Mom	is	the	first	to	greet	me.
How	much	has	changed?
How much of the past
would	continue	to	linger?
I	get	swarmed	by	fluffy	cuteness	
the moment I reach the top of the stairs.
Each golden puppy with a colorful collar.
And there is a selection of 
bright pink tulips—my favorite—
awaiting me on the counter.
As there always are this time of year.

Fleeting Memories

The Echo a 56
A twisted Seussian ritual,
festive	firs	from	family	and	friends	
turn	fire	and	brimstone	pastor’s	preaching	
to reality on Friday night.
Orion eyes the grisly scene.
Mid-January, mid to high 30s,
the wrath of Satan stings the cheeks
and settles feet above the head, 
a single twig rides the wave of smoke
‘till it falls back into blazing jaws. 
Pine needles twist in on themselves 
like dying spiders, evergreen to rotten wheat, 
a	skeleton	drawn	out	from	melted	flesh	
as crackling embers play their sweet cacophony. 
The body is burnt, the air is frigid, 
sap	fills	the	cracked	lines	in	dried	palms,
another victim is prepared.
And suddenly night turns to day 
and the sun is seated back on the pyre. 
Ashes rain down on my auburn hair, 
death’s confetti looking for a place to rest.
